Fly Fishing Tails is a first of its kind in
South Africa. A truly digital only magazine
with a free distribution to all who want
it. It is not a website, but rather a digital
representation of a print magazine, with
the added features and associated benefits
that the digital platform brings.
WELCOME
So as usual mother nature is up to the usual…a
bit of warmer weather to get us all dropping
our guard and then BAM, cold snap. Only
difference is that this year she delivered her
usual bitchy bout with a sprinkling of the white
stuff.
I remember seeing a Leon Schuster movie years ago called
“Oh, Shucks here comes UNTAG”. In the film, one of the
characters from overseas asks a local SA boer “when does it
snows in this place?” To which the prompt reply was “When
Transvaal win the curry cup!” Well I can tell you that at the
time of Johannesburg’s first snow in some 31 years, the Lions
(Transvaal) are in fact the reigning curry cup champions.
Maybe Leon knows more than we do with his Nostradamuslike
prediction all those years ago, but I can tell you
something I know now…summer IS here. Albeit with a bit
of a bite in the air, and yes probably a bitch, I mean cold slap
to come, but as far as I’m concerned it is here. Well that’s my
story an I’m sticking to it…
On the fishing front if you are yet to get down to the Vaal
or any other yellowfish destination, then get your plans in
place cos now is the time before it gets too hot.
Cheers
The content of the magazine is tailored
to bring something to everyone. All the
current offerings in the market place have
lost site of the importance of the novice
fly fisher, and content to a large degree
is catering only to those that know the
game inside and out. We at Fly Fishing
Tails believe in catering to all and as such,
whether you are a beginner with only
a hand full of flies in his or her box, or a
seasoned vet with a photo album full of 6
pounders, Fly Fishing Tails will have
something for you.
Fly Fishing Tails is a monthly magazine and
we urge you to send it on to fellow fly
fishermen all over the globe.
AUGUST IN KOSI BAY
– NIGHT FLY FISHING EXPERIENCE
By Brandon Stonefield
Sunset at Kosi Bay Mouth Estuary
With a long cold winter, a group of 8 guys (Brandon,
Steve, Andre, Warren, Danie, Ryan, Alwyn and
Koos) decided to head for some warmer climates
and Kosi mouth was the decided destination
in search of the elusive GT’s that basically hang
around all year round from the 9th to the 12th of August. We
would camp at Utshwayelo Lodge and Camp (www.kosimouth.
co.za).
It was my birthday the Sunday and I was given the green light from
the wife to do a trip like this with the boys. With only four days to
work with, we decided to leave Johannesburg before midnight on
the 8th and get there first light and at least have a good days fishing
upon arrival.
We did bring a boat with us to try the salt and saline lakes as an
alternate option as opposed to fishing out at sea, weather dependant.
But the main aim
was to fish the mouth and
estuary area (accessible
with 4x4 or 2x4 diff lock
through the mouth reserve
gate), along with the 4x4
only road to Rocktail Bay.
A waning moon phase was
present, not greatly ideal
for the salt but could still
produce fish. Weather and
tide info printed out, as
signal is very weak in the
area for current updates.
Tides and weather all
looked very promising
after the nationwide cold
front that just passed and
we all eagerly headed to the
beach for some anticipated
action!
Fishing at the mouth on the
Thursday was very quiet but
was expected as the front
had only just passed and
the water was fairly cold and
we did not fish that evening
as we needed to acquire a
night fishing permit.
The following day (Friday)
was almost perfect, weather
wise and we all jumped into
6
Andre’s 4x4 Navara and headed for Rocktail Bay. After a long 4x4
trail we landed up at our destination, missing the pushing tide but
continued to fish the bay. We were slightly disappointed, as we did
not see any big GT’s swimming in the waves, which we were hoping
for. Steve however did manage to get a small queenfish on fly
in the surf and a couple small Natal stumpnose on bait. Beautiful
spot though and I will be back at a warmer time!
earlier that week, as they say; use dark flies for evening fly fishing,
especially for king fish and especially something that pushes water.
It was really dark now, and we had no idea where or how the fly
was landing but had to just use our skill to assume the distance
and presentation. We were getting many takes and changed
retrieves to get hook-ups. I had a DI8 sinking line and Ryan was
We headed back for a
bite and headed out
to the mouth with our
night permits to get the
pushing tide and hopefully
until high peak.
Fishing was still very
slow until early evening
but did manage a nice
springer on drop shot.
