A Message from Pete-
Like a snowball rolling downhill, the Big Sky Youth
Empowerment Project (BYEP) has continued gaining
size and momentum over the past year. Thanks
to generous individuals and philanthropic business
partners – like you – we were again able to expand
both the reach and impact of our programs during
our fifth year of service to Gallatin and Park
Counties. Blending a passionate appreciation for
outdoor activities with life skills curricula, we are
changing the course of young adults’ lives – one
kid at a time.
Thank you for taking the time to peruse our
annual report. We hope you continue to appreciate
the importance of our work in the lives of our
teenagers and its relationship to the health and
vibrancy of our communities. We believe our local
youth are worthy of your investment and can’t
thank you enough for your on-going support.
Mission Statement
The Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project, Inc. believes that youth
are the World’s greatest asset. Our programs target high schoolaged
disadvantaged youth, providing them the opportunity
for empowerment through outdoor activities and life skills
curricula. We believe our responsibility is two fold: to provide
these experiences to the youth at no cost, and build community
through pro-social involvement.
Sincerely,
Pete MacFadyen
Executive Director / Founder
Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project means opportunity…
opportunity to be myself, opportunity to develop mentally,
opportunity to enjoy things I can not afford. I’m better off
because of this experience, because I have had some troubles…
and now I have a program to keep me occupied and help run.
It’s good to give back to the program, I’ve helped with fundraising,
representing with my word (I did the Public Service
Announcements on KGLT), and even wrapping Christmas gifts.
It’s important to give back, because if I didn’t there might
not be a program.
Byep needs to succeed because there are a lot of kids who need
the skills that byep brings to the equation. So it’s like 1+1=2
you got the kids, the program and you got BYEP
Program History
The Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project is committed to
providing high quality programming. This means never
enrolling more than 6 youth per group and keeping our
mentor to youth ratio high. Fiscal year 2007 will see our
largest numbers to date both in terms of youth served
and mentors enrolled. Youth and mentors spend over
150 hours together participating in an intense 12 week
adventure-based group mentoring program. Youth and
mentors spend one day per week participating in an
outdoor activity (i.e., snowboarding, skiing, fly fishing,
rock climbing, horseback riding, or white water rafting)
and one evening per week engaged in a life skills
curriculum focused on a developmentally appropriate
topic (i.e., communication, healthy choices, teamwork).
Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project is a
very wonderful program for ‘at risk’ kids
and kids that are less fortunate than
most. I have been in the program for one
year and it has brought many things more
than free gear, a lot of new friends and
great memories. The program offers a lot
of different stuff like snowboarding, fly
fishing and gil power. With out the public
generosity we would not exist.
Volunteer mentors continue to be the backbone of our organization. These generous individuals give 14 hours per week
over the course of our 12 week programs. This translates into approximately 170 hours of volunteer time per mentor.
We are enormously thankful for their dedication. These people are a testament that each of us has the opportunity to
make our community a better place.
the feeling of your skis floating over powder
is the best feeling ever, getting that feeling
makes me so happy. but when you don’t have
the gear to make it happen it is a major bummer.
big sky youth empowerment project helps with
that problem, with out them my fun would be
bottled up till next summer. byep is a great
program that gives kids the experience, the
feeling of the powder and making new buddies
to go on the ski hill with. with out donations it
would not be possible. a lot of kids don’t have
the gear and don’t know what pow feels like
and i want them to so that is why i wrote this.
please help out.
As the graphs below attest, for the past five years the
Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project has experienced
exponential financial growth. These numbers reflect
a parallel increase both in youth served and mentors
enrolled (pg. 3). We are proud to have maintained
diverse income sources while at the same time
allocating expense where it matters most, to our youth.
Please feel free to contact us with additional questions
My name is Jessica and I’ve been in the Big
Sky Youth Empowerment Project program
for about a year and it is such a privilege.
I learned so much and I think it’s so great
that the community and all the people
involved (Pete, Dave, Lesa, the mentors, etc.)
make it happen because the program offers
so much to so many people who don’t have
it so easy and don’t get the chance to go
out and experience the activities. This
program gave me a chance to learn about
myself and how to work with others. I
love this program and I hope to continue
to be in it for years to come.
