• Close neighbours may be requested to provide a statement regarding your keeping
reptiles, and the Ministry assumes no liability in issuing a permit.
• The Southern African Python (Python natalensis) and the Namibian Dwarf Python
(Python anchietae) are both Protected Species. Permits to keep these two species
are given only after the keeper has demonstrated his/her ability to successfully
maintain other local species of snakes in captivity, keeping to permit conditions, and
continuing commitment to keeping reptiles. Therefore, permits to keep pythons are
not considered for first-time applicants
Attached is a schedule giving minimum sizes for holding facilities.
Please append on separate sheets (after reading attached background information):
1. Explanation of why you wish to keep reptiles.
2. Describe your past experience, and how you are qualified to keep reptiles in a
healthy state.
3. Describe plans for feeding the reptile (e.g. raising mice – describe facilities).
4. Where and how you will obtain the animals you wish to keep.
5. Describe the holding facilities, already available or envisioned.
6. If you live in a town or municipal area, please supply documentation, certifying
that they approve of your keeping reptiles within that area (this can be supplied
after the MET permit is issued, but before any reptiles are kept – to satisfy a
Municipality that a MET permit has been obtained before it gives its clearance).
MET recommends the following sequence to prepare your application:
Read all the documentation provided and carefully consider whether you think you are
likely to receive approval. If, yes:
• Contact your town or municipal authorities to request an in-principle approval.
• Submit completed application form, with all requested information provided, to
Permanent Secretary
Att.: Permit Office
Ministry of Environment and Tourism
Private bag 13306
Windhoek
Or
hand deliver to the Permit Office on RUHR St, Northern Industrial area,
Windhoek
\
• If your application is successful, obtain the written approval to keep reptiles from
your town/municipality, and submit this to the MET.
• You are now ready to keep the specified reptiles.
• Be sure and read and adhere to any conditions which will be printed on the
reverse side of your permit. Remember permits are good for one year only and it
is the permit holders responsibility to renew his permit as required.
• A regional MET official may request an inspection at any valid time.
