Students with Learning or
Mobility Difficulties
Depending on which Local
Education Authority Area you
are resident in, the level of
support can vary. Normally
up to the age of 19 support
will be offered but this will
take into account:
• the nature of the learning or
mobility difficulty
• whether the student had
a statement of special
educational needs
• the distance that has to be
travelled
• the course or programme of
studies to be undertaken
• and the opportunities for the
student to be accompanied
or supported to be able to
travel independently.
Please initially contact your
LEA for further information.
Ticket Options
If you receive a season
ticket or bus pass from your
education authority, school
or college and you rely upon
public transport during the
evening, weekends or in the
holidays it is worth enquiring
about a fare card. Most local
bus and train companies offer
an ID/fare/student card either
free or for a small charge
which allow you to travel at
reduced rates during these
times.
If you don’t receive travel
support the consider the
following
• how often during the week
do you have to travel?
• are the following options
available rather than a single
fare ?
– daily return fare ?
– zonal ticket (which allows
you to travel within a zone
for any period from a day up
to a year)
– season ticket (which allows
you to travel between
named stops). Normally the
minimum period for a season
ticket is a month and the
maximum a year.
– scholars ticket which is
similar to a season ticket but
entitlement dates follow the
academic terms.
– fare/ID card which allows
you to travel after a certain
time of the day, in the
evening, at weekends and
during academic holidays at
reduced cost.
Work out what is best for you,
it may be worth saving up to
buy a longer period ticket for
six or nine months because
on a daily basis you will
reduce you fare cost quite
significantly. Alternatively
if you use the bus or train a
lot just not for travelling to
school or college it might be
worth considering a zonal
ticket or a fare/ID/student
card alongside a season ticket.
What if I can’t access public
transport?
If you have difficulty in
getting to public transport
