SOUTH
Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city is an
intriguing blend of heritage and lifestyle,
scenery and vibrant culture. Hobart is a
city of fine restaurants, bustling markets,
fun, festivals and entertainment where
sandstone cottages and warehouses
echo Georgian days. Take a harbour
cruise or drive to the summit of Mount
Nelson or Mount Wellington.
Twenty five kilometres away is the historic town
of Richmond and the vineyards and wineries of
the Coal River Valley, home of superb cool climate
wines. Then through Sorell on to the Tasman
Peninsula where you can discover our convict
past at the historic site at Port Arthur and take
scenic walks to awesome sea cliffs.
South of Hobart the B68 takes you to Kettering,
port of the Bruny Island car ferry and the beautiful
waters of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. The
A6 takes you to Huonville and the Huon River,
Franklin where boat builders learn the traditional
skills of shaping Huon pine, Geeveston with the
awesome AirWalk, the dolomite caves at Hastings
and the historic Ida Bay Railway.
At Granton, north of Hobart you have the option
of travelling the Lyell Highway to the Derwent
Valley and Central Highlands or crossing the
Bridgewater Bridge to the start of the Heritage
Highway to Launceston.
The Lyell Highway follows the course of the
Derwent River towards Tasmania’s mountains
and wilderness, through the historic town of New
Norfolk and past the historic Salmon Ponds trout
hatchery. Beyond historic Hamilton and Ouse the
highway climbs to the central plateaux and Lake
St Clair, Australia’s deepest lake.
A number of routes divert to the stately town of
Bothwell in the highlands where lakes teem with
trout.
