FOCUS<br />

The <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Conservatoire</strong> has its own degree-awarding powers up to taught Masters, and<br />

works with two <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>’s most prestigious universities in other areas: The University<br />

<strong>of</strong> St Andrew’s validates PhD degrees; and BEd Music is delivered in partnership with<br />

the University <strong>of</strong> Glasgow. Together they <strong>of</strong>fer:<br />

• Intensive training methods which are 100 per cent vocational, incorporating<br />

a rigorous schedule <strong>of</strong> public performances.<br />

The <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Conservatoire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

PARTNERSHIPS<br />

The <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Conservatoire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> is a recognised institution in the EU Socrates-<br />

Erasmus programme, linking it to 35 other conservatoires and institutions throughout<br />

Europe. Erasmus exchanges enable the <strong>Conservatoire</strong>’s students to study overseas as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> their course and students at partner universities to study with us. They also have<br />

links to other institutions that <strong>of</strong>fer student exchanges.<br />

The <strong>Conservatoire</strong> also has industry partners including Scottish Ballet, Scottish<br />

Opera, BBC <strong>Scotland</strong>, National Theatre <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, <strong>Royal</strong> Scottish National Orchestra,<br />

Shakespeare’s Globe, <strong>Royal</strong> Shakespeare Company, Playwrights’ Studio, <strong>Scotland</strong>, New<br />

Moves International, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Classic FM.<br />

RESEARCH STRENGTHS<br />

Now in its 11th year, the distinctive creative research ethos <strong>of</strong> the National Centre<br />

for Research in the Performing Arts (NCRPA) at the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Conservatoire</strong> continues to<br />

flourish. The research portfolio blends practice-based artistic research, applied research<br />

and consultancy with traditional scholarly approaches.<br />

The <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Conservatoire</strong>’s excellent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 result<br />

in Music showed that 85 per cent <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Conservatoire</strong>’s research in music is <strong>of</strong><br />

recognised international quality. The research pr<strong>of</strong>ile in drama is developing rapidly,<br />

particularly through the Centre for Voice in Performance.<br />

The <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Conservatoire</strong> has a thriving research degree programme in partnership<br />

with the University <strong>of</strong> St Andrews, and as a founder member <strong>of</strong> MIDAS it is at the<br />

forefront <strong>of</strong> developing thinking on practice-based research in music. There is an<br />

excellent record <strong>of</strong> attracting funding from external bodies, and <strong>of</strong> national and<br />

international research collaborations.<br />

EMPLOYABILITY<br />

At the <strong>Conservatoire</strong> students are treated as pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and are industry-ready when<br />

they graduate. In fact many have been engaged pr<strong>of</strong>essionally before graduation.<br />

The <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Conservatoire</strong> provides many opportunities for pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice in the<br />

industry, with a huge range <strong>of</strong> mentoring, side-by-side, and apprenticeship schemes,<br />

including Emerging Artists with Scottish Opera, and a new Young Artists in Residence<br />

programme. There are annual showcases for agents in Glasgow and London.<br />
