Welcome Dear IAESTE Friends and Supporters, Welcome to the 2003 IAESTE Annual Review incorporating the General Secretary’s Report. In recent years the IAESTE Annual Report included, in addition to the performance report on the IAESTE exchange, articles on IAESTE from members, employers and students, a report on the IAESTE Annual Conference and a brief introduction to the Association. Every other year (2001, 2003, etc.) the Report includes a list of the participating employers and educational institution for the previous two years. The inclusion of all these topics has resulted in this annual publication being more than an Annual Report hence the new title. The 2003 Annual Review shows the readers an Association concerned with its performance in the service of students and employers. The General Secretary’s Annual Report summarises the performance of the members and cooperating institutions during the past exchange year. This performance is compared in most case with progress from previous years. The details are all here and, even in these trying times, confirms IAESTE as an Association focused on its Aims and the needs of employers and undergraduates. The IAESTE Aims are clear. They are to provide professional development to students, to promote understanding of other cultures and to achieve in close association with our employers, a quality experience for the student and the employer while getting a job well done. 2002 was an exceptional year for IAESTE. Our exchange between members and co-operating institution dropped for the first time since 1995 below 5000. When we include the exchange with non-members (136 students from 9 non-member countries) the exchange was 5053. The drop in numbers was anticipated but nevertheless disappointing. We understand the difficulties being face by employers and we appreciate the 3693 employers that provided the work placements in 2002. This was a drop of 502 employers from 2001 and almost mirrors the drop in the exchange. The number of educational institutions participating increased slightly to 1336. The increase in the participating educational institutions can be attributed to the increase in the number of new cooperating institutions joining the Association. IAESTE currently has 91 members and co-operating institutions in 83 countries. The new co-operating institution joining IAESTE during 2002 were from Bangladesh, India, Iran, Liechtenstein and Nigeria. Employers remain the corner stone of IAESTE activity and we are pleased to be able to offer employers from Canada, Greece, Sweden and Uruguay the opportunity to air their views on the exchange in this year’s Review. I would like to thank all the contributors to this year’s Review. IAESTE looks forward to continuing our partnership with industry, the universities and their students in the preparation and development of young engineers, scientists and other professionals during 2003. Finally, I would like to thank you all for your support over the past 6 years. I complete my final term as IAESTE General Secretary in January 2004. It has been a pleasure working for IAESTE and with so many fine people throughout the world. IAESTE is truly an amazing Association. Founded 55 years ago, IAESTE is still working to provide opportunities for students and in our ever changing world it is clear that the ideals of work related to study in an environment that broadens understanding of cultural and other differences must contribute to the development of skilled, tolerant and aware professionals.
