Surveillance – from incident to Action intelligent Behaviour Detector – IBD Hey – what is happening over there? In your surveillance environment, an observed complex behaviour might not be fully comprehended by your operators. Small or complex changes in a situation may pass unnoticed. Different operators tend to interpret situations differently. The results? At best, inconsistencies in your situational awareness. Your system needs intelligence. Saab’s IBD – Intelligent Behaviour Detector – is your decision-support application for anomaly detection. It operates 24/7, fully automated and autonomously, pinpointing irregularities in the observed panorama using capabilities built from rules and algorithms, based upon state-of-the-art expert knowledge on behaviour patterns together with your customised threat analysis. Capabilities are configurable to address your specific application. IBD is part of Saab’s product line of intelligent sensor systems supporting surveillance – from incident to action. IBD is a software-based surveillance product for detecting the abnormal in normal situations. Today’s interconnected sensor systems provide huge amounts of information, which can cause operators to reach the boundaries of their cognitive capacity and begin to miss important events. IBD will add regularity to your surveillance. The product is built upon JAVA and will work with input from different track information sources, such as AIS, GPS, CCTV and radar sensors but also from other types of information. Saab’s IBD highlights threats, irregularities, inconsistencies, and anomalies in available information. The system combines knowledge-based detection with data-driven anomaly detection. This enables the system to find situations that can be defined beforehand as well as new, previously unknown situations that in some way deviate from the normal situations. IBD learns. By using information fusion and anomaly detection methods along with innovative methods of tracking information rather than sequences of positions, IBD facilitates the early detection of threats. IBD can also be used to make consistency checks, increase information fidelity, or perform higher-level information fusion to obtain new information of greater value. The platform-independent IBD can be run either as a stand-alone system or an integrated part of your current surveillance system.

Especially if you don’t know what it looks like. And if you don’t even know it is there. There are many reasons for automating anomaly detection. The opposite – relying on the operators’ manual detection of anything unusual – means building a great deal of arbitrariness into your surveillance system. Manual observation of output from surveillance cameras, radar sensors and other information flows tends to exhaust the operators’ observational skills, resulting in deteriorating focus on the task at hand. This is especially true if the periods of normality are long and continuous. To ensure the best available situational awareness in surveillance tasks, operators must therefore be supported in detecting anomalous behaviours. IBD allows operators to transform knowledge of your specific normality and your specific threat analysis into rules, in order to detect deviations worth taking a closer look at. The product will also learn from previous situations. IBD will alert operators to any anomalous incident. What is more important however is that it will work silently in the background as long as everything remains normal – by your definition. This means that your operators are free to focus on other tasks, more suitable for the human way of working. IBD helps you, as a decision maker, to focus more on threat analysis than on the abnormality of observed situations. The inclusion of Saab IBD in any surveillance system will help to simplify and make the demanding task of surveillance more efficient and reliable. IBD is domain-independent and will tirelessly monitor the surveyed situation in question until something “abnormal” happens, such as a ship taking an unusual route when approaching port, people loitering in different areas at unusual times, a car parked for a suspiciously long time in a parking lot, the same identification card used at different locations within an impossible time frame … you name it.
