A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> an Astronomer<br />
My day usually beg<strong>in</strong>s early, so I can be <strong>in</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fice ahead <strong>of</strong> the traffic. I check the latest papers which have<br />
been published on the astro-ph web list<strong>in</strong>gs and download the ones <strong>of</strong> most <strong>in</strong>terest to me. My research area is <strong>in</strong><br />
gamma-ray bursts, which is a very hot topic <strong>in</strong> astrophysics. <strong>The</strong>re are reports <strong>of</strong> new discoveries almost every day.<br />
<strong>The</strong> bursts are tremendous explosions which we can detect even to the edge <strong>of</strong> the visible universe.<br />
A career as an astronomer is not for someone who likes the same rout<strong>in</strong>e every day (or night). This morn<strong>in</strong>g, I need<br />
to f<strong>in</strong>alise a proposal I am writ<strong>in</strong>g with colleagues, to get observ<strong>in</strong>g time on an orbit<strong>in</strong>g telescope, which can detect<br />
gamma-ray bursts. <strong>The</strong>re is tough competition to get such data, so I need to make a strong scientific case, backed<br />
up by plenty <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>stak<strong>in</strong>g research and detailed calculations to show that the <strong>in</strong>strument has the capability to<br />
make the measurements we need.<br />
Although most <strong>of</strong> my data comes from orbit<strong>in</strong>g satellites, I also make observations from the ground us<strong>in</strong>g optical<br />
telescopes. A trip to a telescope is fun but exhaust<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce it <strong>in</strong>volves stay<strong>in</strong>g up all night every night for about<br />
a week. A plentiful supply <strong>of</strong> sugary snacks is essential to keep the bra<strong>in</strong> alert at 3am. With large<br />
telescopes there are <strong>of</strong>ten technical problems, which need to be dealt with on the fly, s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
there are usually <strong>in</strong>tense time pressures to make as many observations as possible<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g the observ<strong>in</strong>g run.<br />
After work<strong>in</strong>g on my proposal for a couple <strong>of</strong> hours, I need a break and go up to<br />
the research lab to see how the postgraduate students are gett<strong>in</strong>g on. Two<br />
<strong>of</strong> my students are build<strong>in</strong>g a robotic telescope, called Watcher, <strong>in</strong> South<br />
Africa. This will be able to operate automatically and move very quickly<br />
around the sky to detect gamma-ray bursts at visible wavelengths.<br />
It is a very excit<strong>in</strong>g, but demand<strong>in</strong>g, project and there are always<br />
unforeseen issues to be discussed and solved with<strong>in</strong> the team.<br />
Today, we are plann<strong>in</strong>g our upcom<strong>in</strong>g trip to South Africa to get the<br />
system fully operational.<br />
After lunch with colleagues, I look over my lecture notes for my<br />
1st year astronomy class <strong>in</strong> the afternoon. Prepar<strong>in</strong>g course<br />
materials takes a long time and I have already prepared<br />
this lecture well <strong>in</strong> advance. Today’s topics are neutron<br />
stars and black holes. It’s wonderful to teach the subject<br />
which is closest to my research <strong>in</strong>terests. This course<br />
is open to all students and we usually end up hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
discussions about life, the universe and everyth<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
After class, I bump <strong>in</strong>to a colleague on the<br />
corridor and we end up hav<strong>in</strong>g a lengthy<br />
conversation about how to ensure that our 1st<br />
year students really understand the difficult<br />
concepts they encounter <strong>in</strong> physics. <strong>The</strong>n<br />
it’s time to put the f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g touches to my<br />
proposal before head<strong>in</strong>g home, th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
about clear skies and maybe sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
up my telescope <strong>in</strong> the back garden<br />
for some star-gaz<strong>in</strong>g. But not<br />
before watch<strong>in</strong>g the Simpsons<br />
with the family!<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Community Engagement Manager<br />
I work as a Community Engagement Manager with the Inspire <strong>Ireland</strong> Foundation (www.<strong>in</strong>spireireland.ie), which<br />
uses technology to help young people lead happier lives. A far cry from the lab I hear you say, and you would be<br />
right! My work revolves around promot<strong>in</strong>g our new onl<strong>in</strong>e service ReachOut.com (www.reachout.com) and gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
young people <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> improv<strong>in</strong>g the service.<br />
My job is pretty varied, but my day usually starts with me com<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>of</strong>fice and check<strong>in</strong>g my emails to see if<br />
anyone from our youth advisory network has been <strong>in</strong> touch. I then go out to meet people on college campuses or<br />
youth centres across <strong>Ireland</strong>. I am usually try<strong>in</strong>g to plan events or workshops with people which we then deliver<br />
<strong>in</strong> partnership with Students’ Unions or youth centres. Our events help to promote our work and our workshops<br />
focus on storytell<strong>in</strong>g to help young people create <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g personal stories for the site. My day ends when I<br />
come back to the <strong>of</strong>fice and I send some more emails, maybe write a blog for ReachOut.com or catch up with<br />
other staff members and plan the next few days.<br />
I was recently <strong>in</strong>vited to jo<strong>in</strong> RTÉ’s show Two Tube (http://www.rte.ie/trte/twotube/ ) as their<br />
Science and Technology contributor. I have a regular slot where I talk about the latest<br />
news <strong>in</strong> the world <strong>of</strong> science and technology. It is great to weave science <strong>in</strong>to TV<br />
programmes and <strong>in</strong>spire people to see science as someth<strong>in</strong>g useful <strong>in</strong> everyday<br />
life, like <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g people understand the best way to tackle problems or<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g out about science events <strong>in</strong> which they can become <strong>in</strong>volved.<br />
While both <strong>of</strong> these roles ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>volve market<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
communications, physics has been a great help to me and provided<br />
some valuable skills that I regularly use. My physics background<br />
helps me to critically and objectively assess what’s work<strong>in</strong>g best<br />
and also helps me to plan ahead <strong>in</strong> a structured manner. While<br />
do<strong>in</strong>g my degree I learned to communicate complex and<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g topics to various audiences, which means that I<br />
can communicate our ideas to people easily and effectively.<br />
Hav<strong>in</strong>g a physics degree <strong>in</strong> my l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> work also makes for<br />
an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g talk<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t at meet<strong>in</strong>gs, which is always<br />
a good th<strong>in</strong>g!<br />

where I speak <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> large groups <strong>of</strong> people<br />
about the importance <strong>of</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g care <strong>of</strong> their<br />

with young people <strong>in</strong> youth centres on<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g storyl<strong>in</strong>es and short films. <strong>The</strong><br />
skills I learned from physics have been<br />

positive impact <strong>in</strong> our society...it’s<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Computational Physicist<br />
My work day beg<strong>in</strong>s around 9:00, depend<strong>in</strong>g on the number 10 bus. Sometimes there isn’t one for a half an hour<br />
and then they come all at once. I always wonder if five 10s come <strong>in</strong> a row is that the same as one big 50?<br />
As a physicist, I always th<strong>in</strong>k about systems and how they work, whether I am at work or, as usual at 8:45 <strong>in</strong> the<br />
morn<strong>in</strong>g, wait<strong>in</strong>g for a bus. For example, when the buses get bunched together, should the drivers wait for the<br />
lead bus to get ahead before cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g? But, by wait<strong>in</strong>g, no one goes anywhere. And how does the system<br />
work when affected by outside <strong>in</strong>fluences (traffic, ra<strong>in</strong>, an accident) or, <strong>in</strong> the language <strong>of</strong> physics, perturbed by<br />
external forces?<br />
Th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about how th<strong>in</strong>gs work, from buses to quantum physics, to laser-produced plasmas, are the hallmarks<br />
<strong>of</strong> all physicists.<br />
Hav<strong>in</strong>g arrived at my <strong>of</strong>fice, I start as almost everyone does by turn<strong>in</strong>g on my computer. As a<br />
computational physicist who specialises <strong>in</strong> modell<strong>in</strong>g laser-produced plasmas, I couldn’t<br />
work without an extremely fast computer, capable <strong>of</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g more calculations than<br />
imag<strong>in</strong>able. If I am develop<strong>in</strong>g a model, I spend the day ‘runn<strong>in</strong>g’ and test<strong>in</strong>g my<br />
program. All the equations get coded <strong>in</strong>to the program. I have to check for bugs,<br />
remov<strong>in</strong>g anyth<strong>in</strong>g from typos to correctly cod<strong>in</strong>g an algorithm which is the<br />
exact ‘recipe’ for how to calculate a solution.<br />
<strong>The</strong>n the program is ready for field test<strong>in</strong>g, compar<strong>in</strong>g the theoretical to<br />
experimental results. In the Spectroscopy lab, there are experimental<br />
physicists, who record spectra, a picture <strong>of</strong> the light radiation given<br />
<strong>of</strong>f at different frequencies. By compar<strong>in</strong>g theory to experiment,<br />
we can understand more about the system, <strong>in</strong> this case the<br />
<strong>in</strong>teraction <strong>of</strong> light and matter. Today, models are at the core <strong>of</strong><br />
computational physics.<br />
Modell<strong>in</strong>g physical systems is great fun. It’s like a<br />
computer game, but <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> ward<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f evil trolls<br />
or jump<strong>in</strong>g plumbers with a joystick, I get to create<br />
the game, the physics, to help see how the real<br />
world works. What could be more <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
challeng<strong>in</strong>g than try<strong>in</strong>g to predict the outcome <strong>of</strong><br />
an experiment before the experiment?<br />