As the tide started rising
and the light started to
fade, we headed for the
mouth area in the hopes
to catch the fish coming
in. Ryan picked up a
small yellowtail kingy
and from this point I
knew things were about
to change. Fairly dark, I
put on one of my experimental
brush flies I tied
7
(river snapper), a surprise
fish, which gave me a nice
little rev.
fishing a floating with a sink
tip and Steve and Andre had
intermediates.
We managed a couple of
smallish big eye kingies and
I hooked a nice rock salmon
Something hit my fly really
hard and took off like crazy
but when your line gets a
knot in it and there is no
free flow...its bye bye fishy.
I will never know what that might have been and all my line came
flying back at me, leaving me standing there confused as to what
just happened! That’s the excitement of fishing at night...you never
know what to expect! We discovered that when we turned off
our headlamps that we had more takes for some reason and only
turned them on when we really needed to. A couple more big eyes
were caught and we called it a day and headed back to camp.
The next day (Saturday), half the group decided to hit the lakes
with the boat, which could only take 3 – 4 people on it and the rest
of us decided to fish the tide in the morning at the mouth. Fishing
was very quiet again and the wind started to pick up from a
north westerly direction but after trying a few techniques and surf
we only managed a small shad and another surprise fish, a little
threadfin.
We headed back to camp and decided to get back for the evening.
The guys on the boat could only access the big (3rd) lake due to
the tide not being deep enough to cross through to the 1st salt
lake and unfortunately were unable to find the fish.
We had a bite and headed out for our last night at the mouth for
the weekend. All geared up and with a bit of knowledge from the
night before we eagerly waited for it to get dark and the tide to
start rising.
It was still very quiet and we had one casualty; Alwyn walked
behind Warren while he was pumping a fly line and got a nice size
chartreuse clousler in the cheek. After the slight flesh wound scare
I told the guys to please be careful of flying hooks and to de-barb
all flies.
One of the guys had a take and I decided to put my big 5 inch olive
brush fly and immediately started getting pulls. Changing speed
on the retrieve, I was on to another strong little big eye kingy. Then
straight after that Ryan screams that he’s got a bus of a fish and its
taking line.
8
We shone a torch on the water
and saw he was into a good
springer, tail walking on the
water like a tarpon. Well landed,
with the assistance of everyone
pulling in their lines, he was
pretty chuffed with this fish. It
was caught on a sparsely tied
deceiver pattern.
Soon after that Ryan tied on
one of his chartreuse type brush
flies and was into a fish that felt
heavy, yet it never jumped, just
pulled hard. Finally after getting
it closer I noticed it was a beautiful
honeycomb ray hooked in
the mouth, about 1.5m in length,
with tail and about 70cm in
diameter.
An unusual catch and was
released straight away. The tide
was slowly staring to peak and
Andre gets his line wrapped
around his feet and pulls on
the line not realizing the his fly
was amongst that, only to get
it jammed into his leg. Another
reason to de-barb, have a stripping
basket and wear safety
goggles!
With that, we headed back to
camp for a few scoops, doctoring
and reminisce of the weekends
fishing we had, planning
the next trip back to this gem
of a South African North Coast
destination in the hopes that the
big boys will be present!

THE TROUT OF
THE HIGHVELD
– A REPORT ON A RECENT
MILLSTREAM TRIP
By Gareth Roocroft
Myself and my girlfriend Aimee recently
went on a trip to Millstream, 3kms
before Dullstroom. It was a great privilege
to visit this place once again, possibly for
the last time too...
We arrived at Millstream late afternoon on
Thursday, and we quickly setup and headed
to the weir called My Beauty... A few casts
produced nothing, so I changed to an orange
woolly bugger in the low light conditions, and
first cast, I was hit hard and landed a nice little
rainbow. There was plenty of wildlife around
and we were able to see a Cape Clawless Otter
and plenty of scrub hares throughout the late
afternoon session!
The next morning we were up before sunrise
and proceeded to cast every fly known to man
up until 11am with no success. We then headed
up to the upper weirs, namely Canterbury Pond
and Ferreira’s Find and then fished again at My
Beauty. We had good success at these 3 dams
and all our fish were caught on an Olive Woolly
Bugger. Aimee got 3 fish between 500 and 600
grams and I got 5 fish around about the 400
gram mark, including 2 cock fish. And that was
the day... Lots of walking and lots of casts for
a few fish, better than nothing of course! We
also saw Common Duiker, Grey Rhebok, Dassies
and a Giant Kingfisher throughout the day...
