TO PRESERVE, PROTECT & PROVIDE
These are exciting times for the Lions Pride Campaign and the
Wisconsin Lions Foundation. The process of creating a new non-profit
corporation that will be known as The Lions Pride Endowment Fund, Inc.
is underway. The new corporation will be fully in place operationally
effective January 1, 2012.
Chairman Dewey Carl and the Pride staff are pleased and have encouraged this development for some
time. As noted by Wisconsin Lions Foundation’s Immediate Past President Dave Kaiser, “My fellow
Directors and I strongly believe that this restructuring [of the Lions Pride Endowment Fund and
Birch-Sturm Fund] into separate 501(c)3 non-profit corporations is in the best interest of the Lions of
Wisconsin.
“This decision was made after many months of research and planning and was highly recommended by
the WLF Long Range Planning Committee (two members of that committee are Past International
Directors that have professional financial backgrounds to their credit), our Auditors at Kerber, Rose &
Associates and two attorneys from the highly-regarded Milwaukee Law Firm of Whyte, Hirschboeck,
Dudek S.C.”
Chairman Dewey notes that, "The sole purpose of Lions Pride Endowment Fund remains the same: to
preserve, protect and provide significant financial support for the continuation of all WLF statewide
projects, Today’s Help...Tomorrow’s Hope." While separate corporate entities, all parties will always
share common interest in these projects and those they serve. Because of this special relationship,
opportunities for cooperative and collaborative efforts will serve the interests of both the WLF and Lions
Pride.
Continuity of Pride strategies and plans are essential, including those established by our Investment
Board. To that end it is most gratifying that all Investment Board members have chosen to continue to
serve on The Lions Pride Endowment Fund, Inc. Board of Directors as we move forward, with two
additions: DG Rick Koch, serving as the Council Representative on the Board and PDG Stan Carlson
(PDG Stan was a member of the original Pride Steering Committee).
For filing purposes the following Investment Board Members were slotted into the following positions:
Corporate CEO/President, DuWayne Carl; Vice President, John Suby; Secretary, Greg Pryor; Treasurer,
Mike Lisle. In the future, positions will be filled according to the By-Laws of the Lions Pride Endowment
Fund, Inc.
What is the impact of forming the new Lions Pride Endowment Fund, Inc.? First and foremost, the
mission of Lions Pride to provide financial support for all the WLF projects remains unchanged. What
does change, however, is that management is provided at the direction of an independent and
dedicated Board of Directors--both Lions and Non-Lion members--each bringing in-depth business,
finance, accounting, non-profit or other professional experience perspectives to bear on growing the
Lions Pride Endowment Fund.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS CANDIDATE SELECTION
LIONS PRIDE ENDOWMENT FUND, INC.
To provide an effective, fiduciary and responsible Board Lions Pride is looking for qualified candidates who may be interested in serving
on our Board in the future. Maintaining a list of qualified candidates from throughout the State is important to maintain consistent
management and leadership during times of natural attrition. As a Lions Pride Donor, your thoughtful nomination of qualified prospective
members for the Lions Pride Endowment Fund Inc. Board of Directors is greatly appreciated.
For this position, qualification is best represented by business or professional expertise or non-profit experience outside of Lions. Lion
seniority or reward for service should not be considerations for prospective Lions Pride Endowment Fund Board, Inc. members.
Candidates may include non-Lions as well as Lions.
Perspectives of greatest value to the Pride organization are likely to come from those with successful experience and/or qualifications
along these lines:
• Professionals: accounting/finance, financial planning, wealth management, estate law
• Business: executives, enterprise managers, practice managers, successful entrepreneurs
• Non-profit management or fundraising experience
• Prior charity, association or non-profit Board of Directors experience
Prospective Lions Pride Endowment Fund, Inc. Board members must also have the personal financial resources to contribute monetarily
to the Endowment Fund.
If you are interested or know someone who may be interested in serving on the Lions Pride Board, contact the Lions Pride Office at
715-677-7000 or email prideoffice@lionspride.org to request a nomination form.
THE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE. . .
As you look over this newsletter, three current considerations about the Lions Pride
Endowment Fund are especially noteworthy.
The first has to do with the wonderfully long list of those who have contributed
financially to our cause. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
The second has to do with our becoming a separate non-profit organization. Our
mission remains: to supply financial support for the continuation of all WLF Statewide
Projects...Today’s Help, Tomorrow’s Hope.