At the end <strong>of</strong> my day, I walk the three miles<br />
home. It’s nice to give atoms and buses a<br />
break. Alas, as I walk, I wonder how the<br />
traffic button at a pedestrian crosswalk<br />
works. That system I may never<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Development Aid Researcher<br />
A typical day? I don’t th<strong>in</strong>k I’ve had a typical day <strong>in</strong> a long time. My work<strong>in</strong>g life is split <strong>in</strong>to two almost parallel<br />
existences. For the past 4 years, <strong>in</strong> addition to be<strong>in</strong>g a physics lecturer <strong>in</strong> an Irish medical college, I’ve also been<br />
runn<strong>in</strong>g a multi-country study <strong>of</strong> solar dis<strong>in</strong>fection (SODIS) <strong>of</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water for use <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries. SODIS is<br />
a household water treatment where contam<strong>in</strong>ated water is stored <strong>in</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary plastic bottles which are placed <strong>in</strong> direct<br />
sunlight for a m<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>of</strong> 6 hours. <strong>The</strong> action <strong>of</strong> solar heat<strong>in</strong>g and solar ultraviolet light comb<strong>in</strong>es to <strong>in</strong>activate the<br />
microbial pathogens <strong>in</strong> the water. My research <strong>in</strong>volves health impact assessments (HIAs) <strong>of</strong> SODIS <strong>in</strong> Cambodia,<br />
S. Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe as well as lab-based research <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong>, the U.K., Spa<strong>in</strong> and Switzerland<br />
(see www.rcsi.ie/sodis) My development aid work <strong>in</strong> the past has <strong>in</strong>cluded activities as diverse as chas<strong>in</strong>g<br />
baboons away from water holes so that I can take water quality samples, to advis<strong>in</strong>g the M<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong> Health <strong>of</strong><br />
the Mexican State <strong>of</strong> Yucatan on how to use SODIS to provide clean water <strong>in</strong> a post-hurricane disaster situation.<br />
Last week when I was on an <strong>in</strong>spection visit <strong>of</strong> the health impact assessment <strong>in</strong> Cambodia, my day started at 6.30am.<br />
I’d get up, take my anti-malaria pill, check for overnight bites (mosquitoes and bed-bugs seem to love me more than<br />
the locals), check my boots for lizards or scorpions before gett<strong>in</strong>g dressed, and then meet<strong>in</strong>g the rest <strong>of</strong> team for<br />
a brief<strong>in</strong>g over breakfast. <strong>The</strong> team consists <strong>of</strong> Cambodian field <strong>of</strong>ficers and data collectors who work with CARE-<br />
Cambodia, a collaborat<strong>in</strong>g aid agency.<br />
We pile <strong>in</strong>to the SUV and head out. After an hour we arrive <strong>in</strong> the first hamlet. <strong>The</strong>se are part <strong>of</strong> the test<br />
group so they have been given plastic bottles for SODIS. I check how many participat<strong>in</strong>g children<br />
are <strong>in</strong> this hamlet, how many bottles there are and the location where bottles are exposed to<br />
sunlight. Through an <strong>in</strong>terpreter I ask if they have any problems or questions. <strong>The</strong> villagers<br />
don’t let us leave until after we had a cup <strong>of</strong> hot tea (it’s gett<strong>in</strong>g up to 36°C and very<br />
humid). CARE have already conducted background tests on the pump water and<br />
water stored <strong>in</strong> the houses. In other countries I’ve also had to collect samples <strong>of</strong> the<br />
childrens’ faeces for analysis <strong>of</strong> parasite burden, but luckily it’s not needed here.<br />
We visit about 8 or 9 hamlets <strong>in</strong> total. We also must pay our respects to the<br />
village commune leaders <strong>in</strong> each location so that they can tell us how many<br />
households are participat<strong>in</strong>g and what problems they might be hav<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
After return<strong>in</strong>g to the “hotel” - I use that phrase loosely s<strong>in</strong>ce there is<br />
no runn<strong>in</strong>g water, air conditioner, mosquito nets or locks on the door<br />
- we have a debrief meet<strong>in</strong>g with the team over a communal meal<br />
that even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a local eat<strong>in</strong>g establishment and plan tomorrow’s<br />
activities. Back <strong>in</strong> the hotel I drag the bed away from the wall s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
I’ve learned from cruel experience that there are few th<strong>in</strong>gs more<br />
unnerv<strong>in</strong>g than a lizard fall<strong>in</strong>g onto your head <strong>in</strong> the middle <strong>of</strong><br />
the night. I’m <strong>in</strong> bed by 9pm and drift <strong>of</strong>f to the sound <strong>of</strong> a male<br />
gecko tell<strong>in</strong>g the local females that he’s somewhere <strong>in</strong> my<br />
room but I’m happy <strong>in</strong> the knowledge that he’s feast<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
the mozzies that otherwise would be feast<strong>in</strong>g on me!<br />
It’s hard but reward<strong>in</strong>g work that has enabled me to work<br />
with some <strong>of</strong> the most impressive and dedicated people<br />
I have ever met. None <strong>of</strong> this would have been possible<br />
were it not for the fact that I was a physicist <strong>in</strong> the<br />
right place at the right time.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> an Econophysicist<br />
Arrive at the <strong>of</strong>fice, not so early <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g. I prefer to work dur<strong>in</strong>g the even<strong>in</strong>gs, it is more <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> first<br />
th<strong>in</strong>g that I do is to check the new articles related to my field on the <strong>Physics</strong> arXiv, an onl<strong>in</strong>e archive with many <strong>of</strong><br />
the most recent articles published <strong>in</strong> a wide range <strong>of</strong> branches <strong>of</strong> physics.<br />
I spend some time prepar<strong>in</strong>g everyth<strong>in</strong>g (registration and travel) for a conference that will take place <strong>in</strong><br />
two months. It is always very important to present our work at <strong>in</strong>ternational conferences. However, <strong>in</strong> an<br />
<strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary field like m<strong>in</strong>e the comments <strong>of</strong> researchers from different backgrounds have even more<br />
importance.<br />
Because <strong>of</strong> this, I leave my <strong>of</strong>fice to meet a collaborator at the School <strong>of</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Studies. Some progress <strong>in</strong><br />
our work is made when I present him with the new results about the existence (or not) <strong>of</strong> a real estate bubble <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Ireland</strong>.<br />
After lunch, I have my Econophysics group meet<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> first topic that we discuss is the<br />
future <strong>of</strong> our work on correlations <strong>of</strong> stocks on the London Stock Exchange. This work<br />
was based on nuclear physics techniques applied to a time series <strong>of</strong> stocks. A<br />
network <strong>of</strong> stocks, whose connections meant strong correlations, was built to study<br />
the cluster <strong>of</strong> stocks <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial sectors.<br />
<strong>The</strong> second topic is about our study on wealth distributions <strong>in</strong> societies.<br />
We compute models and compare it with real data from U.K., <strong>Ireland</strong> and<br />
Portugal. Some <strong>of</strong> these results are <strong>in</strong> a chapter that we are writ<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
an econophysics book.<br />
After the meet<strong>in</strong>g, I return to my <strong>of</strong>fice. Back to bus<strong>in</strong>ess on my<br />
computer! My work is divided <strong>in</strong> computational and analytical<br />
studies. In the computational one, I construct programs to<br />
simulate models or to analyse data. In the analytical study,<br />
I work on some maths and physics together to f<strong>in</strong>d the<br />
underly<strong>in</strong>g nature <strong>of</strong> theory. Right now I’m develop<strong>in</strong>g new<br />
rout<strong>in</strong>es to one <strong>of</strong> my programs <strong>in</strong> order to obta<strong>in</strong> better<br />
results.<br />
Time for a hot cappucc<strong>in</strong>o break. I pick one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
many articles piled on my desk. It is amaz<strong>in</strong>g how<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Failure Analysis Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<br />
Arrive at the <strong>of</strong>fice at 8.30am and log on to my email account. I check to see if there are any important emails from<br />
my sales colleagues <strong>in</strong> Germany. <strong>The</strong> company manufactures comput<strong>in</strong>g chips. As my job ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>volves failure<br />
analysis <strong>of</strong> customer returns it is important that I keep <strong>in</strong> contact with the sales eng<strong>in</strong>eers to prioritise claims. This<br />
morn<strong>in</strong>g there are no urgent emails so I have the freedom <strong>of</strong> prioritis<strong>in</strong>g my own claims.<br />
I beg<strong>in</strong> analysis on one particular claim which is for an important customer. <strong>The</strong> first step is visual <strong>in</strong>spection us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a microscope. <strong>The</strong> device has been <strong>in</strong> application and is <strong>in</strong> poor condition so I remove excess flux and solder us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a solder<strong>in</strong>g iron.<br />
<strong>The</strong> next step is IV Curve Trace. This method checks the diode characteristics <strong>of</strong> each p<strong>in</strong> on the device. This<br />
technique will tell me if excessive voltage or current has damaged any p<strong>in</strong>s. This time, all the p<strong>in</strong>s have passed.<br />
Next I x-ray the device to see if there is any <strong>in</strong>ternal damage such as broken bond wires or a cracked chip. <strong>The</strong><br />
device is <strong>in</strong> good condition and passes x-ray. <strong>The</strong> next step <strong>in</strong> analysis is the most important step – the device<br />
is tested us<strong>in</strong>g a mass production test program. This will test the functionality <strong>of</strong> the device and from the<br />
customers po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view is the ma<strong>in</strong> test. <strong>The</strong> device is tested on a special mass production<br />
test board. If it passes this test this usually means that the customer has experienced a<br />
problem with their application which is not due to our device. However <strong>in</strong> this case the<br />
device has failed.<br />
1pm – and time for d<strong>in</strong>ner! Now that my most important claim is tested I have<br />
time for other issues. Part <strong>of</strong> my job <strong>in</strong>volves QT test<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong>se are qualification<br />
tests for new devices. Today, one <strong>of</strong> the QT’s needs special analysis. This<br />
will tell me if there is any delam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong>side the device package. On<br />
<strong>in</strong>spection <strong>of</strong> the devices, all are ok. This is good news and the people<br />
<strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> this device <strong>in</strong> Japan are <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>of</strong> our results. <strong>The</strong>y are<br />
very pleased.<br />

I now return to my claim from earlier <strong>in</strong> the day. I exam<strong>in</strong>e the<br />
datalog and discuss it with my supervisor. We determ<strong>in</strong>e the root<br />
cause <strong>of</strong> the fail and I beg<strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g the report. When the report<br />
is f<strong>in</strong>ished I send it to the Sales and Market<strong>in</strong>g representatives<br />
<strong>in</strong> Germany and close it <strong>of</strong>f on our database.<br />
3.30pm – tea break. When I return to the <strong>of</strong>fice there are<br />
a couple <strong>of</strong> emails with reports from Japan. It is also my<br />
job to check failure analysis reports from Japan and<br />
send them to the sales people <strong>in</strong> Germany.<br />

Every day is different. I get to use complex analysis<br />
equipment from locations all around the plant.<br />
Some days are very hectic, depend<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

opportunity to learn. Other days <strong>in</strong>volve<br />
teleconferences, audits, phone calls with<br />
sales eng<strong>in</strong>eers, new projects – the list<br />
goes on. I f<strong>in</strong>ish work at 5pm. I am<br />
happy that I have completed an<br />
important claim today but I know<br />
that no sooner has one important<br />
claim f<strong>in</strong>ished than a new one<br />
arrives <strong>in</strong> the door.<br />

Work<strong>in</strong>g as a consult<strong>in</strong>g forensic physicist much <strong>of</strong> my time is spent between the lab and the courts, giv<strong>in</strong>g expert<br />
testimony with a well balanced practice <strong>of</strong> defence and pla<strong>in</strong>tiff work.<br />
8.00am. – Meet at a quarry. Exam<strong>in</strong>e exploded excavator battery which caused serious <strong>in</strong>juries to the operator.<br />
Dispute on liability between mach<strong>in</strong>e operator, quarry operators, excavator manufacturers, excavator ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ers<br />
and battery manufacturers. Debate about hydrogen build-up, ventilation, gas seal<strong>in</strong>g, use <strong>of</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g tools,<br />
previous attempted repairs and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Photograph and measure anyth<strong>in</strong>g potentially relevant. Remove battery<br />
and hold for laboratory exam<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
10:00am. – Attend High Court consultation on eye <strong>in</strong>jury accident from fly<strong>in</strong>g staple on a factory production l<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
Dispute about whether the <strong>in</strong>jured party was wear<strong>in</strong>g his safety spectacles. A trajectory from the staple gun to the<br />
eye appears impossible with the glasses on. Could it have tumbled or deflected? My tests say no l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> sight, too<br />
much aerodynamic drag and too little momentum for <strong>in</strong>jurious bounce or deflection. Injured party was not wear<strong>in</strong>g<br />
his glasses. Trial goes on. Pla<strong>in</strong>tiff reviews situation. Case settles for fraction <strong>of</strong> its value. <strong>Physics</strong> w<strong>in</strong>s!<br />
11:30am. – Meet Counsel <strong>in</strong> a road traffic accident. Report already submitted and exchanged<br />
with defendants. No agreement.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Games Developer<br />
Work<strong>in</strong>g as a producer with IO Interactive, creator <strong>of</strong> such computer games as Hitman and Kane & Lynch: Dead<br />
Men br<strong>in</strong>gs me <strong>in</strong>to contact with all the varied aspects <strong>of</strong> the company from programm<strong>in</strong>g, art and animation to<br />
PR, brand and market<strong>in</strong>g and, best <strong>of</strong> all, play<strong>in</strong>g. Game development always seems to be <strong>in</strong> a state <strong>of</strong> flux and I<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d that the analytical and problem solv<strong>in</strong>g skills provided by my background <strong>in</strong> experimental physics helps me<br />
control this cont<strong>in</strong>ually chang<strong>in</strong>g environment.<br />
9:30 – Start the day by collect<strong>in</strong>g some c<strong>of</strong>fee and a croissant from the canteen on my way <strong>in</strong>to to a meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with our outsourc<strong>in</strong>g manager. We are plann<strong>in</strong>g on produc<strong>in</strong>g seventy percent <strong>of</strong> our graphic assets for this new<br />
game <strong>in</strong> Shanghai. Luckily our company’s l<strong>in</strong>e art director <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a was the art director on Kane & Lynch –<br />
a game we f<strong>in</strong>ished last year so I know him well.<br />
10:45 – Straight from the last meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to another one – this time about staff<strong>in</strong>g. We have 4 projects runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
here at IO all at various stages <strong>of</strong> production and a limited number <strong>of</strong> elite staff. This translates<br />
<strong>in</strong>to 4 producers fight<strong>in</strong>g tooth and nail for the best people. My team is at a very early<br />
stage <strong>in</strong> production and we have 3 <strong>of</strong> the best people <strong>in</strong> the company on a team <strong>of</strong> 6,<br />
so no stress at this meet<strong>in</strong>g for me.<br />
11:30 – F<strong>in</strong>ally get up to my team – th<strong>in</strong>gs seem to be go<strong>in</strong>g great – the feature<br />
set for our next company demo is nearly complete and our art direction is<br />

