Brandon Occhiuzzi, Kale Johncox and Jeffrey Johnson are looking
forward to playing on Huntsville’s two new soccer fields.
Soccer fields set to open
By Chris Occhiuzzi
A pair of new soccer fields will be
officially opened this month in
Huntsville.
The Huntsville Soccer Club is having
a grand opening for two new fields
in McCulley-Robertson Park on May
25 at 7 p.m.
All are invited to participate in this
event, with the Huntsville Soccer Club
holding a ribbon cutting ceremony
and offering cake to those in attendance.
Although the Huntsville Soccer
Club’s house leagues will begin play
the week before, the celebration has
been scheduled to follow Victoria Day
weekend.
The opening of the new fields is a
culmination of the Huntsville Soccer
Club’s efforts. Around five years ago,
the club began working on a plan to
develop new fields.
With rising enrollments into the
club’s youth programs, more space and
field time was becoming a necessity.
Finally, in Spring 2009, the
Huntsville Soccer Club and the Town
of Huntsville came together with a
plan to make this happen.
Work began on the new fields last
summer and thanks to the tireless
efforts of John Burnside, the cofounder
of the Huntsville Soccer Club
and the current club head, as well as
contributions from many other volunteers,
the fields are ready to go.
“The town’s been great with us.
They have been very co-operative,”
says Burnside. “We’ve worked really
well together and it’s huge bonus to
have these new fields this year.”
Also this year, the artificial turf field
at Conroy Park will be opened, creating
more opportunities from a business
and tourism standpoint.
“The two new fields and Conroy
Park coming on this year will allow us
to do tournaments and bring other
teams to town,” says Burnside. “Sports
tourism is very important to the town
and the club.”
Marisa Anderson, a personal trainer
and aerobic instructor at Muskoka
Fitness in Bracebridge says fitness
competition has transformed her life.
“I’ve always wanted to compete in
fitness competitions. Two years ago I
finally took the bull by the horns.
People thought I was crazy. I needed a
challenge, something outside of my
comfort zone, to prove the 200 lbs girl
that I was in the past has finally
changed.”
Anderson’s diet consists of oatmeal,
chicken and potatoes, tuna, salmon,
rice cakes with peanut butter, egg
whites and protein powder.
Anderson recently competed in the
Ultimate Fitness Events Spring Bash
in April and placed second in masters
fitness model category and third in
the masters figure model category.
Anderson has been featured on the
cover of Beyond Fitness magazine and
on XtremeLifeStylemag.com.
Kelly Hammond, director of operations
at FITT Gym in Hunstville, also
takes part in fitness competitions
when she’s not helping others transform
their own bodies.
“I know everyone here, their stories,
their goals, seeing their progress and
accomplishments. It’s motivating
helping people change their bodies,”
she says.
Hammond got inspired during an
annual 12-week lifestyle program that
Insurance Brokers
FITT Gym presents. She saw people
making positive changes in their lives
and committed to making changes to
her lifestyle.
In her first competition, the Ultimate
Fitness Event Spring Bash,
Hammond placed in the top ten in
two of the three categories in which
she was entered, earning her elite bikini
modeling card, which qualifies her
for competition at the national level.
“I’ve seen what I can do. I know
that I can accomplish anything. I’m
feeling fit and fabulous at 42,” she
says.
Carol Turner, a landscaper from
Huntsville, has also been bitten by the
bug and now devotes her life to training
and proper nutrition.
“Weight training changed my
physique. With nutrition and good
posture I feel empowered,” she says.
She entered the London Ontario
Physique Association show and competed
at the Ultimate Fitness Events
Spring Bash in Mississauga. Now she’s
got her sights set on the UFE Halloween
mayhem.
“The competition world is welcoming.
I’ve met lots of new friends,” she
says.
This sport requires discipline and
these women take their lifestyle choices
seriously. They go to bed early, eat
properly and follow a strict exercise
regime. The result is a hard, healthy
body, a boost in self-esteem and a lifetime
of stories.