The third has to do with meeting our target of achieving a $25 million Endowment Fund. While Pride
has worked hard, the ups and downs of the economy and the markets have been challenging.
Currently, we have some $6.3 million in total assets, including outstanding pledges and deferred gifts.
Looking to the future, we must first look to the needs of our families. But then we also need to look at
the future of the WLF and its projects; whether it is Camp, the Eye Glass Recycling Center, Diabetes
Awareness or any of the other projects. Who can say that tomorrow is not as important as today?
In the present financial climate this is ideal time to look more to the future through a deferred gift.
Deferred gifting is the perfect way to help today without changing your current financial status.
There are many ways to accomplish deferred giving. Here are some options/suggestions:

Designate a specific bequest in your will or revocable trust for a specific amount to the Lions
Pride Endowment Fund.
Leave a bequest of a specific piece of real estate designated in your will or revocable trust to
the Lions Pride Endowment Fund.
Make a Beneficiary designation tied to a life insurance policy, IRA, and/or other retirement
account (either a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the asset) to the Lions Pride
Endowment Fund.
Have a specific stock or mutual fund that has done very well that has a very low basis? A
direct gift to the Lions Pride Endowment Fund will enable not having to report a gain on the
sale of stock or mutual fund by the donor. This would occur, not as much as a gift at time of
death, but while a donor is living. This can be a great tax planning tool that benefits both
you, the donor, and the Lions Pride Endowment Fund.
If you are 70½ you can give an IRA Rollover Gift. You may designate Lions Pride Endowment
Fund as the recipient of your gift. Both you and your spouse may designate up to $100,000
before the end of 2011. This distribution from your IRA will not count in your current
income, thereby giving you the advantages of a 100% charitable contribution without
itemizing your deduction.
All of these suggestions are easy ways to accomplish your charitable purpose – either by changing or
adding a beneficiary designation with your estate planner or life insurance agent, or by contacting the
plan administrator of your retirement account and obtaining a change in beneficiary form to affect the
change.
Contact the Pride office for a copy of our “Safari Legacy” brochure. It provides more detail about
deferred giving options and can also be useful in your planning process.
Please keep in mind the importance to the Lions Pride Endowment Fund of sharing the fact of your
deferred gift/plan with the Pride office so that it can be properly reflected in our records and to ensure
proper recognition.
Today’s Help, Tomorrow’s Hope,
EVOLUTION OF FRIENDSHIP
What began with a visit to Lions Camp by two members of the Fond du Lac
Open Road Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) Chapter in 2008 has evolved into
an annual fundraiser supporting Lions Pride, called the Friendship 100. This
is one of two annual fundraisers for Lions Pride, both specifically geared to
raising funds from predominantly non-Lion donors.
The Annual Friendship 100 is aptly named because the ride from Open Road
Harley-Davidson in Fond du Lac to the front door of the Pride Office on the
grounds of Lions Camp is approximately 100 miles. In addition, each rider
and passenger must make a minimum donation of $100 in order to participate.
This year's group rumbled into Camp just before the campers' lunchtime. Pride
President Dewey Carl welcomed the group and expressed his appreciation to them
for choosing to adopt Lions Pride as one of the group's personal causes. Open Road
Harley Davidson's Sales Manager, Mike Arnold, presented Pride President Dewey Carl
and Executive Director Geri Schlender with just over $2,200 in donations for Lions
Pride. Each rider was given a custom designed pin commemorating the event and
their participation.
Starting with a tour of the health lodge, provided
by Lion Lynette Ender, long-time volunteer nurse
and wife of WLF PP Eric Ender, the group got to
witness the influx of campers approaching the
health lodge for their noon medications. The
expertise and efficiency of the process impressed
the group.
Following an "al fresco"
lunch beneath the shade
trees in front of the Pride
Office, the group embarked on a wagon ride tour of the Camp. Newcomers were
awed by the scope of the property and the variety of facilities and activities
provided to the campers, including the climbing tower, archery and nature center.
As a matter of fact, one rider who attended last year's ride was so moved, he
brought a deer hide, all tanned and ready to go, as a gift to the Camp's nature
center, graciously accepted by Camp Operations Manager, Andrea Yenter.