11:45 – Time to deal with mail. <strong>The</strong>re are lots <strong>of</strong> externals that need<br />
look<strong>in</strong>g after as that’s my job too – deal<strong>in</strong>g with brand, market<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

12:00 – On the way up to lunch I notice people crowd<strong>in</strong>g round<br />
the many 50” screens scattered through the build<strong>in</strong>g – I had<br />
forgotten that the latest version <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the most popular<br />
games <strong>of</strong> all time has been released today – well that puts<br />
paid to any real work gett<strong>in</strong>g done today.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Geophysicist<br />
Today’s a day for data acquisition. I will be collect<strong>in</strong>g broadband magnetotelluric data throughout Botswana.<br />
7am, the team <strong>of</strong> 12 meets for breakfast to discuss the plan <strong>of</strong> action. Decide to split <strong>in</strong>to 3 groups, each group pull<strong>in</strong>g<br />
one record<strong>in</strong>g unit out <strong>of</strong> the ground and putt<strong>in</strong>g a new one <strong>in</strong> further down the l<strong>in</strong>e. After pack<strong>in</strong>g up the landcruiser<br />
with all the necessary equipment and fuell<strong>in</strong>g up, my group <strong>of</strong> 4 hits the road. When we get to our first site, the first<br />
th<strong>in</strong>g I do is ensure that the unit is still record<strong>in</strong>g and that the site has not been disturbed. <strong>The</strong>re is a lot <strong>of</strong> local wildlife<br />
that enjoys chew<strong>in</strong>g on wires nos<strong>in</strong>g around the <strong>in</strong>struments! If all is well, I download the data and have a quick look at<br />
the time series to be sure that the equipment was work<strong>in</strong>g correctly before remov<strong>in</strong>g the equipment.<br />
Magnetotellurics (MT) is a method that provides <strong>in</strong>formation on the electrical conductivity <strong>of</strong> the Earth by measur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the natural time-vary<strong>in</strong>g electric and magnetic fields at its surface. <strong>The</strong>se fields are generated from electric currents<br />
that are produced from natural variations <strong>in</strong> the Earth’s magnetic field. <strong>The</strong> project <strong>in</strong> Botswana is part <strong>of</strong> a larger<br />
effort to understand the conductivity structure <strong>of</strong> the deep crust and upper mantle beneath Southern Africa. This<br />
<strong>in</strong>volves putt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> stations every 20 km along a pr<strong>of</strong>ile, or highway, and allow<strong>in</strong>g them to record<br />
for 3 days with the hope <strong>of</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation from depths <strong>of</strong> 150 – 200 km. Today we are<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g on the pr<strong>of</strong>ile between Francistown and Kasane.<br />
Sett<strong>in</strong>g up a new site is not quite as easy. After driv<strong>in</strong>g over 60 km down the highway<br />
to the next location, we drive around the area to f<strong>in</strong>d someone who works locally<br />
on the land. Good th<strong>in</strong>g we have a local Setswana speaker with us, the farmer<br />
is able to f<strong>in</strong>d us a great spot under a large shady mopane tree where we<br />
can keep the record<strong>in</strong>g box out <strong>of</strong> the sun. Install<strong>in</strong>g the site takes about<br />
2.5 hours, and most <strong>of</strong> that time is spent digg<strong>in</strong>g holes for each <strong>of</strong> the<br />
sensors. I then attach all the sensors to the record<strong>in</strong>g box and set it to<br />
record data for the next 3 days.<br />
On return to the lodge, there are a few chores to be done. <strong>The</strong><br />
batteries that power the <strong>in</strong>struments need to be charged, the<br />
trucks tidied, equipment problems need to be tested and<br />
fixed, and accommodation needs to be booked for the<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g night. If we are go<strong>in</strong>g to be camp<strong>in</strong>g we will need<br />
to do some grocery shopp<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

After a quick clean up, I then sit at the computer and<br />
back up the data from the three sites collected that<br />
day. <strong>The</strong> data is quickly processed giv<strong>in</strong>g us an<br />
<strong>in</strong>dication <strong>of</strong> any changes to the site <strong>in</strong>stallation<br />
that are necessary the follow<strong>in</strong>g day. If I have<br />
time, I will run more complex process<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
edit the response curves so that each site will<br />
be ready for 2-dimensional modell<strong>in</strong>g when<br />
we return to Dubl<strong>in</strong>. But for today, I will<br />
enjoy the fantastic African sunset before<br />
the group meets aga<strong>in</strong> to discuss the<br />
day’s events, and plan for tomorrow.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> an Imag<strong>in</strong>g Process<strong>in</strong>g Researcher<br />
As an imag<strong>in</strong>g process<strong>in</strong>g researcher, I work with colleagues to uncover and develop excit<strong>in</strong>g new technology for<br />
digital still camera (DSC) image enhancement. Image enhancement technologies (such as red eye removal and face<br />
detection) are the bra<strong>in</strong> child <strong>of</strong> researchers and eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong>. <strong>The</strong>se and other <strong>in</strong>novative s<strong>of</strong>tware solutions<br />
can be found <strong>in</strong> an estimated 80 million digital cameras worldwide. Tessera, the company beh<strong>in</strong>d this <strong>in</strong>novation<br />
through its FotoNation technology, has headquarters <strong>in</strong> the USA and a significant R&D <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong> <strong>in</strong> Galway.<br />
<strong>The</strong> world <strong>of</strong> digital cameras is rapidly evolv<strong>in</strong>g as expectations and the use <strong>of</strong> images change. With the<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>of</strong> cameras <strong>in</strong> mobile phones, the type, and the very way, images are be<strong>in</strong>g taken is shift<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Manufacturers <strong>in</strong> the highly competitive digital camera market face cont<strong>in</strong>uous pressure to reduce the cost <strong>of</strong><br />
cameras without compromis<strong>in</strong>g the quality <strong>of</strong> the images. This is where my colleagues and I come <strong>in</strong>. It is<br />
apparent that, traditionally, the dom<strong>in</strong>ant factor <strong>in</strong> determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g image quality is the optics, that is, if you want<br />
a good image use good optics. However, size constra<strong>in</strong>ts and the ever-decreas<strong>in</strong>g footpr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>g devices<br />
are compromis<strong>in</strong>g the quality <strong>of</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>g lenses. We recognise that, at a certa<strong>in</strong> level, imag<strong>in</strong>g imperfections that<br />
were traditionally met with a correction at the optical source, can now be corrected or compensated<br />
<strong>in</strong> the digital doma<strong>in</strong> - <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g a smart solution which unburdens the optical designer. <strong>The</strong>se<br />
solutions also are designed to not only correct imperfections, but to enhance the imag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
capabilities <strong>of</strong> the camera modules.<br />
On an average day I beg<strong>in</strong> by check<strong>in</strong>g my emails, deal with current bus<strong>in</strong>ess and<br />
then sift through any email alerts from the ma<strong>in</strong> optics journals. This helps me<br />
keep abreast <strong>of</strong> new optical research f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs. At some po<strong>in</strong>t dur<strong>in</strong>g the day I<br />
consult with my colleagues on recent progress or to discuss new strategies<br />
for techniques which may lead to a unique and worthwhile solution. I say<br />
unique because <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong>tellectual property is protected and we all<br />
have to be sure that any correction solution does not <strong>in</strong>fr<strong>in</strong>ge on the<br />
work <strong>of</strong> others, and that it can itself be protected. I work closely on<br />
projects with one colleague <strong>in</strong> particular for which we have regular<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>gs and discussions with the research manager. This is<br />

I am periodically assigned a new project. It could be an<br />
entirely new area <strong>of</strong> research seek<strong>in</strong>g to overcome an<br />
imag<strong>in</strong>g problem or it might overlap a previous project<br />
that needs <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> a new solution. Evolv<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
chang<strong>in</strong>g projects ensures that research is kept fresh<br />
and current. In fact this keeps it more that current,<br />
because, after all, research <strong>in</strong> this field determ<strong>in</strong>es<br />
and creates the technology <strong>of</strong> the future... whatever<br />
it may be.<br />

Jersey <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Technology (NJIT), New Jersey tak<strong>in</strong>g graduate courses, and<br />
spent 6 months <strong>in</strong> Sunspot, New Mexico, at the National Solar Observatory<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Laser Physicist<br />
I work as a Senior Laser Eng<strong>in</strong>eer <strong>in</strong> a company that designs and builds laser mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g tools.<br />
9.00am – My typical day starts with a project plann<strong>in</strong>g meet<strong>in</strong>g to ensure that my team and I are clear on what we<br />
need to do for the day. We discuss problems or issues encountered <strong>in</strong> the previous day and talk about the work<br />
plan for the current day.<br />
My job is to <strong>in</strong>vestigate new laser processes for our exist<strong>in</strong>g and potential customers. This <strong>in</strong>volves determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
what type <strong>of</strong> laser, and laser conditions, to use on different types <strong>of</strong> customer wafers. Our customers typically<br />
manufacture computer chips and memory devices. Amongst other work we mach<strong>in</strong>e small features such as holes,<br />
trenches and slots on such device wafers.<br />
10.00am, the eng<strong>in</strong>eers work<strong>in</strong>g for me start process<strong>in</strong>g work <strong>in</strong> the lab. It <strong>in</strong>volves a series <strong>of</strong> experimental tests<br />
to determ<strong>in</strong>e the optimum laser conditions for mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a particular customer sample. We change parameters<br />
such as laser beam size, laser focus, laser repetition frequency, laser wavelength and laser pulse<br />
energy <strong>in</strong> order to determ<strong>in</strong>e the optimum mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g conditions. After mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g we conduct<br />
tests us<strong>in</strong>g an optical microscope <strong>in</strong> order to assess the quality <strong>of</strong> the laser mach<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
features.<br />
Throughout the day I pop <strong>in</strong> and out <strong>of</strong> the lab to see how th<strong>in</strong>gs are go<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
discuss progress and analyse samples that have been mach<strong>in</strong>ed. Once we<br />
have decided on a suitable process I will write a report for our customer<br />
that details our experimental results and provides a detailed analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
the features we have mach<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />
Other aspects <strong>of</strong> my job <strong>in</strong>clude visit<strong>in</strong>g customers to see how their<br />
laser tool is perform<strong>in</strong>g and assist <strong>in</strong> their process development work<br />
on-site if required. This <strong>in</strong>volves travell<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> Europe, the US and<br />
Asia for a short visit, or sometimes several weeks, depend<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
the customer requirements.<br />
A few times a year I visit laser vendors to perform sample<br />
test<strong>in</strong>g with some <strong>of</strong> their new prototype systems<br />
to assess if we can expand our customer base by<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g a new laser with different performance<br />
characteristics onto a new version <strong>of</strong> our mach<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

