Conference Objectives<br />
1. Define the theory and operation of pulsatile and<br />
non-pulsatile VADs and identify major components<br />
of the VAD.<br />
2. Describe appropriate clinical assessment specific to<br />
VAD patients and identify the differences in assessment<br />
between pulsatile and non-pulsatile devices.<br />
3. Recognize early and late complications and<br />
management associated with VAD therapy.<br />
4. Discuss appropriate device exit site care.<br />
5. Review appropriate steps for emergency<br />
management of VAD patients patient including<br />
critical alarms.<br />
6. Identify proper technique for device management<br />
through hands on demonstration of all the devices.<br />
(HeartWare HVAD, Thoratec Heart Mate II LVAS, and<br />
Thoratec PVAD/IVAD.)<br />

and management of ventricular assist devices<br />
in the community.<br />
Target Audience<br />
EMS professionals, Paramedics and Community<br />
<strong>Health</strong> and Rehab Nurses.<br />
