to work together to protect the region’s
natural heritage, tapping into the very latest
technologies and innovations, particularly
in the area of green energy. I am encouraged
by the close work already underway across
the Caribbean between Governments and
NGOs. There is a clear recognition that
protecting the environment is not a luxury,
but critical to the success of the region’s
economy.
GREAT SCOTT: PROFILE
At the age of 37, Christina Scott is relatively
young for a Governor – and is only the second
woman Governor of an Overseas Territory.
Unusually Scott was not appointed from within
the FCO, but from the Cabinet Offi ce where she
formerly ran the Civil Contingencies Secretariat.
As Governor, Scott acts as the de facto head
of state. Rather uniquely, Anguilla is the only
Overseas Territory to revolt against the UK
Government with the aim of remaining British.
THEH H USE Anguilla has a unique littleknown
cultural and natural heritage – how
do you envisage protecting this whilst at
the same time sharing it benefits?
There’s clearly a careful balance to be
struck between protecting the cultural and
natural heritage with which Anguilla is so
well endowed, and making it accessible to
locals and visitors in a way that promotes a
better understanding and enjoyment, and
also encourages economic growth. There are
already some good examples – the ‘turtle
watches’ led by the Anguilla National Trust
and the Heritage Trail both improve access
to Anguilla’s jewels, whilst helping to protect
them. There’s a lot of potential for more.
Introducing boat tours around Dog Island, for
example, a globally important seabird colony,
would encourage new visitors to the island
and support local boat owners. Our waters are
breeding grounds for whales and dolphins, a
potentially strong draw for ‘green tourism’.
And catching lionfish for consumption would
help fishermen, whilst offsetting the negative
effect this invasive species is having on our
ecosystem.