their conditions or if we need to alter our<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Low Yield Analyst<br />
My work as a Low Yield Analysis Eng<strong>in</strong>eer is based at the Intel FAB 24 site <strong>in</strong> Leixlip, Co. Kildare. <strong>The</strong> company is the<br />
lead<strong>in</strong>g semiconductor manufacturer and produces microprocessors and chip sets used <strong>in</strong> desktops, laptops, servers,<br />
home enterta<strong>in</strong>ment systems, mobile phones, digital cameras and mp3 players. Microprocessors, referred to as ‘die’, are<br />
manufactured on circular silicon wafers and are transported to each manufactur<strong>in</strong>g step <strong>in</strong> groups <strong>of</strong> 25, known as a ‘lot’.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Low Yield Analysis group (LYA) is one <strong>of</strong> six sub-groups with<strong>in</strong> the Yield Department. LYA eng<strong>in</strong>eers and<br />
technicians operate as ’forensic’ scientists <strong>in</strong> the plant, <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g why and how the yield on any ‘lot’ is below target.<br />
My day starts at 8am with ergonomic stretch<strong>in</strong>g exercises with others from the Yield department <strong>in</strong> Intel. At 8.15am<br />
<strong>The</strong> LYA eng<strong>in</strong>eers meet the Failure Analysis (FA) technicians for task up-dates.<br />
All wafers undergo a series <strong>of</strong> electrical tests and are categorised accord<strong>in</strong>g to their failure mode. My job <strong>in</strong>volves<br />
analys<strong>in</strong>g the pass/fail trends <strong>in</strong> this data (called sort data) along with other parameters and statistics to ascerta<strong>in</strong> if<br />
and why someth<strong>in</strong>g went wrong <strong>in</strong> the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g process flow. <strong>The</strong> job also <strong>in</strong>volves exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g lots that are held<br />
at end-<strong>of</strong>-l<strong>in</strong>e, due to any variation <strong>in</strong> standard process<strong>in</strong>g. Such lots cannot be released until reviewed<br />
by LYA. Another aspect <strong>of</strong> our work <strong>in</strong>volves split lot analysis whereby some <strong>of</strong> a lot purposely<br />
receive non-standard process<strong>in</strong>g – experiments carried out <strong>in</strong> a bid to qualify the <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />
<strong>of</strong> a modified process step with a view to improv<strong>in</strong>g yield trends.<br />
11am – our group meet for a daily huddle (or cuddle as it is <strong>of</strong>ten referred to!). Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
this time we categorise all lots that have reached end-<strong>of</strong>-l<strong>in</strong>e and delegate work<br />
appropriately.<br />
12 noon – lunch time: today we have a lunch time party to celebrate a key<br />
milestone on Intel’s new factory FAB 24-2 road map – we have a m<strong>in</strong>i-<br />
Olympic games. <strong>The</strong> music is blar<strong>in</strong>g, popcorn and candy floss are<br />
flow<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
1pm – <strong>The</strong> yield department meet<strong>in</strong>g with all Group Leaders present.<br />
I am present<strong>in</strong>g on behalf <strong>of</strong> LYA today and am sort <strong>of</strong> nervous as<br />
I am still relatively new to this job. <strong>The</strong> yield model needs to be<br />
run before the meet<strong>in</strong>g – hope it matches or runs close to the<br />
actual yield. If not there will be some expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to be done.<br />
<strong>The</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g goes accord<strong>in</strong>g to plan. I also have to make<br />
this presentation at our ‘virtual factory’ meet<strong>in</strong>g (phone<br />
conference) this even<strong>in</strong>g with our colleagues <strong>in</strong> Portland,<br />
Oregon and New Mexico.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re are thousands <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>structor-taught and<br />
web-based tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses at Intel. I schedule<br />
myself for at least one course a week – this week<br />
I will complete a course on effective meet<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
In addition to my eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g chores I<br />
also take part <strong>in</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> community<br />
projects such as teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternet skills to<br />
students with learn<strong>in</strong>g disabilities, and<br />
<strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g science and<br />
technology <strong>in</strong> schools.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Mathematical Modeller<br />
For me there is no such th<strong>in</strong>g as a typical work<strong>in</strong>g day; no two <strong>in</strong>dustrial mathematics problems are the same, but<br />
one th<strong>in</strong>g is common – they always <strong>in</strong>clude maths and physics <strong>in</strong> one way or another.<br />
I walk to work, ra<strong>in</strong> or sh<strong>in</strong>e, wellies or sandals, it is a good start to the day for a non-morn<strong>in</strong>g person! I usually<br />
arrive at the University <strong>of</strong> Limerick around half n<strong>in</strong>e, and beg<strong>in</strong> the day by reply<strong>in</strong>g to any press<strong>in</strong>g emails, and<br />
check<strong>in</strong>g the results <strong>of</strong> any simulations that I have left runn<strong>in</strong>g overnight.<br />
In 2008 I completed my PhD <strong>in</strong> the mathematical modell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> noise and vibration problems <strong>in</strong> geared systems,<br />
such as car gearboxes, w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es, and vacuum pumps. Currently I am apply<strong>in</strong>g similar techniques to cam-shaft<br />
follower systems found <strong>in</strong> car eng<strong>in</strong>es, and magnetic bear<strong>in</strong>gs used <strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>etic energy storage release.<br />
I usually spend my morn<strong>in</strong>gs analys<strong>in</strong>g any new results, look<strong>in</strong>g up and read<strong>in</strong>g relevant papers, and sometimes<br />
mak<strong>in</strong>g a phone call to my collaborator <strong>in</strong> the National University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong> Galway if I f<strong>in</strong>d someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
discuss. This morn<strong>in</strong>g, with the help <strong>of</strong> Google Translate, I am read<strong>in</strong>g a German MSc thesis on the dynamics <strong>of</strong> a<br />
cathedral bell that won’t r<strong>in</strong>g reliably. I make notes as I read, and highlight the key equations.<br />
After an essential c<strong>of</strong>fee around 11, I meet an <strong>in</strong>ternship student whom I have been supervis<strong>in</strong>g this summer. She<br />
has to give a presentation on her project later this week, on the dynamics <strong>of</strong> the double pendulum, and she is<br />
understandably a bit nervous. I listen and comment on a couple <strong>of</strong> practice runs, until she feels more<br />
confident.<br />
Lunchtime arrives quickly, and it’s time to get some fresh air. At least a couple <strong>of</strong> times a<br />
week and weather permitt<strong>in</strong>g, I try to go for a walk or a run along the tow path next to<br />
the river Shannon. It’s a good way to catch up with friends, and make the most <strong>of</strong><br />
work<strong>in</strong>g at such a beautiful campus.<br />
Back at my desk I write a couple <strong>of</strong> emails to check that the volunteer team I am<br />
lead<strong>in</strong>g are up to date with the <strong>in</strong>teractive physics tricks we’ll be perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />
at this year’s Taste Northern <strong>Ireland</strong> festival <strong>in</strong> Belfast next month. Outreach<br />
activities are a way <strong>in</strong> which I can share my passion for my subject, and try<br />
to enthuse others about science. I should really dedicate some time to<br />
start plann<strong>in</strong>g some activities for Maths week <strong>in</strong> October...<br />
Often my day <strong>in</strong>volves prepar<strong>in</strong>g for teach<strong>in</strong>g undergraduate tutorials,<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g is a constant challenge and helps keep me on my toes!<br />
This year I have taught first-year calculus, third-year eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
maths, and fourth-year mathematical modell<strong>in</strong>g, with sizes <strong>of</strong><br />
tutorial groups rang<strong>in</strong>g from 3 to 40. <strong>The</strong> students are still on<br />
summer holiday, so today I can postpone any preparation until<br />
the start <strong>of</strong> the semester <strong>in</strong> a few weeks’ time.<br />
4pm, time now for the weekly sem<strong>in</strong>ar run by my research<br />
group, the Mathematics Applications Consortium for<br />
Science and Industry (MACSI), who were established <strong>in</strong><br />
2006 to act as a mathematical modell<strong>in</strong>g consultancy to<br />
Irish companies. Today’s problem <strong>in</strong>volves <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
cheaper alternatives to a widget <strong>in</strong> a can <strong>of</strong> Gu<strong>in</strong>ness.<br />
Previous problems have ranged from resolv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
discrepancies <strong>in</strong> measurements <strong>of</strong> milk before<br />
and after transportation from farm to dairy, to<br />
discover<strong>in</strong>g the causes <strong>of</strong> defects <strong>in</strong> contact<br />
lenses. In each case, a mathematical modell<strong>in</strong>g<br />
approach is used to capture the essential<br />
phenomena <strong>in</strong> the simplest possible way, and<br />
to provide practical solutions to <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
By 6:30 I’m ready to leave the <strong>of</strong>fice. At<br />
least one even<strong>in</strong>g a week I go <strong>in</strong>to town to<br />
use the pottery studio that I share with<br />

