12 species, and more than one photo per species where appropriate (for example, where the coloration of females and juveniles differs from that of males); (4) a fillet photo for each commercial species; (5) a short list of simple diagnostic characters for each species; (6) distribution maps; (7) ordering the families in currently acceptable phylogenetic order (ie in the order of their natural groupings); and (8) links to other valuable information (such as each species’ genetic barcode, etc). The inclusion of obsolete names is an essential capability that would allow users to quickly link a current standard name with a name they may be more familiar with. With such large numbers of species and names used in Australia, it is probably impossible for anyone to identify and/or remember them all. Therefore, tools that associate previous names with standard names would be frequently used and very valuable. The inclusion of images would allow a user to quickly (even if somewhat crudely) recognise a species in question. Past experience with marketing names guides (i.e. Recommended Marketing Names for Fish, 1985, 1988; Marketing Names for Fish and Seafood in Australia, 1995; Handbook of Australian Seafood — an Identification Guide to Domestic Species, 1999) taught the FNC and its predecessors the importance and value of including images in publications that are essentially simply a list of names. Media and industry interest in the first two marketing versions (1985, 1988), which excluded images, was low, but when photos and illustrations of each species were included in the third version (1995), the profile of the series rose significantly. Soon after, when photos, diagnostic characters, distribution maps and other relevant information was included in the Handbook of Australian Seafood (1999), the book topped best-seller lists in Australia.
