Burke Museum Annual Report 2<strong>00</strong>9 - 2010 15 Celebrating 125 years<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Washington</strong> students made more than 17,<strong>00</strong>0 visits to the Burke last year,<br />
interacting with museum staff and resources in multiple ways, including:<br />
Classes: Burke curators and staff taught nearly 2,<strong>00</strong>0 students in over 40 classes,<br />
ranging from dinosaurs to Native Art <strong>of</strong> the Pacific Northwest to public archaeology.<br />
In addition, UW students visited Burke exhibits as part <strong>of</strong> their studies.<br />
Collections: More than 1,5<strong>00</strong> students gained access to Burke collections and<br />
teaching collections as part <strong>of</strong> a class or to conduct research.<br />
Campus life: Internships, hourly work, and research positions provided invaluable<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional training to UW students, while outreach events—such as After Hours @<br />
the Burke, Trivia Night at the College Inn Pub, and the annual Chocolate Fair welcome<br />
event—invited students to experience the museum in a lively, social atmosphere.<br />

A grant from the Institute <strong>of</strong> Museum and Library Services is helping the Burke expand<br />
these services, with innovative new programs and promotions for the UW community,<br />
and the hiring <strong>of</strong> a new campus outreach coordinator position.<br />