and non-functional sculptures a<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Medical Physicist<br />
It’s only 8:00am but <strong>in</strong> one hour patients will be arriv<strong>in</strong>g for their Nuclear Medic<strong>in</strong>e scans, so need to get those<br />
<strong>in</strong>jections prepared. This is my first task <strong>of</strong> the day, comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g pharmaceuticals with radioactive tracers to make<br />
up all the different patient <strong>in</strong>jections.<br />
When <strong>in</strong>jected, this radiopharmaceutical will travel to certa<strong>in</strong> parts <strong>of</strong> the patients’ anatomy. <strong>The</strong>n we can use a<br />
Gamma Camera to image that part <strong>of</strong> the anatomy. <strong>The</strong> images are used for diagnostic <strong>in</strong>formation and to help<br />
make cl<strong>in</strong>ical decisions.<br />
I work at a specially designed cab<strong>in</strong>et <strong>in</strong> the Radiopharmacy. <strong>The</strong> cab<strong>in</strong>et is shielded with lead, which will<br />
attenuate almost all the radiation that I’m work<strong>in</strong>g with. I have to manipulate vials and syr<strong>in</strong>ges <strong>of</strong> radioactive<br />
material but it is all conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> lead pots and lead syr<strong>in</strong>ge shields so I am very well protected from the<br />
radiation. Some <strong>of</strong> the radioactive material needed for today’s cl<strong>in</strong>ic comes ready-prepared <strong>in</strong> capsules from the<br />
manufacturer, <strong>in</strong> which case I don’t have to prepare the <strong>in</strong>jection. Instead, I measure the activity <strong>of</strong><br />
each capsule <strong>in</strong> a dose calibrator and make sure it is the correct dose for the patient. I know<br />
it has decayed s<strong>in</strong>ce the manufacturer measured it, so I calculate the expected activity<br />
and this matches well to what I measured <strong>in</strong> the dose calibrator, so I’m happy with<br />
my results.<br />
I’m f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>in</strong> time for a 9.30am meet<strong>in</strong>g with a consultant dermatologist to<br />
review our progress on a research project we’re undertak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Ultraviolet<br />
Phototherapy. UV radiation is used very successfully <strong>in</strong> hospitals to treat<br />
sk<strong>in</strong> conditions, but the dose has to be very carefully controlled. We<br />
are <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g the different methods for test<strong>in</strong>g the patients’ sk<strong>in</strong><br />
before treatment starts – there’s always room for improvement<br />
and new devices com<strong>in</strong>g on the market all the time. <strong>The</strong> project<br />
is progress<strong>in</strong>g well so we decide to submit our results for<br />
presentation at an upcom<strong>in</strong>g scientific conference…. it will be<br />
good to share the results from our study and hopefully get<br />
some feedback from other physicists.<br />
After lunch, it’s over to the university part <strong>of</strong> the<br />
hospital to give a lecture to a group <strong>of</strong> doctors and<br />
nurses about laser safety and the hazards they<br />
might encounter <strong>in</strong> the course <strong>of</strong> their work. <strong>The</strong><br />
group is full <strong>of</strong> questions and we have a good<br />
discussion afterwards about their practical<br />
experiences with lasers. I drop <strong>in</strong>to the library<br />
after the lecture to download a new report<br />
on X-ray image quality as I’m test<strong>in</strong>g a new<br />
digital X-ray room next week - no more<br />
films! Will have a read <strong>of</strong> it for any new<br />
recommendations, but I’ll have to<br />
leave that task until tomorrow.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Meteorologist<br />
My night duty as weather forecaster <strong>in</strong> Met Éireann’s forecast <strong>of</strong>fice beg<strong>in</strong>s at 10pm. On arrival <strong>in</strong> the forecast <strong>of</strong>fice<br />
I am briefed by the even<strong>in</strong>g duty meteorologist. <strong>The</strong>y will give a run down <strong>of</strong> the current weather situation and walk<br />
me through the forecast for the next week or so, highlight<strong>in</strong>g any severe weather expected.<br />
Once the even<strong>in</strong>g forecaster departs I have a few busy hours ahead <strong>of</strong> me. I must prepare for the live radio<br />
broadcast scheduled just before midnight. I will need to analyse the forecast charts produced by computer<br />
forecast<strong>in</strong>g models. <strong>The</strong>se computer models predict atmospheric conditions like air pressure, temperature and<br />
precipitation. It is my job to assess this <strong>in</strong>formation and convert it <strong>in</strong>to a format that can be easily used by our<br />
customers, the public.<br />
Us<strong>in</strong>g the new model data and tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to account the current weather conditions I will update Met Éireann’s<br />
national forecast, a concise text describ<strong>in</strong>g the weather for <strong>Ireland</strong> for the next 24 to 36 hours. This national<br />
forecast is posted on our web page (www.met.ie) and on RTÉ teletext. At 11pm a second forecaster comes on<br />
duty for the night I take some time to brief him fully.<br />
My next task is to prepare a sea area forecast for the waters around <strong>Ireland</strong> focus<strong>in</strong>g on the<br />
w<strong>in</strong>ds at sea over the com<strong>in</strong>g 24 hours. Also, before midnight I need to prepare a radio<br />
script cover<strong>in</strong>g the expected weather over the next few days. Just before midnight I go<br />
<strong>in</strong>to our small radio studio, just beside the forecast <strong>of</strong>fice. I phone up the sound desk<br />
<strong>in</strong> RTÉ Radio 1 and we do a sound level test. Shortly after I will go out live on air<br />
broadcast<strong>in</strong>g the 1 m<strong>in</strong>ute general forecast script and the sea area forecast.<br />
Between midnight and 3am the forecast <strong>of</strong>fice is rather quiet. I need<br />
to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to analyse the weather, each hour we get reports <strong>in</strong> from<br />
Met Éireann’s stations about the country. I need to ensure that the<br />
forecast is on track and make any amendments if necessary.<br />
At 3am th<strong>in</strong>gs get busy aga<strong>in</strong> and stay that way until my duty<br />
ends at 8.15am. New output from computer models will<br />
become available. Both forecasters on duty will analyse<br />
this data and will f<strong>in</strong>alise the forecast for the day ahead<br />
as well as the outlook for the com<strong>in</strong>g week. I will focus<br />
on the next 24 to 36 hours and if any severe weather is<br />
expected I will issue warn<strong>in</strong>gs. My colleague on night<br />
duty will concentrate on the longer range forecast<br />
and will write and record the forecasts used on our<br />
Weatherdial service. I will update Met Éireann’s<br />
national forecast and produce an updated sea<br />
area forecast which I then broadcast just after<br />
6am on RTÉ Radio 1.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Nanotechnology Researcher<br />
8.45am – a rushed start this morn<strong>in</strong>g with a 9.00am lecture followed by a teach<strong>in</strong>g lab session at Dubl<strong>in</strong> City<br />
University.<br />
My job description is a university physics lecturer. However, I am <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> an active research group <strong>in</strong> study<strong>in</strong>g<br />
nanostructured semiconductors. Certa<strong>in</strong>ly that is a mouthful, and not a good th<strong>in</strong>g to try to rhyme <strong>of</strong>f the cuff on<br />
Monday morn<strong>in</strong>g! Nanostructures are materials systems, which have structured features on the scale <strong>of</strong> 100nm or<br />
less (less than 1000 times the width <strong>of</strong> a human hair!).<br />
After lunch I meet with my research group (one postgraduate student and one postdoctoral fellow). At present<br />
we are try<strong>in</strong>g to understand how we can tailor the structure <strong>of</strong> z<strong>in</strong>c oxide nanorods so that we get nanorods<br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g on top <strong>of</strong> a network <strong>of</strong> nanowalls, as shown <strong>in</strong> the left hand panel <strong>of</strong> the figure below, rather than simply<br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g as separate little pillars (shown <strong>in</strong> right hand panel). <strong>The</strong> width <strong>of</strong> these little pillars is less than 100nm.<br />
<strong>The</strong> problem is; none <strong>of</strong> us know how to do it so that it works every time. We discuss the possible options, what<br />
might be go<strong>in</strong>g on and how we can control it. Actually this is the key to our research, try<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
develop control <strong>of</strong> the growth processes so that we are confident <strong>in</strong> our methods. We need<br />
to understand the physics, some chemistry and some eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g to do this: we are at<br />
the <strong>in</strong>terface <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
Z<strong>in</strong>c oxide (yes, the stuff <strong>in</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> creams) has great potential for use <strong>in</strong> next<br />
generation UV and white light sources for data storage, energy efficient<br />
light<strong>in</strong>g and displays. Nanostructures based on z<strong>in</strong>c oxide may produce<br />
exceptionally efficient device structures. Hence the large mouthful used<br />
earlier <strong>in</strong> describ<strong>in</strong>g my research work.<br />
By 4.00pm I’m ready to have a cup <strong>of</strong> c<strong>of</strong>fee and a chat with<br />
my friend and colleague, Paul van Kampen, whose research is<br />
concerned with the best ways to teach physics. We talk about<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g, physics, research grants, families and football and<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> between. Paul <strong>of</strong>ten has useful <strong>in</strong>sights about<br />
my work, and occasionally I can repay the favour.<br />
At the end <strong>of</strong> the day, when th<strong>in</strong>gs have quietened down<br />
I will do the usual th<strong>in</strong>gs, answer<strong>in</strong>g emails, clear<strong>in</strong>g<br />
forms on my desk, try<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>ish <strong>of</strong>f writ<strong>in</strong>g a research<br />
paper for a journal on some previous results from our<br />
lab, and prepare for the next day’s challenges!<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> an Onboard Geophysicist<br />
11pm – time to get up and make the short commute from my cab<strong>in</strong> to the <strong>in</strong>strument room on a seismic research<br />
vessel operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the North Sea. I am work<strong>in</strong>g the night shift as an onboard geophysicist for a mar<strong>in</strong>e geophysical<br />
data acquisition company. <strong>The</strong> data we acquire is used by our client oil & gas companies <strong>in</strong> their exploration for<br />
hydrocarbons deep with<strong>in</strong> the earth’s crust.<br />
A seismic survey is a 24/7 operation therefore we spend an extended period (typically 4-5 weeks at a time) <strong>in</strong> the<br />
field both liv<strong>in</strong>g and work<strong>in</strong>g aboard the vessel. With around 15 different nationalities onboard it certa<strong>in</strong>ly makes for<br />
an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g work environment!<br />
<strong>The</strong>re are only four geophysicists onboard so two <strong>of</strong> us are reliev<strong>in</strong>g the guys who have been on-duty for the<br />
previous 12 hours. Hand-over takes place and we discuss the previous and upcom<strong>in</strong>g shifts. Tonight operations are<br />
shut down due to rough seas we’ve be<strong>in</strong>g hav<strong>in</strong>g over the last few days. With terabytes <strong>of</strong> raw data be<strong>in</strong>g acquired<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g the survey we have plenty <strong>of</strong> keep us occupied though!<br />
<strong>The</strong> technique used to get our data is called “reflection seismology”. We specialise <strong>in</strong> a type <strong>of</strong> seismic<br />
called OBC (Ocean Bottom Cable). Sound energy is sent <strong>in</strong>to the earth where it undergoes a<br />
complex series <strong>of</strong> reflections through the various rock layers compris<strong>in</strong>g the earth’s crust.<br />
Sensors embedded <strong>in</strong> arrays <strong>of</strong> cables stretch<strong>in</strong>g several kilometres along the sea-floor<br />
detect and measure this reflected energy as it returns to the earth’s surface. <strong>The</strong> data<br />
we acquire will be used to build a detailed 3D image <strong>of</strong> the subsurface which will<br />
aid <strong>in</strong> the recovery <strong>of</strong> oil or gas from the targeted reservoir.<br />
Tonight I’m spend<strong>in</strong>g most <strong>of</strong> my shift analys<strong>in</strong>g data quality. Among other<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs this <strong>in</strong>volves check<strong>in</strong>g for irregularities due to issues such as faulty<br />
equipment or seismic <strong>in</strong>terference (i.e. noise). Highly significant issues<br />
may require data to be reacquired so it’s important that those found are<br />
thoroughly <strong>in</strong>vestigated and detailed records are kept.<br />
Breakfast at 05:30 means it’s time for a break and a chance to<br />
watch the sun rise over the north sea....then it’s back to work.<br />
We can use the seismic data to supply us with some valuable<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation, for example we determ<strong>in</strong>e the positions <strong>of</strong> the<br />
sensors on the seafloor to an accuracy <strong>of</strong> about +/- 1m...no<br />
mean feat consider<strong>in</strong>g they’re covered by 100m <strong>of</strong> sea! An<br />
analysis tool be<strong>in</strong>g set up will also use the data to help<br />
us determ<strong>in</strong>e a sound velocity model for the rock layers<br />
<strong>in</strong> the subsurface. It’s amaz<strong>in</strong>g what you can decipher<br />
from a few squiggles on a computer screen.<br />
Apart from analys<strong>in</strong>g data other tasks that need to<br />
be taken care <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, repair <strong>of</strong><br />
equipment and safety monitor<strong>in</strong>g. If someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
breaks out here you don’t have much option<br />
but to fix it yourself.<br />
Shift ends with hand-over at 11:45. After<br />
shift I usually unw<strong>in</strong>d by go<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />
gym, we have a 1.5 hour safety meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />
later though so maybe not today...the<br />
joys <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g the night shift!<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Particle Physicist<br />
12 o’clock – My day starts at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago. That’s 12 midnight, not noon!<br />
<strong>The</strong> proton and anti-proton beams <strong>of</strong> the Tevatron collider circulate 24 hours a day, smash<strong>in</strong>g together 10 million<br />
times a second. Each time they <strong>in</strong>teract, they produce a m<strong>in</strong>iature fireball, recreat<strong>in</strong>g conditions that last existed<br />
less than one billionth <strong>of</strong> a second after the Big Bang.<br />
Tonight I’m part <strong>of</strong> the team operat<strong>in</strong>g the ‘camera’ that photographs the explosions. Our ‘camera’ is a specialised<br />
detector that took 500 physicists ten years to build. About the size <strong>of</strong> a two-storey house, we can take pictures with a<br />
precision <strong>of</strong> one hundredth <strong>of</strong> a millimetre, allow<strong>in</strong>g us to obta<strong>in</strong> remarkable images <strong>of</strong> the decays <strong>of</strong> subatomic particles.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re are three <strong>of</strong> us <strong>in</strong> the control room tonight. One person co-ord<strong>in</strong>ates our activities, another is responsible<br />
for stor<strong>in</strong>g the data, while my job is to monitor detector conditions and data quality. In front <strong>of</strong> me are eight<br />
monitors, each display<strong>in</strong>g a series <strong>of</strong> plots which so far suggest everyth<strong>in</strong>g is proceed<strong>in</strong>g smoothly.<br />
Suddenly one <strong>of</strong> the screens flashes red – all is not well. Investigat<strong>in</strong>g further I discover that the voltages on one<br />
sub-detector have gone to zero. I follow the recovery <strong>in</strong>structions, but without success. After a brief discussion,<br />
we agree that to solve this we need expert <strong>in</strong>tervention. We make a phone-call to the relevant expert (about<br />
20 people are on-call 24 hours a day to solve specialist problems) and at 3:30am, a rather tired<br />
but oblig<strong>in</strong>g physicist arrives and after half an hour succeeds <strong>in</strong> fix<strong>in</strong>g it.<br />
<strong>The</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> the shift is uneventful. I complete my report and hand over to the next crew<br />
that arrive <strong>in</strong> at 8am. Time for me to get some sleep!<br />
At 3pm I come back to the laboratory for an important meet<strong>in</strong>g. In analys<strong>in</strong>g<br />
data taken over the last two years, one <strong>of</strong> the physicists th<strong>in</strong>ks they may have<br />
discovered a new particle that suggests that we all live <strong>in</strong> a super-symmetric<br />
world where each everyday particle like the proton and electron has a rare<br />
super-world partner. If correct, this could be a Nobel prize-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g discovery!<br />