Surrounded by the beauty of nature, the 8 fish
were in truth, a bonus!
Saturday, the wind was howling and it was very
cold... The Olive Woolly Bugger struck again as I
got 3 fish: 300, 400 and 600 grams... Aimee got
a 400 gram Hen... We managed to watch a Long
Crested Eagle for a long time, and then it was
off to the recreation centre to watch the Currie
Cup.
Sunday came along, and we decided to fish
one of the trophy catch and release dams,
Solitary Reaper. I struggled, but Aimee did
really well, catching 2 beautiful fish of 1.4 and
1.6 kgs respectively. She caught them on a GRHE
fished drifting in the wind, on 5lb tippet! They
were both amazing fish in great condition, and
the 1.6kg rainbow was a PB for her... There was
a swan on the dam (an escapee from a neighbouring
farm) and there was a pair of Fish Eagles
calling nonstop throughout our session here.
We also saw a Slender Mongoose, very cool
creatures. The wind chased us back down to the
weirs and Aimee was onto the fish again, this
time on the dry fly... She missed one and then
next cast she hooked a fish of about 500 grams
on the White Wulff. I eventually managed 3 fish
on the Olive Woolly Bugger...another tough day
in paradise.
Our last day of angling was tough, very tough...
Once again all sorts of methods were tried and
explored. I got 3 more fish on an Olive Red Eye
Damsel, Olive Fritz and Black Woolly Bugger. The
birding on this day was amazing! Two new bird
species that I have never seen before and they
are not very common either! We saw an African
Rail and a Little Bittern, it was awesome! All in
all it was a fun trip with lots of fish caught in a
beautiful area. If you have never fished this part
of the world, it is a must!
Here is the summary of the fish we caught:
• Gareth - 15 Rainbow Trout: 300 grams - 600
grams
• Aimee - 7 Rainbow Trout: 400 grams -
1.6kgs
All fished released...
Flies caught on:
• Olive Woolly Bugger - 15
• GRHE - 2
• Orange Woolly Bugger - 1
• Black Woolly Bugger - 1
• Olive Red Eye Damsel - 1
• White Wulff - 1
• Olive Fritz – 1
Adams
Know your
FLIES
By Tom Lewin
The Adams is one of those patterns that
have stood the test of time and it’s a fly I
always have in my fly-box in a variety of
sizes. The Adams, tied with its traditional
collar hackle, imitates a mayfly adult
or dun and in South Africa this would
specifically be the Baetis mayfly or Blue
Winged Olive. Tied with a parachute hackle, the Adams is also a
very effective mayfly or caddis emerger pattern. I fish the Adams
in sizes 14 to 20 during Baetis hatches and try to match the fly
with the size of the hatching naturals. During a dense hatch I
prefer to cast the fly out and leave it for the fish to find, but during
a sparse hatch I’ll generally target a rising or cruising fish. In the
case of rising fish I try to get the fly to land in the rise ring as soon
as possible. With cruising fish I lead the fish by a metre or two with
my cast.
LET’S LOOK AT WHAT AWAITS
MAGALIESBURG
UNLESS THEY WAKE UP
Slime and
contaminated
mine water mixture
The Manganese operation
between the Golddumps on
Wonderfornteinspruit
Black Midge
Midges are the most prolific food-form
in our rivers and still waters and make up
a large part of the diet of trout and yellowfish.
Furthermore, when midges hatch,
fish get complete tunnel-vision and won’t
look at anything else – it’s the one time fish
genuinely get selective. If you don’t have a
serviceable midge pattern in the correct size and colour you are
going to blank! The Black Midge is a simple, effective pattern that
relies on its impressionistic qualities to fool fish. I tie and fish Black
Midges in sizes 18 to 24 during midge hatches which more often
than not occur at last light. The fly imitates the midge pupa and
I fish it in the surface film. I generally don’t target individual fish,
preferring to leave the fly in the vicinity of the rising fish. Tracking
the fly in poor light is just about impossible so if a fish rises or
bulges anywhere near my fly I strike by lifting the rod. Every now
and then there’s a fish on my line! Once again, it is most important
to match the Black Midge to the size of the hatching naturals.
