<strong>Education</strong> is a vital part of any society. Formal <strong>in</strong>stitutions of<br />
education are among the largest consumers of published<br />
materials. Without them book publish<strong>in</strong>g would be a very<br />
different bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Even <strong>in</strong> a Web 2.0 world, most educational<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions still f<strong>in</strong>d pr<strong>in</strong>ted publications to be essential to the<br />
process of learn<strong>in</strong>g. The comb<strong>in</strong>ed pr<strong>in</strong>t publish<strong>in</strong>g market for<br />
the education <strong>in</strong>dustry is <strong>in</strong> the range of $12-14 billion per<br />
year <strong>in</strong> the U.S. <strong>Education</strong> publish<strong>in</strong>g companies are <strong>in</strong> the<br />
process of experiment<strong>in</strong>g with implement<strong>in</strong>g new forms (e.g.,<br />
electronic) of published material <strong>in</strong> their practices.<br />
Today, technology is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly becom<strong>in</strong>g a means for<br />
empower<strong>in</strong>g students, and is a method for communication.<br />
The digital divide, once seen as a factor of wealth, is now<br />
seen as a factor of education: those who have the opportunity<br />
to learn technology skills are <strong>in</strong> a better position to obta<strong>in</strong> and<br />
make use of technology than those who do not. Nextgeneration<br />
publishers will see much less dist<strong>in</strong>ction between<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>t and digital.<br />
Innovation and creativity are becom<strong>in</strong>g paramount. There is<br />
also an <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> just-<strong>in</strong>-time, alternate, or nonformal<br />
avenues of education, such as onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
mentor<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>in</strong>dependent study. Time to market is crucial:<br />

Lack of overall school fund<strong>in</strong>g is a major issue faced by this<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry. IT departments <strong>in</strong> the K-12 sector are fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />
shr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g budgets and are look<strong>in</strong>g to simplify security without<br />
sacrific<strong>in</strong>g control, while mak<strong>in</strong>g full use of exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>frastructure. At the same time, Internet-based risks are<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g and students cont<strong>in</strong>ue to use the Web as their<br />
preferred form of communication.<br />
Schools need comprehensive, easy-to-manage solutions that<br />
enable IT staff to focus on one primary objective: provid<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
safe and available network for learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Emerg<strong>in</strong>g trends <strong>in</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Publish<strong>in</strong>g Space<br />
The com<strong>in</strong>g year promises to be one of significant change for educational technology and e-content with<strong>in</strong> the education<br />
publish<strong>in</strong>g market. The education publish<strong>in</strong>g space will witness an irreversible shift toward ―conta<strong>in</strong>er-less‖ education on several<br />
fronts, and by year‘s end, there will be noticeable changes <strong>in</strong> the way e-content is created and distributed. With this broad<br />