Not unsurpris<strong>in</strong>gly, many people are sceptical <strong>of</strong> the claim so the<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g is quite lively. <strong>The</strong> proponent <strong>of</strong> the signal makes a detailed<br />
presentation. Immediately he is presented with a barrage <strong>of</strong><br />
questions: how well is the energy resolution known? How were the<br />
calibrations determ<strong>in</strong>ed? Can the precision quoted be justified?<br />
Like a skilled barrister <strong>in</strong> a courtroom he defends his position,<br />
but <strong>in</strong> our case, the f<strong>in</strong>al arbiter will be truth itself. For every<br />
claim or counter-claim, the data itself can be <strong>in</strong>terrogated for<br />
an answer.<br />

<strong>The</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ishes at 6pm without a firm conclusion<br />

decide the issue us<strong>in</strong>g rigorous scientific criteria.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Physics</strong> Lecturer<br />
First job <strong>of</strong> the day – ensure I am <strong>in</strong> the right place! I work both as a lecturer <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Physics</strong> Department at<br />
University College Cork and conduct research <strong>in</strong> the Photonics Centre at Tyndall National <strong>Institute</strong> - juggl<strong>in</strong>g two<br />
locations takes a lot <strong>of</strong> forward plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Most days, I concentrate on teach<strong>in</strong>g activities <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g and then head to Tyndall <strong>in</strong> the afternoon to meet<br />
with my team <strong>of</strong> researchers that makes up the Quantum Optics Group. This morn<strong>in</strong>g I am with a large group <strong>of</strong><br />
budd<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eers giv<strong>in</strong>g a lecture on mechanics.<br />
All our f<strong>in</strong>al year students conduct research projects as part <strong>of</strong> their degree programme. Today, after the lectures,<br />
I spend a couple <strong>of</strong> hours help<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g together compatible students, projects and supervisors. <strong>The</strong> match is<br />
important to make sure that the student has an enjoyable experience, learn<strong>in</strong>g new skills that he or she will use <strong>in</strong><br />
the workplace or if they choose to study for a higher degree such as an MSc or PhD.<br />
Once teach<strong>in</strong>g is over, I head to the research laboratory to see how th<strong>in</strong>gs are go<strong>in</strong>g there.<br />
<strong>The</strong> lab is a hive <strong>of</strong> activity with a number <strong>of</strong> experiments runn<strong>in</strong>g. In one experiment we have a really complex<br />
optical and vacuum setup where we cool rubidium atoms down to 50 microKelv<strong>in</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g a technique known as<br />
laser cool<strong>in</strong>g. This allows us to study the quantum nature <strong>of</strong> atoms - a very hot topic <strong>in</strong> physics as a<br />
quantum revolution is tak<strong>in</strong>g place. Tried and tested theories are now be<strong>in</strong>g used to realise a<br />
host <strong>of</strong> quantum-based technologies such as comput<strong>in</strong>g, sens<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>formation security.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re’s so much <strong>in</strong>strumentation be<strong>in</strong>g used for the laser-cool<strong>in</strong>g setup that it is quite<br />
daunt<strong>in</strong>g and a real challenge to master. We use a very expensive and delicate <strong>in</strong>frared<br />
laser system for this experiment: the laser beam consists <strong>of</strong> a stream <strong>of</strong> light<br />
particles known as photons. We sh<strong>in</strong>e the laser onto rubidium atoms and, on<br />
collision, each photon removes some energy from each atom. This slows each<br />
atom down, thereby reduc<strong>in</strong>g the average temperature <strong>of</strong> the atoms.<br />
In another experiment we explore novel types <strong>of</strong> laser systems, known<br />
as microlasers due to their size. <strong>The</strong> microlasers we use are about the<br />
size <strong>of</strong> a speck <strong>of</strong> dust and can <strong>of</strong>ten be confused with just that! When<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g, they emit bright green light because <strong>of</strong> the materials they<br />
are made <strong>of</strong> (glass doped with erbium ions). <strong>The</strong>se microlasers can<br />
be used for a lot <strong>of</strong> different purposes and need to be pumped<br />
optically <strong>in</strong> order to emit the green light. One excit<strong>in</strong>g use <strong>of</strong> these<br />
lasers is as m<strong>in</strong>iature mechanical systems for switch<strong>in</strong>g devices<br />
<strong>in</strong> optical circuits. To make the microlasers we sh<strong>in</strong>e light from<br />
a very powerful CO 2<br />
laser onto some glass powder to melt it<br />
– when the CO 2<br />
laser is on we have to be very careful s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
it could immediately burn a hole <strong>in</strong> human flesh or cause<br />
bl<strong>in</strong>dness.<br />
I need to organise a trip for myself and one <strong>of</strong> my<br />
research students to visit our collaborators <strong>in</strong> Germany<br />
and Austria next month. <strong>The</strong> research group meet to<br />
discuss who should travel and the benefits to the<br />
people <strong>in</strong>volved- there are usually more volunteers<br />
than places so this is a tough decision to make.<br />
At 4pm I’m <strong>of</strong>f to meet a visit<strong>in</strong>g US pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
who is giv<strong>in</strong>g a talk on “50 Years <strong>of</strong> the LASER”<br />
to celebrate the laser’s historic birthday s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
it first come <strong>in</strong>to operation <strong>in</strong> 1960. This is<br />
part <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ars for all the staff<br />
and students, which I organise, so I’m<br />
delighted to see a good turn out.<br />

