Conference Objectives
1. Define the theory and operation of pulsatile and
non-pulsatile VADs and identify major components
of the VAD.
2. Describe appropriate clinical assessment specific to
VAD patients and identify the differences in assessment
between pulsatile and non-pulsatile devices.
3. Recognize early and late complications and
management associated with VAD therapy.
4. Discuss appropriate device exit site care.
5. Review appropriate steps for emergency
management of VAD patients patient including
critical alarms.
6. Identify proper technique for device management
through hands on demonstration of all the devices.
(HeartWare HVAD, Thoratec Heart Mate II LVAS, and
Thoratec PVAD/IVAD.)
