The MIS/GIS Department is charged with two main responsibilities.
The first is to oversee the acquisition, implementation
and support of information technology, and the
second is to develop, distribute and keep current the Town’s
Geographic Information System (GIS).
In 2011 the MIS/GIS Department completed its redesigned
of the Town’s GIS Online Viewer. The GIS Online
Viewer is a resource available through the Town’s website
where visitors may create a customized map. Several dozen
features are available include parcels, zoning, topography,
wetlands and orthophotography. Many of the layers were obtained
through the Town’s recent aerial photography project.
Also during 2011 the Community Preservation Act funded
acquisition of a large format scanner that is being used
to preserve and protect Town maps and plans. Many of the
Town’s maps and plans are decades old, with some dating
back to the 1800s. These documents will not only be digitized
and protected from further damage, but will now be
more accessible to staff and the public.
With Tropical Storm Irene and the October snowstorm
fresh in our memory, the MIS/GIS Department will be evaluating
its disaster recover and business continuity procedures.
Additionally, ensuring compliance with new security
and data protection mandates will be a top priority in the
coming year.
This is just a brief summary of the many ways the Town
strives to utilize information technology to consistently improve
its services to Town residents, business and the general public.
