Exhibitions New Galleries 22 February – 20 May Admission Free Conversations: Photography from the Bank of America Collection Conversations, an exhibition of over 100 photographs from the Bank of America collection, documents the evolution of photography and comprises early examples from the 1850s to the present day. The exhibition tracks the importance of photography as a medium which has only come to the fore in the last few decades, in terms of its acknowledgement within an art historical context. IMMA has hosted important photography exhibitions in the past; notably in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art, (MoMA), New York, on Picturing New York, which featured a selection of images highlighting photographers’ connections with New York City. In Conversations, there is also a link to MoMA as the parameters of Bank of America’s renowned photography collection were originally set by leading photographic historians Beaumont and Nancy Newhall who also established MoMA’s Photography Department. Conversations reflects the importance of photography as a means of documenting not only the everyday, but also of expanding our visual lexicon of how we mediate the world around us. The works included in the exhibition document the distant past, as in Seascape with Sailing Ship and Tugboat, Normandy, taken in 1857 by Gustave Le Gray, to our contemporary world of sophisticated museum audiences, documented by Thomas Struth, in his monumental photograph from 2004, Audience 4. The exhibition will include iconic photographers such as Robert Louis Frank, Dorothea Lange, Harry Callahan, Andreas Gursky and Thomas Ruff who capture the world’s imagination through their unique vision. The exhibition originated at the Museum of Fine Art, Boston and travelled to Museo del Novecento, Milan. Cover Image www.imma.ie
