• Chisholm's New Business Dean The new Dean ofthe David Syme Business School at Chisholm, one of the biggest and most respected Business Schools in Australia, believes he is well experienced to take advantage of the new emphasis on industry needs in the education world.. Mr Peter Cha ndler 105 well-known as a ma rketi ng expert both in Australia and overseas, and he has had co nsiderable indu stry experience of his own. His background is we ll suited to the post-D awkins e ra of d ucation, with co nsultancy to industry of all kinds since 1971, as well as co nsiderable teaching experience. Peter is the third permanent Dean of David Syme since the School's inception in 1973. The School, which is w ide ly res pected for its Marketing, Accounting, Managem ent and Banking & Finance Departments and co urses, has traditi onally had a strong involvement w ith industry and with head s of industry as Visiting Retail Fellows and members of the course accred itation boards. In addition, ther e is sponsorship of various as pects of the School's activities : l~ld er s IXL sup po rt the Fellowship in gribusine ss, and a number of other major companies (Shell, IBM, etc .) have mad e co ntributions to the ed ucation o f high quality gradua tes to serve the needs of the market place. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHANGE Peter be lieves the School's op portunities lie in identifying and building on its fun ctional stre ngths. He sees his role in res ponding to the cha llenge to find ways to enha nce these strengt hs, and hopes to e ncourage research and developme nt in the Scho ol, seeing man y opportunities to co-ope rate w ith indu stry , 'The very process of att racting nongovernme nt funding w ill ultimately ma ke the School more relevant and responsive to the ne eds of industrial and co mmercial secto rs,' he said. 'What we 're on about is attrac ting high calibre students and ens uring that the educ ational processe s they und ert ake at the School equip them as high performers in the bu siness world . Industrial and comme rcial funding will ass ist us to ens ure that stude nts gain an ap propriate educationa l input.' Pete r has seen all as pects of the growt h of the School -w hen he first jo ined in 1971, the then Head of Business, Noel Hu ggan , encourag ed him not to co me to the campus except whe n he wa s lecturing. 'There was no ph one apa rt from the Head o f Department's, and the switchboard was so bad one had to d ial for 20 minutes just to get a line o ut' , be sa id. He is sa ng uine abo ut the proposals for radical cha nge in the ed ucatio n wo rld. 'I think that because the School has alw ays had an ap plied per spective , it is quite well positioned to take adva ntage of the externa l environme nt that is demanding accountab ility of education. Peter matri cul ated at Melbourne High and ga ine d his Bachelor of Comme rce from the University of Melbourne . He has studied at Harvard, completed an Australian Institute of Exp ort diploma , and gained his Masters in Mark eting at the University o f Lancaster (With distinction) in 1977 . He has be en involved in numerou s consultancy projects , including marketing strategies for Aussat, the Australian Dairy Corpo ration, the Australian Tourist Commission, ICI, Dulux Paints, CSR Suga r, Ansett , and the Australi an Wheat Board. In addition, he has run training programs for man y organisations , including the Pratt Group, Elders IXL, Australi a Post, Te lecom, CrG, ICI, CSR, the State Bank, Fibrernak ers, the University of Melbourne Gradua te School of Business Administration, and the Australian Administrative Staff CoJlege . Peter is a co-author of the bestse lling mark eting text in Australia, Marketing in A ustra lia, published by Prentice-Hall in 1983 . In 1987, he became Presid ent of the Marketing Associ ation of Australi a and New Zeala nd .