e-mails to the researchers to make<br />
sure they know what to do. Another<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Physics</strong> Student<br />
Thursday is our longest day <strong>in</strong> college, but it’s also our most varied: a three-hour lab session, followed by three<br />
lectures. We kick <strong>of</strong>f at 10am, with General Labs. Today, my lab partner and I are measur<strong>in</strong>g the radioactive<br />
decay <strong>of</strong> the Barium-137 isotope <strong>in</strong> real-time – it takes about half an hour to decay fully, so we can measure it <strong>in</strong><br />
the lab, which is pretty remarkable. Our data fits an exponential decay curve nicely, so we’re very pleased.<br />
1pm: We have an hour for lunch. We eat <strong>in</strong> different places on campus every day but today we head to the<br />
restaurant. <strong>The</strong>re are ten or twelve <strong>of</strong> us, and we have a great time chatt<strong>in</strong>g about last night’s TV, funny stuff<br />
people came across on the Internet, and the <strong>Physics</strong> night out <strong>in</strong> town that’s planned for next week, among<br />
other th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
2pm: <strong>The</strong> first <strong>of</strong> our lectures is Quantum <strong>Physics</strong>. <strong>The</strong> course covers topics we’re familiar with from the Leav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Cert., like the Photoelectric Effect, and goes all the way through to concepts like Heisenberg’s Uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple and the Schröd<strong>in</strong>ger Wave Equation. It’s a very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and popular module.<br />
3pm: Maths. This semester, we’re study<strong>in</strong>g Calculus <strong>of</strong> Several Variables, which is<br />
basically differentiation <strong>in</strong> three dimensions. While the concepts are new, the actual<br />
calculus is pretty much Leav<strong>in</strong>g Cert. standard.<br />
4pm: Last lecture <strong>of</strong> the day, Relativity and Nuclear <strong>Physics</strong>. We’ve been<br />
look<strong>in</strong>g at E<strong>in</strong>ste<strong>in</strong>’s theory <strong>of</strong> Special Relativity; E=mc 2 , time dilation,<br />
length contraction, relativistic momentum and energy, the tw<strong>in</strong><br />
paradox… there are a lot <strong>of</strong> strange and fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g effects that occur<br />
at velocities close to the speed <strong>of</strong> light.<br />
5pm: Lectures are f<strong>in</strong>ished, but a student’s day is never<br />
complete without some hang<strong>in</strong>g around, so we go to Zero One,<br />
the café underneath the library. One <strong>of</strong> the nice th<strong>in</strong>gs about<br />
<strong>Physics</strong> is that it’s a niche subject, so the people who study<br />
it tend to have a lot <strong>in</strong> common. Because <strong>of</strong> this, the class<br />
get along really well, and we can talk, literally, for hours<br />
on end. After one <strong>of</strong> our exams last January, we sat<br />
down <strong>in</strong> Zero One at 11:30am, and didn’t leave till<br />
after 4:30pm!<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Physics</strong> Teacher<br />
Just because you have a timetable for the day doesn’t guarantee that all will go as planned. I’m <strong>in</strong> my lab early,<br />
<strong>in</strong>tent on gett<strong>in</strong>g a projectile experiment set up. However, pupils and colleagues drop by to say hello, another<br />
<strong>Physics</strong> teacher asks me about the best way to <strong>in</strong>troduce potential difference and before I know it, it’s time to<br />
register my tutor group. Achiev<strong>in</strong>g time dilation would certa<strong>in</strong>ly make my job easier! In my first class, Year 11<br />
pupils hand <strong>in</strong> their homework on “Waves and Sound”. Flick<strong>in</strong>g through their work, I stop – “Sarah, why do you<br />
have “Henry the Hoover” on your poster?” “That’s easy – it’s because sound can’t travel <strong>in</strong> a vacuum”. I smile<br />
to myself as adverts for revolutionary “silent” vacuum cleaners scroll through my m<strong>in</strong>d. I’m struck aga<strong>in</strong> by the<br />
conflict for pupils between everyday vocabulary and the language <strong>of</strong> science.<br />
“Hey miss – guess what?” Jemma announces as she explodes through the door after break. “When I was <strong>in</strong><br />
Tesco’s yesterday with my mum, she got a shock <strong>of</strong>f her trolley. I said to her, “We were learn<strong>in</strong>g about that <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Physics</strong>. It’s to do with friction and the electrons mov<strong>in</strong>g.” A volley <strong>of</strong> contributions from the class<br />
follows about their “static” experiences. Inwardly, I’m jump<strong>in</strong>g for joy – it’s encourag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to see pupils realis<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>Physics</strong> really is relevant. <strong>The</strong> Van de Graaf generator<br />
lesson today will provide a few shocks – none greater than the sight earlier <strong>of</strong> our<br />
technician brush<strong>in</strong>g Barbie’s hair to ensure a truly hair-rais<strong>in</strong>g experience.<br />
A-level classes are one <strong>of</strong> the highlights <strong>of</strong> my day. <strong>The</strong> teacher-pupil<br />
relationship is different from that with younger classes, and I feel more like<br />
a “facilitator” <strong>of</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g. I love be<strong>in</strong>g challenged by a brilliant question.<br />
It’s excit<strong>in</strong>g to look at the potential <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> me and<br />
I wonder where some <strong>of</strong> these <strong>in</strong>quisitive m<strong>in</strong>ds will end up. Today,<br />
Ben is question<strong>in</strong>g the viability <strong>of</strong> a float<strong>in</strong>g power station…<br />
It’s 4 o’clock, and we’re hav<strong>in</strong>g an impromptu staff “Look<br />
what I’ve discovered” session. That’s so important for us<br />
as teachers – reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g our sense <strong>of</strong> wonder and <strong>in</strong>quiry.<br />
Colleagues make a huge difference <strong>in</strong> that regard – people<br />
who are keen to keep learn<strong>in</strong>g and who really love their<br />
job. We’re all <strong>in</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the labs, play<strong>in</strong>g with horseshoe<br />
magnets and a signal generator, as we comb<strong>in</strong>e<br />
Flem<strong>in</strong>g’s left hand rule and stand<strong>in</strong>g waves theory<br />
to produce danc<strong>in</strong>g foil strips that can be strobed.<br />
I leave happy that day, look<strong>in</strong>g forward to<br />
show<strong>in</strong>g my Year 14 class our “new <strong>in</strong>vention”<br />
tomorrow. I just hope they are as excited<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Radiological Protection Officer<br />
Today it’s 9am when I arrive at my <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>in</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>ity College where I have been work<strong>in</strong>g on a part time basis for just<br />
over 13 years as the College Radiological Protection Officer (RPO). My chief role is to oversee the use <strong>of</strong> ionis<strong>in</strong>g<br />
radiation <strong>in</strong> the College and ensure that such work is undertaken <strong>in</strong> a safe manner. Just have time to check my<br />
emails before head<strong>in</strong>g to a meet<strong>in</strong>g regard<strong>in</strong>g plans for a new build<strong>in</strong>g which will conta<strong>in</strong> X-ray equipment and<br />
advise on compliance with regulatory requirements.<br />
11.00am: Time for a quick c<strong>of</strong>fee before head<strong>in</strong>g over to the Biochemistry School to monitor a batch <strong>of</strong> radioactive<br />
waste and sign clearance forms for disposal. One <strong>of</strong> the best parts <strong>of</strong> my work is that many staff and postgraduate<br />
students work with sources <strong>of</strong> ionis<strong>in</strong>g radiation so my work br<strong>in</strong>gs me <strong>in</strong>to contact with people right across the<br />
university <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> areas as diverse as medical equipment and pharmaceuticals to geological specimens such as<br />
radioactive ores.<br />
At 12.30pm I f<strong>in</strong>ish up at Biochemistry and make my way to the <strong>Physics</strong> School to oversee the <strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>of</strong> a new<br />
sealed radioactive Cobalt 57 source. I need to monitor the radiation dose rate, check the shield<strong>in</strong>g and perform a<br />
leak test on the source.<br />
By 2.30pm, hav<strong>in</strong>g squeezed <strong>in</strong> a quick lunch, I’m on my way to a laboratory where an unknown and<br />
unlabelled flask <strong>of</strong> liquid has been found <strong>in</strong> a fridge with a radiation trefoil sticker on it. I have this<br />
liquid analysed to determ<strong>in</strong>e if any radionuclide is present, establish the activity levels and<br />
advise on its safe disposal.<br />
3.30pm – I’m back <strong>in</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fice, prepar<strong>in</strong>g for tomorrow’s College Radiological<br />
Safety Committee meet<strong>in</strong>g. Some <strong>of</strong> the issues, which are com<strong>in</strong>g up, <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
the safety aspects <strong>of</strong> liquid sources <strong>of</strong> radiation generally used as tracers or<br />
markers <strong>in</strong> experimental procedures. In addition we will be consider<strong>in</strong>g ‘Sealed<br />
sources’, i.e. solid, encapsulated, ma<strong>in</strong>ly gamma sources <strong>of</strong> radiation used<br />
to irradiate other materials, and ‘X-ray equipment’ which range from bone<br />
densitometers for assess<strong>in</strong>g diseases such as osteoporosis to X-ray<br />
diffraction equipment for analysis <strong>of</strong> materials.<br />
4.00pm I meet an academic staff member regard<strong>in</strong>g a new project<br />
<strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g the importation and use <strong>of</strong> uranium and thorium<br />
compounds. I assess his laboratory facilities and enquire about<br />
activity levels to ensure that regulatory requirements can be<br />
complied with. I write a risk assessment and justification case<br />
for submission to the Radiological Protection <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Ireland</strong>.<br />
5.15pm Phew – time to get home! Apart from my work as<br />
College RPO for Tr<strong>in</strong>ity College, I am also a Chartered<br />
Radiation Protection Pr<strong>of</strong>essional with my own<br />
private bus<strong>in</strong>ess ‘Radiation Safety <strong>Ireland</strong>’ provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
consultancy, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and advice services to <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
(www.radiationsafety.ie). On the tra<strong>in</strong> I use this time<br />
to answer an e-mail enquiry from one <strong>of</strong> my clients<br />
sort<strong>in</strong>g out a site visit to a pharmaceutical plant<br />
later this week. My clients are many and varied<br />
and <strong>in</strong>clude major pharmaceutical companies,<br />
research and education facilities, gamma<br />
irradiator facilities, government agencies and<br />
waste management companies throughout<br />
<strong>Ireland</strong>.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Rocket Scientist<br />
OK let me start with a confession. I don’t actually build rockets. Rather I develop magnetometer experiments for<br />
satellites that sit on top <strong>of</strong> rockets! But I’ve been called a rocket scientist too many times to remember and I’ve<br />
seen plenty <strong>of</strong> spacecraft up close and personal over the years.<br />
My job is a mixture <strong>of</strong> mission specific hardware builds and research <strong>in</strong>to new magnetic sens<strong>in</strong>g technologies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> magnetic field is a fundamental parameter <strong>in</strong> outer space. It tells us, for example, how the plasma stream<strong>in</strong>g<br />
from the sun <strong>in</strong> the form <strong>of</strong> the solar w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>teracts with the Earth’s magnetic field, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Northern Lights.<br />
Usually the morn<strong>in</strong>g will start with a review <strong>of</strong> the overnight emails report<strong>in</strong>g the status <strong>of</strong> our <strong>in</strong>struments<br />
<strong>in</strong>-flight. <strong>The</strong>se reports are critical because if there are problems we need to engage with the Operations<br />
Centre to address them via telecommand. Fortunately this is a fairly rare occurrence even though the space<br />
environment is tough – low pressure vacuum, thermal extremes, ionis<strong>in</strong>g radiation. It’s one <strong>of</strong> the reasons why<br />
project cycles can be <strong>of</strong> the order <strong>of</strong> twenty years – you design, build and test, test, test.<br />
Follow<strong>in</strong>g this we will have a range <strong>of</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>gs or tele-conferences on active hardware<br />
developments. Many days are spent on mission either at <strong>in</strong>dustrial sites, space agencies<br />
or other universities. This bus<strong>in</strong>ess is def<strong>in</strong>itely for you if you like to travel. Although<br />
with strict launch deadl<strong>in</strong>es it can sometimes mean some very long hours. But it’s<br />
a very satisfy<strong>in</strong>g feel<strong>in</strong>g to see the rocket on a launch pad, know<strong>in</strong>g your kit is<br />
about to be blasted <strong>in</strong>to space.<br />
In the early afternoon I’ll spend some time <strong>in</strong> the lab. One current area<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest is t<strong>in</strong>y magnetometers based on magneto-resistance. <strong>The</strong><br />
2007 Nobel prize for <strong>Physics</strong> was awarded for work <strong>in</strong> this field and<br />
applications are a hot topic. In the late afternoon it’s back to the<br />
PC, usually a proposal, paper or <strong>in</strong>terface deadl<strong>in</strong>e has appeared<br />
<strong>in</strong> my calendar.<br />
We even hope to launch or own spacecraft <strong>in</strong> the near future.<br />
A small CubeSat, only 1kg and so small you can hold it <strong>in</strong><br />
the palm <strong>of</strong> your hand. We have several MSci students<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g on this project and it represents a perfect<br />
opportunity for test flight <strong>of</strong> our new magneto-resistive<br />
sensors. Our own spacecraft <strong>in</strong> outer space - then I<br />
could call myself a real rocket scientist.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Solar Physicist<br />
A typical day? Well that depends! My job consists <strong>of</strong> several aspects. <strong>The</strong> first and ma<strong>in</strong> one is research. For that<br />
I make use <strong>of</strong> spacecraft and ground-based observatory datasets to try and understand explosions on the Sun.<br />
This <strong>in</strong>volves a lot <strong>of</strong> comput<strong>in</strong>g work, and also much collaboration <strong>in</strong>ternationally.<br />
All <strong>of</strong> our space missions are <strong>in</strong>ternational collaborations. Our ma<strong>in</strong> hardware partners are <strong>in</strong> Japan and the US.<br />
Ground-based observatories are all over the world from Poland to Ch<strong>in</strong>a to Argent<strong>in</strong>a. We make use <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternet to get access to many <strong>of</strong> these datasets, but also have opportunities to meet with people from around<br />
the world, design observ<strong>in</strong>g campaigns, and help design new spacecraft <strong>in</strong> the future.<br />
Another aspect <strong>in</strong> my job is teach<strong>in</strong>g. I lecture to first year undergraduates <strong>in</strong> astronomy. This is a lot <strong>of</strong> fun,<br />
as it is an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g subject to teach, and many students have already tried their hand at astronomy to some<br />
level. I also supervise PhD students and am the graduate tutor for our department. Graduate level<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g is very different as the aim is for each student to leave as an <strong>in</strong>dependent and<br />
confident researcher. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraction between ‘teacher’ and student is different from<br />
that at undergraduate level as it concerns research: the answers are never known <strong>in</strong><br />
advance so new territory is always be<strong>in</strong>g explored.<br />
<strong>The</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al part <strong>of</strong> my job <strong>in</strong>volves space mission work. I am the project<br />
scientist for the UK/Japan/US mission, Solar-B. This <strong>in</strong>volves ensur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that the <strong>in</strong>strument design will fulfil the science goals.<br />
As with many other parts <strong>of</strong> my job, there is travell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volved to<br />
meet with collaborators <strong>in</strong> Japan and the US – and follow<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
launch I hope to spend an extended period <strong>in</strong> Japan where the<br />
spacecraft operations will take place.<br />
<strong>The</strong> other project with which I’m <strong>in</strong>volved is Solar Orbiter.<br />
It is <strong>in</strong> its <strong>in</strong>fancy, but is expected to be launched by ESA<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2015 and is a mission to orbit the Sun. <strong>The</strong>re are a<br />
lot <strong>of</strong> technical challenges for a mission such as this,<br />
and I am work<strong>in</strong>g with top-class eng<strong>in</strong>eers to ensure<br />
that we have a suitable <strong>in</strong>strument design and safe<br />
technology to successfully carry out this mission.<br />
This work is be<strong>in</strong>g done <strong>in</strong> collaboration with<br />
other European colleagues from Belgium,<br />
France, and Germany.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Solar <strong>The</strong>rmal Research Physicist<br />
I usually arrive <strong>in</strong>to work around 8am; check my emails and then it’s down to work proper. I should expla<strong>in</strong> I<br />
work <strong>in</strong> the R&D department <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>rmomax Limited, a manufacturer <strong>of</strong> evacuated solar collectors. Today I’ve<br />
got a new prototype collector to test under the solar simulator. <strong>The</strong> simulator allows me to measure a collector’s<br />
performance relatively quickly, which is very useful as the weather conditions <strong>in</strong> Northern <strong>Ireland</strong> are not always<br />
favourable for outside test<strong>in</strong>g. As the collector was mounted onto the test rig the previous day, it’s just a matter<br />
<strong>of</strong> switch<strong>in</strong>g on the test lights and analys<strong>in</strong>g the data. This test takes approximately two hours dur<strong>in</strong>g which time I<br />
check on material specifications relat<strong>in</strong>g to the prototype.<br />
In general, though, my day-to-day duties are somewhat varied. Some days I’ll be modell<strong>in</strong>g the performance<br />
<strong>of</strong> a solar thermal collector, present<strong>in</strong>g a paper at a conference or even fabricat<strong>in</strong>g some components <strong>in</strong> the<br />
workshop.<br />
For the rest <strong>of</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g I’m <strong>in</strong> correspondence with a partner at Athens agricultural university. For this project<br />
we designed a 240m 2 collector field for driv<strong>in</strong>g a Rank<strong>in</strong>e cycle system for saltwater desal<strong>in</strong>ation by<br />
reverse osmosis. I’m really just check<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>, gett<strong>in</strong>g an update on the project and answer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
any technical queries they may have. <strong>The</strong> objective is to provide farm<strong>in</strong>g quality/dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
water to communities on the remote Greek islands where freshwater is an expensive<br />
and limited commodity. <strong>The</strong> system is about to go live shortly and it should be quite<br />
excit<strong>in</strong>g when the results start com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>. You can check out the site at http://<br />

