ROUNDABOUT
What is a Roundabout?<br />
A <strong>roundabout</strong> is a circular intersection where traffic<br />
flows counter-clockwise around a center island.<br />
Benefits of a <strong>roundabout</strong>:<br />
• Improved traffic flows<br />
• Less vehicle delay and pollution<br />
• Reduced motorist and pedestrian injury collisions<br />
and fatalities, and<br />
• Increased pedestrian safety<br />

Going Straight<br />
How to Drive in a Roundabout<br />
• When approaching a <strong>roundabout</strong>, SLOW DOWN.<br />
• Look at the lane sign and choose the correct entry lane.<br />
• Yield to the pedestrians at the crosswalk, they have the<br />
right-of-way.<br />
• When entering a <strong>roundabout</strong>, yield to the vehicles already<br />
in the <strong>roundabout</strong>.<br />
• Merge into traffic when there is an adequate safe gap.<br />
• Continue through the <strong>roundabout</strong> until you reach your exit.<br />
Do not change lanes.<br />
• When exiting the <strong>roundabout</strong>, signal and yield to<br />
pedestrians.<br />
• Do not pass other vehicles in the <strong>roundabout</strong>.<br />
• Give large vehicles extra space because they might use<br />
both lanes.<br />

Tips for Pedestrians<br />
• Step up to the curb by the designated crosswalk and<br />
extend your arm.<br />
• Wait for the drivers to completely stop before stepping<br />
onto the street.<br />
• Look and listen for a safe gap in the traffic.<br />
• Cross one approach at a time, using the splitter island to<br />
check for approaching traffic.<br />
• Cross only at the designated crosswalks; never cross to<br />
the central island.<br />
Tips for Drivers in<br />
Large Vehicles<br />
• When approaching a <strong>roundabout</strong>, take up both lanes.<br />
• Use both lanes when in the <strong>roundabout</strong>.<br />
• Do not leave space on either side to pass.<br />
Signaling in a Roundabout<br />
• Signal right as you approach your exit in the <strong>roundabout</strong>.<br />
Tips for Cyclists<br />
• Cyclists have two options when approaching a<br />
<strong>roundabout</strong>:<br />
For beginner cyclists:<br />
• Dismount and walk your bicycle to the pedestrian<br />
crosswalk.<br />
• Follow the Tips for Pedestrians.<br />
For experienced cyclists:<br />
• Ride as if you were driving a car.<br />
• Merge into the travel lane before the shoulder ends<br />
and ride in the middle of the lane, not near the curb.<br />
• Use hand signals and signal as you were a motorist<br />
while watching out for driver’s blind spots.<br />
Emergency Vehicles<br />
• If you have not entered the <strong>roundabout</strong>, pull over<br />
to the right, if possible, and allow the emergency<br />
vehicle to pass you.<br />
• If you are in the <strong>roundabout</strong>, proceed to your exit<br />
and continue pass the splitter island and then<br />
pull over to the right.<br />
• Never stop inside the <strong>roundabout</strong>.

This figure shows the <strong>new</strong> <strong>roundabout</strong> at the Kenmount Road/ Karwood Drive<br />
intersection located in Paradise, NL. The <strong>roundabout</strong> will be in operation<br />
in September 2014.<br />
KARWOOD DRIVE<br />
The figure shows a variety of signs and pavement markings that will be<br />
seen while driving through the <strong>roundabout</strong>. Yield signs, crosswalk<br />
signs, one-way signs and directional signs.<br />
Remember, always yield to the vehicles in the circle and travel in<br />
the counter-clockwise direction (enter on the right).<br />
