The La Cueva Boys’ basketball
team is starting off well. With a
solid line up, it’s going to be hard to
defeat the Bears this year. Even though
the La Cueva lost Brandon Holland,
Scott Gracey, and big man Bryan
Pullan, the Bears will be stacked with
talent this year.
With returning players like
Ryan Daniels, Andy Konash, Jeron
McIntosh, and Matt Nordaker at the
guard positions and Jamie Ocksrider
and Greyson Wieczorek standing tall
at the post position, La Cueva will be
hard to beat.
Although the Bears have
many returning players from last year,
they also have some new ones with
talent. These players include Dale
Sanchez, a transfer from Belen who
also helped the football team and will
be playing forward for the Bears.
Caleb Kock, Ali Ahmed and
Charlie Hiemerl will be getting some
action at the post position. Chris
Cordova and Dan Koller will be helping
out at guard.
“ We have all been playing
together for years so we are all comfortable
with each other on the court,”
said senior post Wieczorek
Although the Bears are flying
high they are still ranked behind
powerhouse Cibola High School, lead
by senior Kasey Cunningham. Cibola
came to La Cueva on Dec. 1 and took
it to the Bears, winning by a score of
91-66. Cunningham scored 30 points
and grabbed 23 rebounds for Cibola.
The Bears will have to beat the Cougars
in the postseason if they plan to
win state.
The Bears are coming into
this season with goals.
“ Our goals for this season
is to win district then to go back to
the pit and win state,” said senior
guard Konash.
The players are all motivated
because they know they have a
chance to get to the championship
trophy.
The Bears are special because
they have the best guards in
the state, lead by senior guard Ryan
Daniels. Daniels steps his game up
for the season and amazes spectators
with his performance on the
court. J.P. Barela, another phenomenal
guard, still uses his criss-crossing
hands to confuse opponents’ defenses.
These two senior guards will
be leading the team with their ambition
to win and their dedication to
leadership.
The Bears have the talent,
they have the ambition, and they have
desire to bring a title back to La
what they do best, which is take out
anyone who stands in their way of the
On your mark, get set,
swim! It’s that time of year again.
After taking first place at the All-
City meet and third in the State meet
last season, the girls swimming and
diving team is back and looking
stronger than ever.
With the return of head
coach Vince Sanchez, and the welcoming
of a new assistant coach Jessica
Sydell, the Lady Bears are looking
to steal the swimming show
again this year.
“Our coaches Vince and
Jessica are great. They challenge us
to rise above the rest and dominate
the water,” said senior captain
Caitlin Locke.
With the return of several
strong upperclassmen swimmers
and returning seniors Amanda
Quillen, Caitlin Locke, and Sarah
Leon, they are a force to be reckoned
with.
“I think we have a really
strong team this year,” said junior
Amanda Maes, who finished second
place in the 100-meter freestyle in
last year’s state competition.
The Lady Bears will had
their first meet, the Barney Relays,
on Nov. 19 at the Albuquerque
Academy.
