Edge Hill was ranked in the top four ‘modern’ universities based on more than 50 responses to the questions posed to members of the YouthSight national student panel. They were asked to score a number of factors, which included their experiences of the quality of lectures and staff, social life, community atmosphere, the environment, industry contacts, security, support and welfare. Participants scored how their university performed on a seven–point scale, and each attribute was assigned a weight reflecting its importance within the overall student experience. Edge Hill achieved a six out of seven in the ‘I would recommend my university to a friend’ key indicator. The Ormskirk site also scored joint second nationally and top in the North West for its environment on campus and around the university and achieved some of the highest results in the country for its facilities, accommodation and relationships with teaching staff. Invested In addition, the university scored top in the North West for its support and welfare, centralised facilities and Students’ Union. The campus was also independently assessed by the Complete University Guide 2014 to have the lowest crime rates in the North West and the fifth most crime–free university in England and Wales. The first round of judging for the Be Inspired Business Awards (BIBA), which celebrates the achievements of the Lancashire businesses, began on Monday, May 19. Last month, the BIBAs reported a record 1,231 entries to the awards’ 17 categories. West Lancashire firms which have made it through to the first round of judging and will be going before the opening judging panel this month include Stocks Hall Nursing and Care Group, Direct365, White Moss Horticulture Ltd., Trelleborg Offshore UK Ltd., Pawberry Dog Wear and Fairbanks Environmental Ltd., in Skelmersdale, as well as ChocAmor and Longthorne Gunmakers Ltd., both based in Tarleton, and the Parbold Equestrian Centre. Last year, Skelmersdale–based Fairbanks Environmental picked up one of the awards’ leading prizes, Business of the Year. The judging panels for the remaining 16 prize categories will continue to meet Report by Danielle Thompson nominees until the end of the month. Karen Fitzgerald, of the Community Foundation for Lancashire who is part of the panel which will pick the Professional Services Business of the Year, said the judges had an “almost impossible task” to pick the winners. She said: “The judges’ work has already started because we have whittled down a record number of more than 1,200 applicants to the 119 businesses which will be represented at this first round of judging. “To just get to this stage we have had to rule out some fantastic businesses to ensure those on the shortlists are the cream of the crop, now the BIBAs’ judges have to use all their knowledge and experience to ensure only the very best of the best make it to the finals. “The Community Foundation for Lancashire, supported by The Grand, Clitheroe and Investec, is proud to sponsor the 2014 BIBAs, and we cannot wait to meet Broadcaster Eamonn Holmes presented the Fairbanks Environmental team with their award in September Code NA the inspirational businesses which have been shortlisted.” The businesses which make it to the awards’ prizegiving ceremony will receive a visit to their premises from the BIBAs’ judging panels between June 9 and July 1 so judges can have a first–hand look at the firms in action. Babs Murphy, chief executive of awards’ organisers, the North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, said the organisation of the BIBAs’ big night at the iconic Blackpool Tower in September is already underway. She said: “The entertainment is booked although we are having to keep the names of our acts under wraps until the night, and the preparations which make the BIBAs one of the best nights out in Lancashire’s business calendar are already underway. “Our team has already started to scope out the Tower venue and we are meeting on a regular basis to ensure nothing is left to chance. “We recognise the hard work which our BIBAs applicants put in to getting to our prizegiving ceremony so we pull out all the stops to make it an unforgettable night.” Eviction risk for 500–plus MORE than 500 homes in West Lancashire are at risk of eviction or repossession according to new figures released by Shelter. The housing charity has revealed the hotspots across the North West where people are most likely to face losing their home, showing Salford at the top of the list. West Lancashire is sixth. The borough is ranked 53rd nationally and its rate of possession claims is one in 79 households. The research is based on data recorded by the Ministry of Justice over the last financial year, showing how many homeowners and private or social renters have received a possession notice for their home. Shelter is warning that despite the beginnings of economic recovery, growing numbers of families are still set to struggle in the future. It predicts that with the majority of families already struggling month to month with their housing costs and interest rates set to rise, many could soon hit danger levels. Shelter’s free advice helpline is currently taking more than 480 calls each day. TV showcase for garden guru David Designer’s work is featured on new show Report by Henry James A GARDEN designer from Skelmersdale, who counts former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr among his ex–clients, has been given the opportunity to showcase some of his best work on television. David Andersen has teamed up with gardening expert and TV presenter Alan Titchmarsh on his new programme ‘Love Your Garden.’ And one of David’s designs in Bolton is included in the show as an example of excellence. The ITV programme features North West families all of whom have a child with special needs and the programme provides them with a complete garden makeover in just four days. The production company behind the show contacted David after sifting through many designs from the members of the Society of Garden Designers. Filming took place over a day and included a film crew of four and David and his team working with them to ensure the garden looked just right for the cameras. The garden in Bolton has been described as “a stunning example of a contemporary family garden full of flair yet eminently practical” and was completed in two months. The family involved have one child and another ‘on the way’ and wanted to be able to let them play in the garden but also wanted to showcase their own creativity and create a haven to relax in. Skelmersdale–based David has been involved in garden design for more than 25 years and has commissioned work for leading UK businessmen and Premiership footballers. He has also worked on large–scale set design projects with some of the UK’s most respected film directors, including David Lean and Stanley Kubrick. Commenting on the partnership with ITV and Alan Titchmarsh, David said: “As a garden designer it’s great that there’s such high–quality programmes on TV exploring the UK’s gardens and the inspiration behind the Skelmersdale–based garden guru David Andersen with TV presenter Alan Titchmarsh. design. “Working with Alan and the team at ITV was a pleasure and we are delighted that our work has been recognised in this way as he specifically chose our designs for the show. “The garden in Bolton is a great example of how beautiful a practical garden can be, and what can be achieved balancing so many demands put on it. We always start with evaluating the ‘spirit’ of the place and then build the design around that so that it takes on board the local environment, climatic conditions etc.” Waqas Hashemi, whose garden is featured on the programme, added: “We commissioned David to create and design a contemporary garden to reflect our mood and personality as he is a paragon of creativity and implementation. Not only did he answer our challenging brief but understood our underlying sentiment. David has a real passion for his craft and it shows.” Zumba and drama classes SKELMERSDALE Action for Youth (SAY) are working with the Artz Centre to provide Zumba and drama classes for youngsters.
