Following a number of significant incidents involving young people and mul level bunk beds, Legislaon has been introduced to ensure<br />
that all new, manufactured, mul level bunks comply or exisng bunks are to be modified. Legislaon states that we have unl 21 <strong>October</strong><br />
2013 to comply with the change in Legislaon<br />
The following is taken from the Office of Fair Trading brochure.<br />
7easy steps<br />
1. Only children over nine years of age should use bunk beds.<br />
2. Consider using single beds as a safer alternave to bunk beds.<br />
3. Don’t allow children to play on bunk beds.<br />
4. Allow at least two metres of clearance between ceiling fans and bunk beds.<br />
5. Ensure the ladder is firmly fixed to the bunk bed.<br />
6. Ensure there are no gaps of between 95mm and 230mm that could trap your child’s head.<br />
7. On the top bunk, make sure that the top of the guardrail is at least 160mm above the top of the<br />
maress to prevent children rolling out.<br />

The Westpac Community Treasurers’ Awards have been established<br />
to show appreciaon of the immense contribuon community<br />
treasurers make to their community Groups.<br />
Your nominaon should outline how your nominee:<br />
• Ensures good financial management Explain how your organisaon<br />
benefits from your treasurer's efforts at ensuring: (a) The<br />
organisaon's books are well kept; (b) Precauonary procedures<br />
are in place to guard against all forms of misappropriaon, misuse,<br />
the or embezzlement; and (c) any foreseeable risks are insured<br />
against<br />
• Ensures good financial governance Explain how your treasurer<br />
undertakes the responsibilies of: (a) Keeping the board/<br />
commiee/membership up to speed on financial issues; (b) Drawing<br />
up the organisaon's budget plan; and (c) Consulng widely in<br />
drawing up next year's budget<br />
Ensures good financial outcomes Explain how your treasurer has:<br />
(a) Developed fundraising strategies within the group; (b) Broadened<br />
the fundraising base; and (c) Developed and implemented<br />
innovave fundraising ideas.<br />
You will also be given the opportunity to provide addional informaon<br />
about why you think your nominee deserves a Westpac<br />
Community Treasurers' Award. The entry period is from August 2<br />
to <strong>October</strong> 26, <strong>2012</strong>. All entries must be received by midnight on<br />

<strong>2012</strong> Members of Parliament Naonal Volunteer Awards<br />
The <strong>2012</strong> Members of Parliament Naonal Volunteer Awards is an<br />
opportunity to recognise the contribuon of local volunteers to<br />
communies all over Australia. Members of Parliament around the<br />
naon are invited to take part by presenng awards in up to ten<br />
categories to volunteers in their electorates. Each MP is encouraged<br />
to organise and promote an Award ceremony to thank local<br />
volunteers for their outstanding contribuon and to recognise innovave<br />
and inspiring approaches to volunteering. Ideally, Award ceremonies<br />
will be held on or around Internaonal Volunteer Day, 5<br />
December <strong>2012</strong>.<br />
Nominang a Volunteer<br />
The Awards make it possible for all Australians to recognise someone<br />
who has given something back to their community and made a<br />
difference to other peoples’ lives.<br />
There are Award categories:<br />
• MP’s Volunteer of the Year<br />
• Junior Volunteer Award (17 and under)<br />
• Young Volunteer Award (18-25)<br />
• Senior Volunteer Award (65 and over)<br />
Eligibility<br />
When deciding to nominate someone for an Award, consider<br />
whether the person:<br />
• is widely recognised as a significant contributor to the community<br />
through their volunteering efforts;<br />
• contributes me and effort and sets an example for other volunteers<br />
to follow and aspire to;<br />
• provides guidance to other volunteers and where appropriate<br />
encourages others to volunteer; and volunteers selflessly and without<br />
seeking personal gain.<br />
