ASSISTED PERFORMANCES The Almeida schedules assisted performances in order to make theatre more accessible and enjoyable for people who may find it difficult to see or hear everything that takes place on stage. Captioned performances feature an electronic screen which displays the words being spoken on stage in time with the performance, much like the subtitles you would see on television. Audio described performances are ideal for audience members with visual impairment. We provide a discreet headset which allows you to listen to information about the set, costumes, body language and facial expressions of the performers, during pauses in the action on-stage. Our sign language interpreted performances are presented by experienced interpreters who use British Sign Language. ALMEIDA PROJECTS Almeida Projects brings together the professional experience of theatre artists working at the Almeida and the original ideas of local people in a genuine creative exchange. Image Phill Pepper Since our launch in 2003, we have devised, workshopped, written, designed, produced, created lighting and sound as well as performed with individuals, schools, colleges and community groups from across Islington. In 2006–7, our work will reach over 1,000 local people, attending and creating their own responses to Almeida productions. LOSTLINGS “What images return” Marina, TS Eliot Connecting our first three productions, Tom and Viv, The Lightning Play and There Came A Gypsy Riding, we tackle parent/child relationships. Focusing on Viv and the off-stage characters in the other two plays, we investigate and animate the plays from the perspective of the “lost children.” “Time present and time past are both perhaps present in time future” Burnt Norton, TS Eliot Why try? Where do I belong? How can history influence my future? Following on from the Lostlings project, Almeida Projects presents a series of theatrical inquiries into destiny, aspiration, nature and nurture. Inspired by our forthcoming European premiere Big White Fog, the project culminates in opportunities for the participants to present their ideas in performances either at the Almeida or in the participants’ own venues. “Where are we going?” Adam, Bridge School Between October and December, Almeida Projects is working with students with severe and profound learning difficulties attending the Bridge School in Islington. We are using projection, movement, lighting and voice to explore the journeys that the students make every day and to look ahead to the school’s move to a new site in September 2007. The project is being led by a diverse team of professional artists, supported by volunteers from the law firm Cadwalader. PROJECTIONS Projections is our initiative which focuses on continuing participation with the Almeida’s work outside and beyond school and college. HAPPY MONDAYS, our subsidised ticket programme for local schoolleavers and Projects “graduates” continues into its second year, providing opportunities for young people to see our work and to discuss theirs with each other and with Almeida artists. In 2007, we pilot BRING THE FAMILY, a chance for Projects participants to host their families at an Almeida performance.