The cleaning plant
Sparkle Caddis Pupa
Caddis Pupa ascending to the surface to
hatch can trigger a fish feeding frenzy like
no other insect! Fish gorge themselves as
the bugs make their way towards the water
surface but it is when the pupae become
trapped in the meniscus that they become
easy pickings. The Sparkle Caddis Pupa is
a fly that was invented by the late Gary LaFontaine and I have a
whole one side of a fly box dedicated to this pattern in different
sizes and colours. The antron fibres used to create the bubble
shape trap air and reflect light, cleverly imitating the natural
insect. I fish the Sparkle Caddis Pupa during caddis hatches in the
late evening and early morning preferring to cast the pattern out
into the vicinity of rising fish. I occasionally give the fly a twitch to
simulate a caddis struggling to shed its pupal skin. Be ready for
explosive takes and fish with “soft hands” or you will lose fish to
smash takes.
ORVIS FLY FISHING
HOW TO PREVENT ROD
Orvis goes to great lengths to prevent rod breakage. They
invest in the highest quality carbon and thermoplastic resins
to create rods that are light, responsive and durable. They
utilize very sophisticated testing machines to ensure that the design
of each rod will withstand breakage under all fishing conditions.
They carefully inspect every rod before it leaves their Vermont rod
shop, and every rod model undergoes hundreds of hours of field
testing before they begin production. They feel so strongly about
the quality of Their rods that all premium rods come with a 25-year
guarantee against breakage for any reason.
While the 25-year guarantee and the confidence that your rod will
be repaired or replaced adds comfort, a broken rod can definitely
put a damper on a trip. So here are a few tips to help prevent rod
breakage.
• Make sure your ferrules are properly seated throughout the
day. Loose ferrules create unnecessary stress at critical points
in the rod. Attach rod sections at a 45-degree angle and push
them together with a slight twist to align. This ensures that
your rod ferrules are well seated. Throughout the day, occasionally
take the time to check that your ferrules are still tight.
Over the season apply ferrule wax (included in all new rods) or
regular candle wax to ensure a snug fit. This will greatly reduce
your chance of a rod break.
• Take care in your casting, when using weighted flies, streamers,
or split shot, that you don’t hit the rod with your fly or
weight. Weighted flies travel at amazing speeds; when they hit
a rod tip they can cause a slight fracture in the carbon, increasing
your chances of a break. Water loading, roll casts, sidearmed
casts, and paying attention to the wind will help prevent
collisions between your flies and the rod.
• When stringing your fly line through your rod, take care
that you do not pull on the line while the rod is at a
steep angle. Fly rods are designed to have the force of
the fly line distributed over the entire rod. This is why a
13
BREAKAGE
few ounces of carbon can do battle with a 200lb. tarpon.
Holding onto the middle of the rod and pulling on just
the tip can cause all of the stress to be put on a very small
area of the rod (especially in longer rods). Lay your rod
down on the bank and walk along the length of the rod
while stringing it. This will reduce breakage dramatically.
Pick of the month
By Dave Gunns
The best of the
blended best?
...I think so...
• If you happen to hook a fly in a tree or on the stream
bottom, don’t jerk the rod to free it. Jerking the rod and
then jerking it again while it is already under stress can
cause failure. Instead, point the rod directly at the fly and
pull on just the fly line. The fly will come loose or break off.
• Use a rod case when transporting your rod in a boat
or car. Leaving a rod exposed to other gear that might
bang into it can cause a fracture that may result in a
broken rod later when it is under the stress of casting or
playing a fish.
• Make sure you use the appropriate leader and tippet
for your rod. Using 20lb. test on a four-weight rod makes
as much sense as using 6x tippet to land a king salmon.
Part of the sport is using light tackle to fight the fish, but
there are definitely limits to what is acceptable. If you are
unsure about what tippet range is best for your rod, visit:
www.orvis.com/leader
Following these simple steps will greatly reduce your chances
of breaking a rod, and will ensure a lifetime of enjoyment.
THE GPS
The GPS or Global Positioning System was originally developed
as a military navigation tool. However the technology
has grown along with a sub set of supporting technologies
to serve other requirements within consumer budgets.
The principle behind GPS is very simple - it works by providing a
set of geographical coordinates such as a place’s latitude, longitude
and elevation on earth. The GPS device also gives out very
accurate time. The basic functionality of GPS technology is limited
to receiving satellite signals and calculating position information.
Things like navigation systems, tracking devices, surveying and
mapping instruments are simply different applications of the
technology.
