Dear Friends and Colleagues: 

The 2010-2011 fiscal year launched the start of the King County Bar Association’s (KCBA) 

quasquicentennial celebration. Throughout 2011 KCBA will celebrate 125 years of community 

service that has focused on assuring equal access to justice through pro bono legal services 

and diversity programs. It will also honor those whose donations of time, talent, and treasure 

make it possible to sustain these programs, year after year, regardless of the health of 

the economy. Let’s look at what your donations to the King County Bar Foundation (KCBF) 

accomplished in the 2010-2011 fiscal year. 

During the past year 1,200 attorneys, paralegals, law students, and community members 

provided 35,240 hours of pro bono legal services, a donation of professional time equal to 

$6,446,245. Through KCBA’s Pro Bono Services programs these volunteers assisted 10,755 of 

our low-income neighbors with legal issues impacting basic human needs such as housing, 

health care, and protection against domestic violence. In addition, KCBF awarded the 

University of Washington and Seattle University law schools a total of $125,000 for minority 

law student scholarships. It also supported the 9th annual Future of the Law Institute, 

introducing 101 high school students to career opportunities in the legal profession and 

offering scholarships to those pursuing a college education. 

These efforts were supported through generous donations from individuals, corporations, 

and our partners in the broader access to justice community. This past year KCBF received 

over $1,442,824 in donations and in-kind contributions to support pro bono and diversity 

programming. The 2010 King County Law Firm Campaign for Equal Justice (C4EJ) and the 2011 

Breakfast with Champions set records for both participation and overall donations. Thanks to 

close collaboration between KCBF and LAW Fund, C4EJ raised $491,600 from 122 King County 

law firms. Thanks to herculean efforts by KCBF trustees, the 2011 Breakfast was a sold-out 

event attended by 1,100 champions for equal justice and diversity. It raised nearly $300,000, 

with donations increasing nearly 9% over the preceding year.

It takes a collaborative partnership to secure equal access to justice for the most vulnerable 

in our community. We are fortunate to have several dedicated financial partners within and 

outside of the legal community in King County. Last year — and for several years — our 

efforts have been generously supported by several business community partners: Microsoft 

Corporation; Navigant Consulting, Inc.; Starbucks Coffee Company; FTI Consulting, Inc.; 

LexisNexis; and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Last year — and for several years — we’ve benefited 

from generous grants from the Legal Foundation of Washington, The Seattle Foundation and 

the Law School Admission Council. Consistently, law firms and individual practitioners across 

the King County legal community respond to our call for volunteers, financial donations, and 

in-kind contributions. 

In 2011 we celebrate and honor 125 years of community service and the contributions that 

make our programs possible. We also look forward to the years ahead, which will surely 

involve increasing need for services in an ever more challenging economy. Thank you for your

Ensuring 

Access 

to Justice 

Family Law 

Family Law includes the Family Law Mentor Program, the 

Kinship Care Solutions Program, and the Self Help-Plus 

Program. These programs assist clients with the following legal 

issues: direct representation for contested divorces where 

domestic violence is present and/or children are at risk, thirdparty 

non-parental custody cases, and non-contested divorces 

or parenting plans. 

Housing Justice Project 

The Housing Justice Project (HJP) provides free legal help to 

eligible low-income tenants facing eviction. This clinic meets 

daily at the Seattle King County Superior Courthouse in 

downtown Seattle and at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in 

Kent. HJP also offers evening clinics at the Seattle King County 

Superior Courthouse. 

Community Services 

Community Services includes the Neighborhood Legal Clinics 

(NLC) and the Volunteer Legal Services (VLS). NLC offers 

individuals a free half-hour consultation with an attorney. 

Attorneys determine whether the client has a legal problem, 

suggest possible options, and provide appropriate referrals. 

VLS offers eligible clients direct on-going representation. 

VLS takes cases in the following areas: Chapter 7 bankruptcy, 

vacating criminal records, Social Security overpayments, 

wills and estate planning, and debt defense.

Diversity 

in the Legal 

Profession 

KCBF Minority Law 

Student Scholarships 

KCBF is one of the largest providers of minority law student scholarships 

in Washington. In 2010-2011, KCBF distributed $125,000 to 

the University of Washington and Seattle University law schools for 

this purpose. Over 650 scholarships have been awarded through 

this program since it began in 1970, and over half of the scholarship 

recipients still practice in Washington. 

Future of the Law Institute 

Future of the Law Institute (FLI) is a year-long program for 

minority and economically disadvantaged high school students 

interested in learning more about a career in the law. FLI 

provides students with substantive legal workshops, career 

counseling, a mock trial, a courthouse tour, and opportunities 

to meet with legal professionals. Students are matched up with 

a mentor for the school year and are eligible for scholarships 

when they continue on to higher education. 

Building a Book of Business 

Based on the premise that those minority attorneys who are 

successful within law firms are more likely to stay, this program 

helps minority associates in private practice improve their chances 

for success. In a closed-door seminar, successful minority lawyers 

instruct participants how to effectively market themselves and 

acquire new clients for their firms.

