Scottish Cup Competitions
Sponsored jointly by the chairman
of City Refrigeration, Willie Haughey,
and the Scottish Government, the
2008/2009 Scottish Cup celebrated
Scotland’s national year of
‘Homecoming’ and the 250th
anniversary of the birth of Robert
Burns. The tournament produced
some thrilling football and upsets
along the way.
Dunfermline Athletic provided
one of the customary cup shocks,
defeating Aberdeen in the quarterfinal
replay in a dramatic penalty
shootout at Pittodrie. Their hopes of
glory were ended by Falkirk in a 2-0
semi-final defeat.
Rangers successfully defended
their trophy in a dogged final
against Falkirk, one played amid the
swelter of a sun-kissed south side of
Glasgow. Nacho Novo, a half-time
substitute, scored a spectacular
winner to ensure victory for Walter
Smith’s side.
The Scottish Cup competition
celebrated it’s 125th year in Season
2009/2010. The unique sponsorship
partnership continued with the Cup
joining in the Scottish Government’s
Active Nation campaign.
In the Scottish FA Youth Cup,
Hibernian deposed the holders,
Rangers, with a fine 2-1 victory at
Hampden Park.
St Mirren defeated Motherwell and
Celtic en route to the semi-final, Billy
Mehmet scoring the winning goal
in both ties, but their quest to reach
the final ended with a 3-0 defeat by
Rangers.