In the afternoon a colleague and I drive up to the Centre for Susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />
Technologies at the University <strong>of</strong> Ulster’s Jordanstown Campus. We’re<br />
<strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g potential students <strong>of</strong> a jo<strong>in</strong>t PhD studentship position<br />
between <strong>The</strong>rmomax and UUJ characteris<strong>in</strong>g the performance<br />
<strong>of</strong> collectors with optimised solar exposure. Initially we discuss<br />
with the project head what form the <strong>in</strong>terview will take and what<br />
questions will be asked <strong>of</strong> the candidate. This process takes<br />
around two hours before we return to the factory.<br />
Back at my desk I prepare for a meet<strong>in</strong>g I have tomorrow<br />
with a company that develops th<strong>in</strong>-film technologies. I read<br />
the report they provided and prepare some questions and<br />
comments about their process.<br />
And that’s the end <strong>of</strong> another day, I tidy up any loose<br />
ends I may have and head home.<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Strategic Planner <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physics</strong><br />
9.15am – Phone r<strong>in</strong>gs as I come through the <strong>of</strong>fice door – a call from an environmental journalist. This is on foot <strong>of</strong><br />
a press release which I sent out yesterday <strong>in</strong> relation to climate change and global warm<strong>in</strong>g. He is fir<strong>in</strong>g questions<br />
at me about the rate <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> greenhouse gas emissions <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong> and whether this is meet<strong>in</strong>g European<br />
targets. Luckily, I had recently been <strong>in</strong> contact with the Environmental Protection Agency and had the up-to-date<br />
figures to hand or at least buried under only a moderate layer <strong>of</strong> paperwork on my desk. Although my background<br />
is <strong>in</strong> Astrophysics, <strong>in</strong> my job as policy <strong>of</strong>ficer for the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Physics</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong> I f<strong>in</strong>d myself tapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to many<br />
broad areas <strong>of</strong> the subject and enjoy keep<strong>in</strong>g myself aware, at least at a surface level <strong>of</strong> what is happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
physics.<br />
By 10.00am I have dealt with most <strong>of</strong> the multitude <strong>of</strong> emails which have come <strong>in</strong> overnight and I’m start<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
put together a newsletter article about a recent meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the heads <strong>of</strong> physics departments <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong> with the<br />
government chief Science adviser. Policy work is about formulat<strong>in</strong>g ideas on physics issues and then attempt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to <strong>in</strong>fluence education/academia/government/<strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> these areas. So this meet<strong>in</strong>g allowed the <strong>Institute</strong> to<br />
f<strong>in</strong>d out at first hand the issues affect<strong>in</strong>g third level teach<strong>in</strong>g and research and to ensure that this is<br />
heard at a senior government level.<br />
11.30am – while hav<strong>in</strong>g a quick cup <strong>of</strong> c<strong>of</strong>fee, I scan through a recent report on UK<br />
salaries which shows that graduates <strong>in</strong> physics and chemistry have significantly<br />
higher lifetime earn<strong>in</strong>gs than graduates <strong>in</strong> most other areas <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g psychology,<br />
biological sciences, bus<strong>in</strong>ess and arts. Make some phone calls to the authors<br />
<strong>of</strong> the report to see if the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs can be extended to <strong>Ireland</strong> – the good<br />
news is Yes!<br />
1.00pm – Intend to go to gym, but have a sandwich <strong>in</strong>stead with<br />
colleagues <strong>in</strong> the physics department at Dubl<strong>in</strong> City University and<br />
catch up on lots <strong>of</strong> gossip. Afterwards get to work on arrangements<br />
for an upcom<strong>in</strong>g medical physics conference, call<strong>in</strong>g potential<br />
speakers and check<strong>in</strong>g the venue’s lunch facilities. No matter<br />
how good the talks are people always want a decent meal –<br />
or is that just me? Part <strong>of</strong> my work is to th<strong>in</strong>k strategically<br />
about how the <strong>Institute</strong> can work with other organisations<br />
to promote <strong>Physics</strong>. So have decided to work closely<br />
with the Irish Medical Devices Association <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g<br />
this meet<strong>in</strong>g. This should help enhance l<strong>in</strong>ks between<br />
academics and <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
4.00pm – start to put together some figures on<br />
numbers <strong>of</strong> physics teachers <strong>in</strong> N. <strong>Ireland</strong> for<br />
tomorrow’s meet<strong>in</strong>g with the Institution <strong>of</strong><br />
Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Technology <strong>in</strong> Belfast. We share<br />
a similar concern about resources for teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
science <strong>in</strong> schools and together we might be<br />
able to push through some <strong>in</strong>itiatives on this.<br />
By 5.30pm I’m ready to leave – tomorrow<br />
will be a totally different day, comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
travel, meet<strong>in</strong>gs and some work at<br />
home to ensure all is ready for the<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g day. For now – it’s home<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a Video Producer<br />
As Producer/Director at media company Agtel, I’m <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> some major science communication projects that<br />
enable me to comb<strong>in</strong>e my physics background with my <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> television production.<br />
Today is go<strong>in</strong>g to be very busy as Science Week <strong>Ireland</strong> is <strong>in</strong> full sw<strong>in</strong>g and we’re film<strong>in</strong>g the launch <strong>of</strong> a<br />
telescope project for schools on behalf <strong>of</strong> our client, Discover Science and Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. I meet the crew at our<br />
<strong>of</strong>fices at 8am and we transfer all the film<strong>in</strong>g equipment to one <strong>of</strong> our crew vehicles before head<strong>in</strong>g to our first<br />
location <strong>of</strong> the day. As Producer/Director, it’s my job to lead the whole production and make sure that we film the<br />
right material to make a strong story when we edit the f<strong>in</strong>al video together. I’ve already spent the best part <strong>of</strong> a<br />
week plann<strong>in</strong>g the logistics <strong>of</strong> this shoot and what the f<strong>in</strong>ished story will look like – discuss<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs with the<br />
client at every stage to make sure that we give them maximum value.<br />
Produc<strong>in</strong>g video projects is all about communicat<strong>in</strong>g sometimes complex concepts <strong>in</strong> a way that engages<br />
and even enterta<strong>in</strong>s the target audience. I f<strong>in</strong>d that the research skills I learned while study<strong>in</strong>g physics<br />
at Tr<strong>in</strong>ity College Dubl<strong>in</strong> really help me understand complicated scientific ideas quickly and<br />
convey them clearly. My experience <strong>of</strong> problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g with technical equipment dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
my Masters degree <strong>in</strong> nanotechnology also helps when I’m us<strong>in</strong>g our sophisticated<br />
camera and edit<strong>in</strong>g equipment.<br />
We move quickly when we arrive on location to set up all the equipment <strong>in</strong> the<br />
best position. Once we’ve filmed all the speeches, we <strong>in</strong>terview some <strong>of</strong> the<br />
key participants and then travel to our next location. This afternoon the<br />
Dubl<strong>in</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Technology has <strong>in</strong>vited a lot <strong>of</strong> young people from<br />
schools all over the city to have a go at dozens <strong>of</strong> colourful science<br />
demonstrations. After we’ve filmed a wide variety <strong>of</strong> experiments,<br />
we head back to the <strong>of</strong>fice and I move on to one <strong>of</strong> my other<br />
science projects.<br />
One <strong>of</strong> the projects I’m produc<strong>in</strong>g is a series <strong>of</strong> educational<br />
DVDs for schools all over Europe by the European Space<br />
Agency. Today we’re work<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>in</strong>structions for the<br />
astronauts – for every DVD <strong>in</strong> the series an ESA astronaut<br />
films experiments on board the International Space<br />
Station, and we also film the students <strong>in</strong> four schools<br />
around Europe do<strong>in</strong>g similar experiments. It’s<br />
very excit<strong>in</strong>g to watch the footage from space <strong>of</strong><br />
the astronauts float<strong>in</strong>g around follow<strong>in</strong>g your<br />
<strong>in</strong>structions!<br />

A day <strong>in</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> a W<strong>in</strong>d Analyst<br />
Each morn<strong>in</strong>g, I arrive <strong>in</strong> the Airtricity <strong>of</strong>fice, greet my colleagues and switch on my <strong>in</strong>dispensable laptop. First<br />
task <strong>of</strong> the day is an important one: I check that all <strong>of</strong> Airtricity’s w<strong>in</strong>d monitor<strong>in</strong>g masts around the world have<br />
sent <strong>in</strong> their data overnight. If one hasn’t, I analyse the problem, come up with the solution and arrange for it be<br />
fixed straight away. Sometimes, I must make the trip to the mast and fix the problem. In summer, this can mean<br />
an enjoyable day-trip from the <strong>of</strong>fice to one <strong>of</strong> the many hills throughout the island, each with its own spectacular<br />
view. On w<strong>in</strong>ter days, well, let’s just say you really appreciate the power <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d!<br />
Next I turn my attention to the data that has arrived and perform some quick statistical checks to ensure the<br />
data is reliable us<strong>in</strong>g some s<strong>of</strong>tware I’ve developed. Good computer skills are a great advantage for the modern<br />
physicist and allow me to accomplish so much more.<br />
Why do we need this data? Surely, a hill <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong> is w<strong>in</strong>dy enough? Well, the real question is how w<strong>in</strong>dy? We want<br />
to produce as much clean renewable electricity as possible from these graceful w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es, so we must f<strong>in</strong>d the<br />
best places to put them and know as accurately as possible how much electricity we can generate over the next<br />
20 years. Co<strong>in</strong>cidentally, the next item on my list requires me to estimate the potential 20 year energy production<br />
from what is now just a hill. I process several years <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d data and after several steps reduce it<br />
to a probability distribution represent<strong>in</strong>g the expected long-term w<strong>in</strong>d climate. This process<br />
simplifies the next analysis, where I use sophisticated flow model<strong>in</strong>g to model the w<strong>in</strong>dflow<br />
across the hills, lakes, trees – pretty much anyth<strong>in</strong>g really.<br />
Once I have produced a ’digital w<strong>in</strong>d map’ for the site, the next step is to locate<br />
the turb<strong>in</strong>es. <strong>The</strong>re are many turb<strong>in</strong>e models to choose from, so I select the<br />
most suitable model for this site and then maximise their future electricity<br />
production by programm<strong>in</strong>g our fast workstation to optimise the w<strong>in</strong>d farm<br />
layout under the constra<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />
This computation can take many hours, so <strong>in</strong> the meantime, I prepare<br />
my report and methodically take account <strong>of</strong> uncerta<strong>in</strong>ties <strong>in</strong> each<br />
step <strong>of</strong> the analysis. At the end <strong>of</strong> it all, I present a nice round 20<br />
year energy production figure to our f<strong>in</strong>ance people. If the site is<br />
‘a runner’, the w<strong>in</strong>d farm layout goes <strong>of</strong>f to the men <strong>in</strong> hard hats<br />
for construction.<br />
When this essential work is done, I turn my attention to<br />
my various sidel<strong>in</strong>e projects, sometimes work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
our trad<strong>in</strong>g, f<strong>in</strong>ance and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g departments. <strong>The</strong><br />
quantitative skills <strong>of</strong> a physicist are <strong>of</strong>ten called upon<br />
to solve their problems. Today, I will work on the w<strong>in</strong>d<br />
power forecast<strong>in</strong>g project where we want to accurately<br />
forecast our w<strong>in</strong>d power several days ahead. Given<br />
the relative <strong>in</strong>fancy <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry, these projects<br />
<strong>in</strong>volve a new piece <strong>of</strong> research that I can later<br />
adapt <strong>in</strong>to a research paper. In the past, I<br />
have been <strong>in</strong>vited to present such work at<br />
conferences <strong>in</strong> Europe where I have met many<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g people from across the world<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d energy.<br />

am part <strong>of</strong> a larger movement, to use<br />
smarter and less pollut<strong>in</strong>g forms<br />
<strong>of</strong> energy and help fight climate<br />
change, makes it so much more<br />
