Skate Park Event February 2009 PIAF Floating Films March 2009 Autumn River Festival April 2009 Wag and Walk May 2009 June Community Concert June 2009 Combined Church Service June 2009 Jazz Community Concert Art Awards The City held the Art Awards and Exhibition again in 2008-09 at the Noranda Shopping Village. More than 150 entries for the exhibition were received. The Bayswater Art Society maintained an active presence at the exhibition over the week, providing painting and drawing demonstrations for the public to enjoy. Avon Descent Finish Line Event Riverside Gardens was the location for this record breaking event. Following heavy rainfall in the preceding weeks, water levels were the highest in nearly twenty years providing perfect conditions for both paddle craft and power boats. Almost all records were broken on the water during the August 2008 event. Autumn River Festival A multicultural stage program entertained around 12,000 visitors to Riverside Gardens during the April 2009 event. A range of new initiatives including Dunk the Councillor and Councillor’s Kitchen were well received, as was the Community Olympics. 8 city of bayswater annual report 2008-09
Charity events The Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul Society received in excess of $21,650 and food packages from community donations and auctions staged by the City. The charity events were the Carols by Candlelight and the Charity Golf Tournament. The 2008 Charity Golf Day was a roaring success with several new initiatives introduced for 2008 that resulted in a 50 percent increase in funds raised compared to the previous year. Community Sport and Recreation Facility Fund The City was successful in securing $671,495 from the Department of Sport and Recreation as part funding toward the following projects to be completed next financial year: • $500,000 towards the sports hall and change room facilities within the new multi million dollar Maylands multipurpose centre; • $91,575 to assist with the upgrade of sports field floodlighting at Houghton Reserve to benefit football and softball; • $79,920 to assist with the upgrade of sports field floodlighting at Noranda Sporting Complex to benefit soccer. The new $1.3 million pavilion at RA Cook Reserve was completed and handed over to Morley Sporting Club in April 2009. The Department of Sport and Recreation contributed more than $200,000 from the Community Sport and Recreation Facility Fund. Facility infrastructure upgrades Two sporting facilities – at Wotton Reserve and Frank Drago Reserve - received significant upgrades during 2008-09. Wotton Reserve can now host evening floodlit soccer matches after an upgrade to the sports field floodlighting. Frank Drago Reserve now offers an extended grass field training area, as well as training ground floodlighting to meet the Australian Standard for large ball sports. A number of playground facilities were replaced in order to meet Australian Standards in accordance with the City’s 15 year Playground Upgrade Plan. Notable sites included: Joan Rycroft Reserve, Lower Hillcrest Reserve, Feredy Reserve and Birkett Street Reserve. A new community playground was installed at Lightning Park. Soft fall safety surfacing was installed at Upper Hillcrest Reserve and additional shade sails at Riverside Gardens. Robert Thompson Reserve and Halliday House received Federal Infrastructure Funding to enhance facilities. Halliday House now has an outdoor entertainment and function area for weddings and community functions. Robert Thompson Reserve has had pathways extended across the park to encourage walking, skating and informal family recreation. Sport and Recreation Club Development Program In partnership with the City of Bayswater, City of Swan and Department of Sport and Recreation, the Club Development Program continued to offer high quality assistance to local sport and recreation clubs. This financial year saw the launch of Blue Ribbon Clubs, an incentive based club accreditation program providing guidance and assistance to all local sporting and recreational clubs in developing high quality management systems and procedures. Administration Citizenship ceremonies Seven citizenship ceremonies were conducted in 2008-09, with around 380 people becoming Australian citizens. The largest ceremony was held as part of the Australia Day celebrations for the first time at the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre and incorporated an Australia Day barbeque celebration. Scholarships The City awarded scholarships to 17 talented students so they could further their interests in the fields of education, sports, visual arts and music. Garden Awards The annual Garden Awards are open to residents and businesses to encourage community support for our Garden City concept and encourage civic pride. In 2008, eight awards were made in four categories.
