Methodology:<br />

This prospective study was conducted in <strong>the</strong> Maternal and Child Health Training Institute<br />

(MCHTI), Azimpur, Dhaka, during <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> mid 2008 to mid <strong>of</strong> 2009 in <strong>the</strong> department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gynaecology and Obstetrics and Anaes<strong>the</strong>siology.<br />

A total 98 patients who suffered from asthma, as diagnosed by <strong>the</strong> pulmonologist during<br />

ANC visit, were included in this study and ano<strong>the</strong>r 98 patients who were randomly selected<br />

from <strong>the</strong> all patients who attended in ANC and came to this institute <strong>for</strong> delivery or o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

end results <strong>of</strong> pregnancy. Both <strong>the</strong> asthmatic or non asthmatic patients were matched<br />

carefully according to <strong>the</strong> age and heights (after categorizing <strong>the</strong>m into equal number <strong>of</strong><br />

groups). Both <strong>the</strong> subject and control group were non smokers and no serious illness except<br />

asthma.<br />

Results:<br />

The desired maternal outcomes were (i) Hospital admission, (ii) past history abortion or still<br />

birth,<br />

(iii) Presence <strong>of</strong> UTI (iv) Pre-term labor (v) Pre-eclampsia (vi) IUGR (vii) Hypertension and<br />

(viii) vaginal haemorrhage (APH & PPH), (ix) maternal mortality and <strong>the</strong> fetal outcomes<br />

were (i) low birth weight (ii) pre term baby, (iii) APGAR score and<br />

(iv) fetal or neonatal mortality.<br />

The frequency <strong>of</strong> getting admission into <strong>the</strong> hospital was more in asthmatic patient than that<br />

in <strong>the</strong> non asthmatic patients (6.11% vs 2.0%) and no significant relationship was observed<br />

in between <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

The frequency <strong>of</strong> occurrence <strong>of</strong> UTI episode during pregnancy was more in asthmatic<br />

patients (30.6%) than that <strong>of</strong> non asthmatic patients (8.2%) and had a significant<br />

relationship (p.702).<br />

The episode <strong>of</strong> abortion in past with asthmatic pregnant women (10.2%) was found more in<br />

comparison to <strong>the</strong> non asthmatic pregnant women (3.1%) which had a statistical significance<br />
