are spiritually d<strong>is</strong>cerned. T<strong>here</strong>fore I approach th<strong>is</strong> sublime truth, th<strong>is</strong> celestial realm of <strong>the</strong> <strong>mind</strong> of Chr<strong>is</strong>t, with<br />
more than usual fear and trembling.<br />
"As heaven <strong>is</strong> higher than <strong>the</strong> earth," saith God, "so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than<br />
your thoughts." T<strong>here</strong>fore we cry out in our ignorance and earth-bound understanding, "W<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>is</strong>e<br />
man? W<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> scribe? W<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> debater of th<strong>is</strong> age? Has not God made fool<strong>is</strong>h <strong>the</strong> w<strong>is</strong>dom of <strong>the</strong><br />
world? For since, in <strong>the</strong> w<strong>is</strong>dom of God, <strong>the</strong> world did not know God through w<strong>is</strong>dom, it pleased God through<br />
<strong>the</strong> folly of what we preached to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek w<strong>is</strong>dom,<br />
but we preach Chr<strong>is</strong>t crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called,<br />
both Jews and Greeks, Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>the</strong> power of God and <strong>the</strong> w<strong>is</strong>dom of God. For <strong>the</strong> fool<strong>is</strong>hness of God <strong>is</strong> w<strong>is</strong>er<br />
than men, and <strong>the</strong> weakness of God <strong>is</strong> stronger than men." 1 Cor. 1:20-25. (Rev<strong>is</strong>ed Standard).<br />
Dare we <strong>the</strong>n in <strong>the</strong> light of such an admonition as th<strong>is</strong> approach God proudly d<strong>is</strong>playing our D.D.'s, our<br />
Ph.D.'s, and our L.L.B.'s? Do you know <strong>that</strong> all such <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>is</strong>dom of th<strong>is</strong> world which comes to naught? Have<br />
we never learned <strong>that</strong> <strong>the</strong> world by w<strong>is</strong>dom knew not God? 1 Cor. 1:21. Have we forgotten <strong>the</strong> exhortation of<br />
<strong>the</strong> apostle James when he said, "Not many of you should become teachers, my bro<strong>the</strong>rs, for you know <strong>that</strong><br />
we who teach will be judged with greater strictness." James 3:1. (Goodspeed). Oh <strong>that</strong> men, Chr<strong>is</strong>tian men,<br />
would humble <strong>the</strong>mselves before <strong>the</strong> feet of God and divest <strong>the</strong>mselves of all <strong>the</strong>ir pride in every form of<br />
human w<strong>is</strong>dom, confessing <strong>that</strong> <strong>the</strong>y know nothing as <strong>the</strong>y ought to know! Oh <strong>that</strong> God's children would cast<br />
aside <strong>the</strong> filthy garments of human understanding and throw away <strong>the</strong> leafy aprons fashioned from <strong>the</strong> evil tree<br />
of human knowledge <strong>that</strong> gives us man's understanding of what <strong>is</strong> good and what <strong>is</strong> evil and what <strong>is</strong> right and<br />
what <strong>is</strong> wrong! Then would God teach us H<strong>is</strong> secret w<strong>is</strong>dom, even <strong>the</strong> w<strong>is</strong>dom hidden from all ages and<br />
d<strong>is</strong>pensations but which <strong>is</strong> now being revealed to those who are wholly H<strong>is</strong>. All who would learn God's doctrine<br />
and those who would receive God's knowledge must first be weaned from <strong>the</strong> milk of human understanding<br />
and drawn from <strong>the</strong> breasts of our earthly mo<strong>the</strong>r. T<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> a natural realm and t<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> a spiritual realm. T<strong>here</strong><br />
<strong>is</strong> a w<strong>is</strong>dom from beneath and t<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> a w<strong>is</strong>dom from above. T<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> a man who <strong>is</strong> of <strong>the</strong> earth earthy and<br />
t<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> a man who <strong>is</strong> one <strong>mind</strong> with <strong>the</strong> Lord from heaven.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> first two chapters of Paul's first ep<strong>is</strong>tle to <strong>the</strong> Corinthians <strong>the</strong> apostle unfolds a wealth of truth concerning<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>mind</strong>. I think I am right in saying <strong>that</strong> Paul clearly shows <strong>that</strong> all conditions whe<strong>the</strong>r good or bad extant<br />