Kudumu fled his East African home with his family of five 

hoping for a more peaceful and prosperous life in Seattle. 

Kudumu has AIDS, and while AIDS treatment in the U.S. is 

quite good, it is also expensive. Even with the help of local 

AIDS social service providers which made numerous services, 

including health insurance, available to Kudumu, he and his 

family were still struggling under a significant amount of 

medical debt. 

Understanding health insurance coverage is challenging for 

most of us, but for Kudumu and his family the challenge was 

increased exponentially by the fact that English is their second 

language. While Kudumu’s coverage was good, it was complex: 

one insurance provider covered only a particular time period, 

another covered only certain types of health care, and some 

of his healthcare was hospital-based and therefore covered 

through charity care. Kudumu was often told that his healthcare 

was covered, yet creditors were calling and stating that 

he owed quite a bit of money for the services he’d received. 

He didn’t know who to believe, but the medical bills that kept 

arriving at his door were frightening. 

The King County Bar’s Volunteer Legal Services (VLS) program 

connected Kudumu with a volunteer attorney who figured 

out which insurer should have covered what, uncovered a 

few mistakes made by the creditors, determined the health 

services for which Kudumu was responsible, and negotiated a 

payment plan that was within Kudumu and his family’s budget.

On Thursday, March 24, 2011, nearly 1100 members 

and friends of the legal community attended the 

King County Bar Foundation’s 11th annual Breakfast 

With Champions at the Westin Seattle hotel. The 

Breakfast, KCBF’s premier fundraiser, raised $291,577 

in contributions and sponsorships to benefit the 

Foundation’s pro bono civil legal aid and diversity 

programs. 

Jeffrey Toobin, CNN senior analyst and best-selling author of The 

Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court, captivated 

the audience with his engaging and humorous recap of the past 

50 years of the Supreme Court. The program, emceed by Peter 

Ehrlichman, also featured KCBF President Kate Battuello, KCBA 

President Mark Fordham, Washington State Attorney General Rob 

McKenna, Dean Mark Niles (SU), Dean Kellye Y. Testy (UW), and 

Hon. Charles S. Burdell, Jr. (Ret.).

Mimi and Todd Menenberg 

The Breakfast, the largest annual gathering of attorneys in the 

state, helps the Foundation provide civil legal aid for over 10,000 

low-income King County residents and approximately 50 scholarships 

for minority law students at SU and UW each year. The 

Foundation premiered a video produced by Tainter & Associates 

that highlighted two pro bono client stories, and Anupa Iyer, 3L 

from Seattle University and a KCBF minority law student scholarship 

recipient, shared how she got to law school.

Geraldine was so grateful to find the Housing Justice Project 

(HJP) in the Law Library at the King County Courthouse, just like 

the young woman at 2-1-1 said she would. It was such a relief 

after dealing with the March rain and wind that morning, not to 

mention the notice in her handbag that said she had 20 days 

to leave her home. Off and on throughout the last year she’d 

received a few 10-day notices, but when those had arrived her 

middle-aged son had helped her sort it all out. 

Geraldine was surprised at how many other people were waiting 

at HJP, but soon an HJP volunteer attorney came over to ask her 

what had happened before she’d received the 20-day notice. 

It didn’t take long to tell the volunteer the whole story and 

before Geraldine knew it, the attorney was talking with her 

landlord. Unfortunately, her landlord refused to negotiate a 

settlement that would allow Geraldine to stay in her apartment. 

However, the volunteer attorney was able to negotiate for more 

time for Geraldine to move out as well as a reserved judgment 

which, the volunteer explained to Geraldine, was crucial to 

Geraldine’s ability to find new housing. The Agreed Order, 

entered on March 1st, gave Geraldine until March 10th to move 

which didn’t seem quite what Geraldine had in mind when she’d 

arrived at HJP earlier that morning. 

But HJP wasn’t done yet. Though the timeline to help Geraldine 

find new housing was daunting at best, HJP made a direct 

referral to Solid Ground’s Seattle Housing Stabilization Services, 

noting the time sensitivity. Solid Ground made an appointment 

for Geraldine, qualified her for their services, and got her and 

her son re-housed without any interim period of homelessness.

Ida sat staring at the phone number for the Kinship Care Solutions Project and took a moment 

to think before she picked up the phone to dial. Her tribe and Child Protective Services 

had filed a dependency action because her daughter’s history of drug and alcohol abuse 

jeopardized her two granddaughters’ safety. The girls’ fathers weren’t in the picture either— 

one had been deported to Mexico for criminal activity and the other was in jail. The situation 

was messy but Ida knew her granddaughters belonged with her. She picked up the phone. 

The Kinship Care Solutions Project matched Ida’s case with a volunteer attorney. On Ida’s 

behalf the attorney filed a nonparental custody action, negotiated joinder with the mother and 

tribe, and defaulted the fathers. The girls now have long-term stability and security with Ida, 

without the intervention of CPS and child welfare. For Ida and the girls, Kinship Care made 

all the difference.
