• Veterans court populations include all active service members in <strong>the</strong> military <strong>and</strong><br />

veterans who were discharged or released from duty. Dishonorably discharged veterans<br />

are ineligible.<br />

• Since veterans courts <strong>of</strong>ten h<strong>and</strong>le individuals who have co-occurring disorders<br />

(substance abuse <strong>and</strong> mental health), many veterans courts have adopted a model that<br />

includes components <strong>of</strong> both drug courts <strong>and</strong> mental health courts.<br />

• Veterans court participants may receive job training, group treatment sessions to discuss<br />

<strong>and</strong> process traumatic events, or o<strong>the</strong>r pr<strong>of</strong>essional or communal opportunities.<br />

Illinois veterans court operations are outlined in <strong>the</strong> Veterans <strong>and</strong> Service Members Court<br />

Treatment Act [730 ILCS 167/ et seq.]. A distinct advantage <strong>of</strong> such courts is that needed drug<br />

abuse or mental health treatment is provided by <strong>the</strong> individual’s veteran’s benefits, <strong>the</strong> costs <strong>of</strong><br />

such treatment <strong>of</strong>ten are a problem for o<strong>the</strong>r specialty courts.<br />