among us are <strong>the</strong> product of <strong>the</strong> <strong>mind</strong>. Whe<strong>the</strong>r those conditions be wars, fightings, div<strong>is</strong>ions, or blessed<br />
harmony and peace, all stem from <strong>the</strong> <strong>mind</strong>. The point <strong>that</strong> I w<strong>is</strong>h to make very clear <strong>is</strong> simply th<strong>is</strong>: Three kinds<br />
of <strong>mind</strong>s are clearly shown in scripture. T<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> no possible way of avoiding th<strong>is</strong> conclusion. T<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
natural <strong>mind</strong>, which possesses <strong>the</strong> natural man. It <strong>is</strong> h<strong>is</strong> natural unregenerate <strong>mind</strong> <strong>that</strong> keeps him a natural<br />
man. The natural <strong>mind</strong> cannot possibly receive <strong>the</strong> things of God. 1 Cor. 2:14. Everything <strong>that</strong> man does <strong>is</strong><br />
totally in <strong>the</strong> natural. He <strong>is</strong> of <strong>the</strong> earth earthy. He thinks in <strong>the</strong> natural realm, talks in <strong>the</strong> natural realm,<br />
understands only in <strong>the</strong> natural realm. H<strong>is</strong> conversation may be very interesting, he may be very well learned,<br />
well versed and very clever after th<strong>is</strong> present age, but all h<strong>is</strong> understanding <strong>is</strong> in th<strong>is</strong> earthly realm and<br />
hermetically sealed in <strong>the</strong> natural. The simplest of spiritual truths are far over h<strong>is</strong> head. In all probability he has<br />
never once heard <strong>the</strong> call of God in any way, much less responded to it. He <strong>is</strong> a natural man with a natural<br />
<strong>mind</strong>. Living in a natural world, he sees, hears, and understands only what <strong>is</strong> natural. As <strong>the</strong> ears of <strong>the</strong> deaf<br />
are fast closed to every beautiful sound - <strong>the</strong> singing of <strong>the</strong> birds, <strong>the</strong> voices of loved ones, <strong>the</strong> roaring of <strong>the</strong><br />
surf - so h<strong>is</strong> ears are closed to all <strong>that</strong> <strong>is</strong> spiritual and none but God can ever open <strong>the</strong>m. As <strong>the</strong> eyes of <strong>the</strong><br />
blind are fast closed to <strong>the</strong> beauties of <strong>the</strong> sunset, <strong>the</strong> magnificence of <strong>the</strong> mountains and <strong>the</strong> glory of <strong>the</strong> hills,<br />
so h<strong>is</strong> eyes see not any spiritual thing, because he <strong>is</strong> a natural man with a natural <strong>mind</strong>, totally insensitive to<br />
<strong>the</strong> wonders of <strong>that</strong> heavenly realm <strong>that</strong> <strong>is</strong> high as heaven <strong>is</strong> high above <strong>the</strong> earth. A man cannot be spiritual<br />
and natural at <strong>the</strong> same time.<br />
The second <strong>mind</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> carnal <strong>mind</strong>. The carnal <strong>mind</strong> <strong>is</strong> described in scripture as being <strong>the</strong> enemy of God.<br />
Rom. 8:7. It <strong>is</strong> not subject to <strong>the</strong> law of God, nei<strong>the</strong>r indeed can be, so <strong>that</strong> <strong>the</strong>y who are in <strong>the</strong> flesh cannot<br />
please God. Those last words, in <strong>the</strong> flesh, show us exactly what <strong>the</strong> carnal <strong>mind</strong> <strong>is</strong>. Our word carnal comes<br />
from <strong>the</strong> Latin word carni. Carni means flesh. The only part of man <strong>that</strong> <strong>is</strong> made of flesh <strong>is</strong> h<strong>is</strong> body. The<br />
physical body <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> flesh. The carnal <strong>mind</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> fleshly <strong>mind</strong>. The fleshly <strong>mind</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>mind</strong> <strong>that</strong> <strong>is</strong> always<br />
concerned about <strong>the</strong> welfare of <strong>the</strong> human body and how to cater to its passions - eating, drinking, hearing,<br />
seeing, smelling, and feeling. It <strong>is</strong> nothing more or less than th<strong>is</strong>. It <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> body <strong>that</strong> stands in <strong>the</strong> way of all<br />
spiritual progress. The flesh <strong>is</strong> such a deceiver <strong>that</strong> its true identity was hidden from God's people for centuries,<br />
