Diocese Bids Farewell to Fr. Tarbell
It is with great sadness that Bishop Michael
Vono announces the passing of our brother
and fellow Priest, The Rev. Canon Al Tarbell.
Canon Tarbell entered the
heavenly kingdom one day
shy of his103rd birthday.
He rejoices in the company
of Angels and held in the
loving arms of Christ. As
we remember his life and
ministry, please keep his
niece Caroline in your
prayers.
Fr. Tarbell was born in
Bangor, Maine, on December
26, 1909, and lived into
the promise of the 20th Century, following
three career paths. His first career was in
live theater and acting. His second career in
military intelligence followed the outbreak
of World War II, and eventually led to his
assignment at Sandia Base, Albuquerque.
In 1954 while at Sandia, he was recruited
by the Episcopal chaplain to help organize
a church in the Northeast
Heights. His efforts and those
of his wife, Mabelle, who
played the organ, led him to
follow a call to ministry. He
received his Master of Divinity
from General Theological
Seminary in New York, and
returned to Albuquerque to the
Cathedral of St. John. He later
founded St. Aidan’s Episcopal
Church (now St. Mary’s) in the
Northeast Heights.
Fr. Tarbell retired in 1978, and remained
active at the Cathedral of St. John until recent
years. Services for Fr. Tarbell were held at 1
p.m. Sunday, December 30, at the Cathedral
of St. John.
