Excellence in the <strong>Arts</strong><br />

Dr. James Winn<br />

Described by his colleagues as modest, unassuming, gracious,<br />

and utterly reliable, Dr. James (Jim) Winn is a distinguished<br />

educator who has truly influenced the caliber <strong>of</strong> musical talent<br />

within the state with his high level <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism and<br />

dedication to musical education. Winn earned advanced degrees<br />

at the New England Conservatory <strong>of</strong> Music and the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Michigan before moving on to a distinguished career that<br />

includes more than ten years as solo pianist for the New York<br />

City Ballet at Lincoln Center and pr<strong>of</strong>essional ensemble work<br />

with the New York New Music Ensemble, Hexagon, the Chamber<br />

Music Society <strong>of</strong> Lincoln Center, Telluride Chamber Music Festival<br />

and the Argenta Trio, the resident chamber group at University <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Nevada</strong>, Reno.<br />

Winn’s faculty appointments include those at the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Texas, the University <strong>of</strong> Michigan, the New England Conservatory<br />

<strong>of</strong> Music, and the Aspen Music Festival. Harvard, New York<br />

University, Yale, Peabody Conservatory, Cornell, and Universidad<br />

Veracruzana in Mexico are among the academic institutions that<br />

have hosted Dr. Winn’s master classses. Dr. Kenneth Osowski,<br />

Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Music at York College <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania<br />

wrote in a nomination letter that Winn was “…easily the biggest<br />

influence on my decision to pursue a serious career in classical<br />

music. In his performances, I witnessed, and continue to witness,<br />

the infinite possibilities <strong>of</strong> expression in music performed with<br />

intelligence, passion and technical precision.”<br />

Winn is featured as soloist, chamber musician, or composer on<br />

more than two dozen CDs, performing with artists as violinist<br />

Rolf Schulte and interpreting the works <strong>of</strong> contemporary<br />

composers such as John Adams, Michael Colgrass, and Melinda<br />

Wagner.<br />

A recipient <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nevada</strong>, Reno’s College <strong>of</strong> Liberal<br />

<strong>Arts</strong>’ prestigious Mousel/Feltner award for creative activity and<br />

an Artist Fellowship in the Performing <strong>Arts</strong> from the <strong>Nevada</strong> <strong>Arts</strong><br />

<strong>Council</strong>, Dr. James Winn continually brings joy and enlightenment<br />

to the people <strong>of</strong> our state.
