2013 Mocs tennis
outlook
season outlook
overview of the mocs in 2013
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
men’s and women’s tennis teams
are geared up for an exciting season of
collegiate tennis. The Mocs and Lady
Mocs are looking to continue the momentum
of big improvements on the court from
the 2012 campaign. Both squads return
the core of their lineups and both have
talented experience to lead their teams in
2013.
The men return their top eight players
from a 14-9 campaign in 2012, their best
record since 2007. UTC has improved its
win total in each of the last three seasons
and looks to build on that momentum with
a roster that includes seven seniors.
Senior Roberto Vieira (Bedfordview,
South Africa) is a three-time All-Southern
Conference performer and holds down
the top spot. Vieira was 10-8 at No. 1 in
duals last season and is 41-34 in singles
in his career. He also posted a 13-9 record
in doubles play.
The rest of the lineup is still to be determined
after the addition of three newcomers
at the semester break. Sophomore
Gino Delavalle (Rosario, Argentina) and
freshmen John Peavey (Emerald, Australia)
and Luke Saunders (Halifax, Nova
Scotia) are all expected to make in impact
on the lineup in the spring.
Senior Manuel Barroetavena (Buenos Aires,
Argentina) led the Mocs with a 21-8
singles record last season. He was 8-2 at
No. 4 before moving
up the lineup.
He posted a 9-2
record at No. 2 and
No. 3 during the
last half of the season.
That included
a 9-0 run in March
that earned him
SoCon Player of
the Month honors.
He finished the fall
season with a 7-5
mark, leading the
team in wins.
Other returning seniors
include Ankit
Chopra (Chandigrah,
India), Stephen Crofford (Franklin,
Tenn.), William Disterdick (Hixson, Tenn.),
Chris Smith (Johnson City, Tenn.) and
Jackson Tresnan (Apopka, Fla.). Sophomore
Pavels Grigorjevs (Riga, Latvia)
rounds out the returning players.
Tresnan was 14-8 in 2012, playing mostly
the No. 5 spot. He tied Vieira for the team
lead in doubles wins with a 13-7 record.
He was 5-0 in doubles and 3-1 in singles
in February, earning SoCon Player of the
Month recognition. Grigorjevs also had a
winning singles record, going 13-10 at No.
5 and No. 6 combined.
The women are coming off a 16-6 record in
2012, the most wins for the program since
1999. Head coach Jeff Clark is in the sixth
year of his second
stint as head coach
of the Lady Mocs.
He is five wins shy
(95-84) of 100 dual
victories in nine total
years as head
coach at UTC.
UTC returns four
letter winners,
while adding five
newcomers to the
2013 roster. Senior
Jenna Nurik
(Roswell, Ga.) is
a three-time All-
Southern Conference selection and had a
15-7 dual record at No. 1.
Sophomore Kaylene Chadwell (Franklin,
Tenn.) is also back after earning SoCon
Freshman of the Year honors with a 16-5
dual record. She was 7-1 at No. 2 and 8-2
in SoCon matches.
Junior Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) is a
two-year starter who was 11-7 in 2012.
Sophomore Claire Mulyadi (Semarang,
Indonesia) joined the team in January and
went 9-8 in singles in the spring.
The Lady Mocs newcomers are listed
as the No. 9 mid-major recruiting class
in the country by TennisRecruiting.net.
This group includes four-star signees
Kelsey Coots (Huntsville, Ala.), Katie Polk
(Woodstock, Ga.) and Kayla Jones (Memphis,
Tenn.), as well as three-star prospect
Alison Storie (Johnson City, Tenn.), and
Oklahoma State transfer Jovana Pecovski
(Apatin, Serbia).
Jones led the Lady Mocs with an 11-2 singles
record in the fall. She was also 7-3 in
doubles action. Coots went 8-3 in singles
play with a 7-2 record in doubles. Polk
was solid in doubles at 7-1 and also had a
7-2 singles mark.