The visit ended with a stop at the water front as
the campers were enjoying the warm sunny day
both on and in the water. Canoes, kayaks, peddle boats and the like
were scattered around the lake while splashing and giggling could be
heard from quite a distance as the group
approached the water front and
swimming areas.
As departure time drew near; the
riders sadly made their goodbyes,
but with happy hearts knowing
their personal donations are making a decided difference in the
lives of some very special children. They then saddled up for the
100 mile journey back to Fond du Lac vowing to return next year
and to bring others along on the 3 rd Annual Friendship 100 ride.

4th Annual Lions Pride Shoot
The Annual Lions Pride Sporting Clays Fundraiser continues to be a "bang up" event. Though the
weather was cloudy and a bit cool for this year’s 4th Annual Shoot, it did not deter shooters and
volunteers from having a GREAT time. Among this year's highlights were 25 NEW shooters and
our first ALL women's team, who aptly donned hats with pink letters that read "Girls with Guns."
The shooters, dinner guests and volunteers enjoyed a wonderful Pork
Porterhouse topped with sautéed mushrooms. One shooter commented,
"The pork chop is as big as the plate!" Following dinner, the live auction had some new, unique and
interesting items including a Nook, Hand-Carved Duck Decoys, Hot Air Balloon Rides and even tickets
to a ZZ Top Concert.
The success of this fundraiser would not be possible without our Sponsors and Prize Donors, 21 of
the 32 are non-Lions who support Lions Pride. Equally important is the help of our Lion, Lioness and
non-Lion volunteers; this year sharing over 234 combined hours of their time for the Pride Shoot.
If you would like to see more pictures from this year's shoot as well as
pictures from past shoots, they are available on line. To take a peek at
the fun visit the Lions Pride website www.lionspride.org then click on the News, Views and Events
tab and select Photo Galleries, or "Like" us on Facebook to view our albums there.
The 5th Annual Lions Pride Shoot will be held Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Milford Hills in Johnson
Creek. Mark your calendar; round up a team, volunteer, plan on joining us!
Lions Camp, A Parents Perspective
By Kevin McPherson, Madison West Lions Club Member & Lions Pride Board Member
“Dad, that is still my favorite camp!” my 19 year-old daughter Kayla exclaimed as we pulled away from Wisconsin Lions Camp
in August. Kayla is quite an expert on camping for children and young adults with special needs in Wisconsin having attended
other camps in the state and in Iowa.
Kayla is a confident camper thanks, in large part, to Wisconsin Lions Camp her first away-from-home camp experience in the
summer of 2005. Taking the first step isn’t easy for either the camper or the parents. I remember the butterflies we felt
signing Kayla up for Lions Camp that first year. We had recently moved to Madison from out of state and heard from other
parents how great the experience was at Lions Camp. We looked into Lions Camp and were amazed to find it was offered at
no cost. We weren’t totally convinced the time was right to send Kayla away for a whole week, so we signed up for a Family
Camp Weekend to check it out. Our family had a blast and we still talk about our epic canoe races. We found the setting
gorgeous, the facility top-notch, the food better than expected and a caring staff. We brought Kayla back for her week of
camp in June certain she would have a great time.
Lions Camp changed our lives. Kayla came back from that first week at Camp full of stories, talking about her counselors, the
cook-outs, the mud pit and the dance. She seemed to carry herself a little differently, too. She came home tired but with a
new found confidence in tackling life more independently. I decided to look into joining a Lions club to support the great
organization that had done so much for kids like Kayla; I did just that, joining the Madison West Lions Club.
The past six years have flown by. Kayla has gone from one week of camp to four, only one at Lions Camp since that is the
maximum allowed each year. Her independence has increased steadily; she has a regular job at the Middleton High School
pool, enjoys participating in Special Olympics and spending time with her friends. The last two years Kayla has been eligible
to attend Young Adult Week at Lions Camp but it is in high demand so a lottery is held and a camper has about a 1 in 3
chance to get a spot. We were all disappointed last year when Kayla’s name was not selected and VERY excited this year
when it was, making her one of the lucky ones.
Lions Camp means so much to the kids and young adults who attend and it means a great deal to their families too. While
the campers have fun, learn skills and practice independence, their parents enjoy a brief respite from the demands that
having a child with special needs place on day-to-day living. Independence for children with special needs is something
parents need to prepare for and the practice you get from even a week at camp is a great first step.
