Dr. James Winn
Described by his colleagues as modest, unassuming, gracious,
and utterly reliable, Dr. James (Jim) Winn is a distinguished
educator who has truly influenced the caliber of musical talent
within the state with his high level of professionalism and
dedication to musical education. Winn earned advanced degrees
at the New England Conservatory of Music and the University
of Michigan before moving on to a distinguished career that
includes more than ten years as solo pianist for the New York
City Ballet at Lincoln Center and professional ensemble work
with the New York New Music Ensemble, Hexagon, the Chamber
Music Society of Lincoln Center, Telluride Chamber Music Festival
and the Argenta Trio, the resident chamber group at University of
Nevada, Reno.
Winn’s faculty appointments include those at the University of
Texas, the University of Michigan, the New England Conservatory
of Music, and the Aspen Music Festival. Harvard, New York
University, Yale, Peabody Conservatory, Cornell, and Universidad
Veracruzana in Mexico are among the academic institutions that
have hosted Dr. Winn’s master classses. Dr. Kenneth Osowski,
Assistant Professor of Music at York College of Pennsylvania
wrote in a nomination letter that Winn was “…easily the biggest
influence on my decision to pursue a serious career in classical
music. In his performances, I witnessed, and continue to witness,
the infinite possibilities of expression in music performed with
intelligence, passion and technical precision.”
Winn is featured as soloist, chamber musician, or composer on
more than two dozen CDs, performing with artists as violinist
Rolf Schulte and interpreting the works of contemporary
composers such as John Adams, Michael Colgrass, and Melinda
Wagner.
A recipient of the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Liberal
Arts’ prestigious Mousel/Feltner award for creative activity and
an Artist Fellowship in the Performing Arts from the Nevada Arts
Council, Dr. James Winn continually brings joy and enlightenment
to the people of our state.
