May is hearing awareness month and
Deaf Access Simcoe Muskoka and The
Canadian Hearing Society want to raise
awareness about the services available
locally for deaf, deafened and hard of
hearing individuals.
Deaf Access Simcoe Muskoka and
The Canadian Hearing Society organizations
have partnered to offer programs
to people over the age of 55 who
are deaf, oral deaf, deafened or hard of
hearing. They share an ideal of respect,
communication and participation for
all of society.
Locally, the services are free and open
to both residents and visitors through
funding provided by the North Simcoe
Muskoka Local Health Integration
Network.
“These programs are important in
Muskoka because it’s an underserviced
population of people,” says Christine
Cox, general support service counsellor
for Deaf Access Simcoe Muskoka. “The
programs we offer are mainly senior
based and we go into their homes. It’s no
charge to anyone thanks to the funding
we receive.”
Deaf Access Simcoe Muskoka offers
services to those who are culturally Deaf.
Deaf Access provides general support
services, American Sign Language-to-
English interpreters, sign language classes
and advocacy and communication
accessibility education.
“The Deaf population’s language is
American Sign Language,(ASL)” says
Cox. “There are sometimes difficulties
bridging English to American Sign Language,
so I find there are a lot of times
when I’m helping to create understanding
between people.”
Services provided by The Canadian
Hearing Society are for those who are
hard of hearing, but not culturally Deaf.
The Canadian Hearing Society provides
counselling, which includes home
visits and education for those with hearing
loss, their family members and
other caregivers.
As well, The Canadian Hearing Society
provides demonstrations, information
and assistance with communication
devices such as visual smoke
alarms, specialized telephones and personal
listening devices.
“We offer ways for people to cope
with their new or continuing hearing
loss,” says Sara Clipsham, hearing care
counsellor at The Canadian Hearing
Society. “Our programs are offered to
55 plus, but we like to hear from anyone,
so we can help them find out who
they do need to speak to, even if we
can’t help them.”
With new legislation under the
Accessibility for Ontarians with
Disabilities Act requiring all public
places to become accessible in the next
year, Deaf Access and The Canadian
Hearing Society can be a resource for
those with questions on how to comply
with the law.
“Basically, we’re here as a resource for
the community at large and as a support
for deaf individuals,” says Cox.
Apart from the aforementioned programs,
throughout the year Deaf Access
and The Canadian Hearing Society
present seminars as part of their Accessible
Presentation Series. Various presenters
and topics are covered in the
series, with sign language interpreters
and note takers provided.
