If they have not been vaccinated against these diseases, or have received
only the first doses, this is the opportunity to administer the first or the
second doses. Vaccine is the best way to protect boys and girls from these
diseases and, above all, from their serious complications. MMR vaccine can
be administered to those who have already overcome one or two of the
three diseases: this will not cause an increase in secondary effects. A specific
therapy against measles, mumps and rubella does not exist, but these
diseases can be prevented with one safe and effective vaccination.
Have they suffered from chickenpox?
When the doctor or the health advisor of the vaccination service gives the
DTaP booster injection, they will ask if the boy or girl has already suffered
from chickenpox. Chickenpox is a mild disease in children; in adolescents
and adults it becomes a more serious disease. If an adolescent has not contracted
the disease, vaccine is recommended in order to protect him/her
against the possible complication of the disease, more frequent for subjects
that fall ill after childhood.
MenC vaccine
This vaccine is effective and safe, it protects adolescents from meningitis
and other invasive forms caused by “meningococcal group C”. We suggest
this vaccine because these diseases, even though they are not very
frequent, appear in a serious form. Young people aged 16-24, above all
those who live in communities with accommodation (as a boarding school,
students residence, academies, ecc.), run a higher risk compared to other
people. MenC vaccine is administered for free, on the parents request.
Contraindications
Generally, all adolescents can be vaccinated: Conditions in which they can’t
be vaccinated are extremely rare. The real contraindications against DTaP
vaccine are evolutive neurological diseases. The real contraindications against
MMR vaccine and chickenpox vaccine are: - serious diseases or particular
therapies that cause a high deficit in the immune system;- Recent administering
of immunoglobulins;- pregnancy: MMR vaccine and chickenpox vaccine
must not be given to pregnant women, nor to women who want to conceive
a child within the next three months. Before executing the vaccination, the
doctor or the health advisor of the vaccination centre will ask some questions
to exclude the rare health conditions that contraindicate or do not recommend
the vaccine (pre-vaccination screening). It is always advisable to inform
the health staff about diseases, health checks or current treatments. In case
you have any doubt, please ask for more explanations. If the adolescent has a
disease with high temperature it is better to delay the vaccine and do it after
his/her recovery. Young people suffering from slight illnesses such as cold,
cough, mild temperature, can be vaccinated. Young people who are allergic
to egg protein can be vaccinated. Even if the mother is pregnant, the young
person can be vaccinated.
