HAVELLS-SYLVANIA LIGHTS THE AGES AT M-SHED
Museums and galleries across the country are finding new ways to save both money and
energy whilst preserving their historic artefacts. The M Shed Museum in Bristol, an exciting
new museum showcasing the history and culture of the city, features over 800 Havells-
Sylvania Concord Beacon LED and Concord Continuum fixtures in a lighting scheme which
discreetly blends into the museum’s interior while showcasing the work on display.
Opened in 2011, M Shed sits proudly on Bristol’s historic harbourside as a modern flagship
on the rich historic culture of the city. The museum tells the history of Bristol through the
stories of people who have helped to shape it.
Exploring the city’s progression from
prehistoric times to the 21 st century, the museum uses rich collections of objects, arts and
archives to bring the stories to life.
The lighting plays a huge role in showcasing the exhibits, as David Hurst at Full-On Lighting
Design relates: “After testing the products, the museum selected Concord LED luminaires as
the colour rendering index and low radiation was perfect for best displaying the artwork and
ensuring that fading was prevented. The Concord Beacon LED 3000K was used as spotlights for
the smaller paintings and throughout specific areas in the museum and chosen due to its long
life span, low heat output and good lighting temperature.”
It is not just in the gallery that Havells-Sylvania products have been used; the Concord
Continuum illuminates the entire museum and all public spaces including the gallery, the
foyers, the education room and the dockside café. “The Museum is extremely impressed with
the new lighting design and the versatility that has come from the Havells-Sylvania products”
adds David. “It fulfils all their objectives and meets the brief whilst energy efficient options such
as the Muse have helped cut the cost of lighting bills and lowered energy consumption. The
work has been a huge success and the museum is looking forward to the future.”
The Concord Beacon LED is a high output, high efficiency spotlight which uses a cutting-edge
cooling fin design to maximise thermal management and reduce LED junction temperature.
The Beacon LED provides all the benefits of LED technology, no UV / IR radiation, 50,000
hours life, maintenance free applications and a considerable reduction in energy
consumption over traditional light sources such as halogen. Beacon LED is available in warm
3000K and neutral 4000K CCT with a high colour rendering index, typical Ra92 incorporating
a discrete on board dimmer providing control from 100% to 0%, essential requirements for
museums, galleries and high-end retail applications. The contemporary, compact all die-cast
design is available in 15˚ spot or 30˚ flood options.
Continuum offers a clean, simple lighting system with continuous, highly uniform lines of
light across walls and ceilings. This highly versatile lighting tool can be recessed, semirecessed,
and surface-mounted or suspended, either vertically or horizontally and T5 battens
with 100mm staggered lamp holders provide a perfect clean line of light with no shadows
cast when two lamps cross. Continuum offers a complete range of high efficiency and high
output T5 lamp options and profiles are supplied pre-cut in modular lengths complete with
Satine opal diffusers, offering superb light diffusion.
