Advanced placement Summer Institute 4 “ Arrival at/ Departure from Saint Joseph’s College Free van service between the Portland air, bus and train terminals and the campus (about a 30 minute ride) is available to all participants residing on campus. A van service request form will be included in your registration information. If you are staying off campus, you are responsible for your own transportation. Course Tuition Tuition and fees for each course: $925 Tuition and fees with Room & Board included: $1250 Chemistry lab fee is $50 The tuition includes course materials, as well as lunch and a Maine lobster bake at the college’s Bon Appétit Café. Tuiton with room & board also includes breakfast and dinner. Dining Services Saint Joseph’s food service, Bon Appétit, is committed to fresh, high quality ingredients and creative cooking. We think you will find their offerings healthful, delicious, and unlike typical college fare. Meal service is cafeteria style and includes soups, hot entrees, deli selections, a salad bar that includes prepared cold salads, and a dessert and fruit bar. Participants choosing to stay off campus are responsible for arranging their own breakfast and dinner each day or may purchase meals at Bon Appétit. Please indicate this on your registration form. All participants will be awarded three Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Cancellation Policy A nonrefundable $100 deposit is required at the time of registration to reserve your place. The balance is due July 13, 2012. A P.O. from your school is considered full payment. Any cancellations received after July 13 will receive a 50% refund on the balance. The college reserves the right to cancel any course because of insufficient enrollment or for any other reason. Participants will receive a full refund.

Biology Michael Schaab, Department of Arts & Sciences at Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, Maine, has taught high school science for 28 years, and at the college level for the last seven years.He is a College Board consultant and exam reader, as well as a mentor for the State of Maine.He has developed and delivered numerous AP Chemistry and AP Biology workshops and summer institutes for the last eight years. His primary focus of educational interest and research is in the area of laboratory learning. CALCULUS AB/BC Gerald Pockl, of John Marshall High School, West Virginia, has been teaching AP Calculus since 1984, and has been an AP reader since 1996 and a table leader since 2001. He is the author of the six “free response” questions for Houghton-Mifflin’s AP Online Test Preparation (Dec. 2004). Chemistry Cheri Smith is the science department head at Yale Secondary, a mediumsized secondary school near Vancouver, British Columbia. Cheri has been teaching AP Chemistry since 1988, and she has worked as a consultant in the areas of AP Chemistry and Pre-AP Science for over a decade. Most recently, Cheri has assisted in editing and writing of the Special Focus materials for the College Board’s AP Chemistry workshops and the reviewing of materials for AP Central. She has been an AP Chemistry exam reader, table leader and question leader since 1998. Computer Science Maria Litvin has taught computer science and mathematics at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, since 1987. She is an AP Computer Science exam reader since 1996 and provides AP training for high school computer science teachers. Maria is a recipient of the 1999 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement for Mathematics, Science, and Technology for New England and of the 2003 RadioShack National Teacher Award. Prior to joining Phillips Academy, Maria taught computer science at Boston University. She is a co-author (with Gary Litvin) of Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam in Java, now in its fourth edition. Maria and Gary also co-wrote C++ for You++, and more recently Java Methods: Object-Oriented Programming and Data Structures, the textbook used for AP CS courses in hundreds of schools. Since 1999, the Litvins co-wrote questions for the Continental Mathematics League contests in computer science. This collection is now available in the book 250 Multiple-Choice Computer Science Questions in Java (Skylight Publishing, 2008). Their latest book is Mathematics for the Digital Age and Programming in Python (Skylight Publishing, 2008), now in its second edition (2010). 5