The applications range from simple car navigation systems to
highly sophisticated packages for aviation and marine navigation
and even GPS solutions for use on the golf course!
MINUTES OF A MEETING
TO DISCUSS ISSUES PERTAINING TO YELLOWFISH IN
STERKFONTEIN DAM
Photo taken by Brandon Stonefield
On 19/07/2012 Leon Barkhuizen of the Free State Department
of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental
Affairs (DETEA) convened a meeting to discuss
the conservation and protection of yellowfish in this important
fly fishing venue. The meeting was attended by DETEA officials,
guides, outfitters, anglers, a fishing magazine and the SAPS.
Among the problems and threats identified initially were:
1. Fluctuating water levels during the spawning season.
2. Poaching of breeding fish in the feeder streams.
3. The growing threat and the long term effect of bass.
4. Threat of transfer of grass carp from the Tugela storage
dams.
5. Commercial harvesting of yellowfish.
6. Disruption of spawning fish by walking on banks and
through spawning beds.
7. Bait anglers unaware of threats to yellowfish and correct
methods of handing them.
8. Lack of policing by DETEA.
9. Angling competitions.
grass carp in the Tugela system with KZN aquatic scientists to determine
the threat of translocation through the pump storage scheme.
In addition cooperation is required from stakeholders in informing
the DETEA of illegal activity and also to help write articles in the
angling media while Leon Barkhuizen will prepare an information
pamphlet and boards.
This will include the necessity of killing all bass. Disruption of
spawners is probably less of a problem than originally suggested
but anglers need to be educated. After a lengthy discussion it was
agreed that the current competitions and festivals (refer 9) were not
a problem, but in future organisers will have to apply for the necessary
permit. The meeting was also informed that the new Free State
Nature Conservation Bill and regulations will probably be promulgated
in September this year.
The complete Minutes of the meeting may be viewed at
Regarding (1) Leon Barkhuizen will follow up with Eskom to make
them aware of the threat to spawning beds. The DETEA expect to
increase their policing to combat threats such as (2) and (4) while
SAPS will also patrol. The DETEA will also discuss the presence of
Tapâm - A Fly Fishing Journey:
Big Fish...Little Stream:

Mozambique is a tropical paradise, with white coral beaches and clear blue waters which allows one to relax and enjoy the many
offered activities. Mozambique’s sunny conditions and stunning beach resorts attract visitors. Endless activites are offered including
water sports, and tours to discover the history and culture of Mozambique.
You will be impressed with Mozambique’s offering of the finest and most beautiful, as well as challenging, game fishing in Southern Africa.
Each island offers a different environment depending on what one likes. Angling is also popular in game fishing. Anglers come to Mozambique
with promises of great fishing and that is what they get and more.
As well as game fishing, Mozambique offers a great variety of salt water fly fishing; this is from Mozambique’s ideal conditions. Fly fishing is
popular on the mainland and from island beaches, a great fishing trip would be on the sandbars produced by the high tidal range. A great fly
fishing destination, InhacaIsland offers a great off shore island-style fly fishing. It is a short boat ride from Maputo. A competent fly fisher can
on a good day, hook up to 20-30 fishes. And for those who are not yet skilled in the art of fishing, lessons are available; this goes for angling
and game fishing. Fly fishers will find a great deal of bonefish in the area, especially in the Bazaruto area, which at the moment has a growing
reputation for the largest bonefish.
Zongoene Lodge
Where the Limpopo bends and winds to meet the sea there stands
a light house. And nestled between the dunes and the trees an
unspoiled paradise waits for you. The Lodge accommodates a
total of 62 guests in two bedroom family units (accommodating four) or
pool chalets (accommodating two).
All have en-suite bathrooms and sliding doors opening out onto extended
wooden balconies where you can enjoy the magnificence of your
culture, it echoes of Portuguese comfort and luxury.
Zongoene Lodge is situated at the mouth of the Limpopo River approximately
225km north of Maputo and approximately 8km by sea from Praia
de XaiXai. The Lodge is situated on 7 ha, which is surrounded by pristine
coastal forests, dunes and beaches. These forests, dunes and beaches
stretch for miles on either side of the mouth of the river. The Former President
of Mozambique, His Excellency Joaquim Chissano, officially opened
the Lodge in October 1997. Every effort was made to construct the Lodge
majority of the roofs are thatched.
