neem seed kernel extract, chilly-g<strong>in</strong>ger-garlic extract,<br />

erect<strong>in</strong>g bird perches to attract predatory birds,<br />

pheromone traps, light traps, summer plough<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

application of NPV are practiced. All these methods<br />

are not only cost-effective but are also susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

technologies and with<strong>in</strong> the reach of all categories of<br />

farmers. The chances of <strong>in</strong>sects develop<strong>in</strong>g resistance<br />

to these methods are very remote, whereas the<br />

chances of such resistance development is imm<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

<strong>in</strong> case of <strong>Bt</strong> <strong>cotton</strong>.<br />

A good ra<strong>in</strong>fall provides farmers good returns from<br />

the <strong>cotton</strong> crop, whereas frequent unfavourable<br />

weather conditions make them vulnerable and push<br />

them <strong>in</strong>to a debt trap. Assured market for the <strong>cotton</strong><br />

and readily available credit on the farm <strong>in</strong>puts enables<br />

farmers to choose this crop even <strong>in</strong> the ra<strong>in</strong>fed areas.<br />

In Warangal district a number of NGOs, viz., MARI,<br />

PRAGATI, CROPS and SYO are promot<strong>in</strong>g NPM<br />

methodology <strong>in</strong> <strong>cotton</strong> cultivation.<br />

Janagaon Mandal <strong>in</strong> Warangal is an area with<br />

predom<strong>in</strong>antly red soils with annual ra<strong>in</strong>fall less than<br />

700mm, not favourable for <strong>cotton</strong> cultivation.<br />

Nevertheless, farmers are more <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> cultivat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>cotton</strong> as it can be profitable. CROPS is an NGO<br />

promot<strong>in</strong>g NPM methods <strong>in</strong> the cultivation of <strong>cotton</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> this mandal. Data from 10 farmers us<strong>in</strong>g NPM <strong>in</strong> a<br />

village called Enubai was collected and compared with<br />
