MARIAN FUND Annual Phonathon 2013 The 2013 Marian Catholic Phonathon might be remembered for interruptions by two snow storms and an unexpected school holiday to celebrate the Women’s Basketball State Championship. However, the successful event will go down in history as one that raised more than $55,000 in pledges for the Marian Fund with more “decision” gifts received each day and reaching our goal of $60,000. Chaired by current parents Kathy and Mike Manno and Dan and Marianne Gregorovic, the Parent Phonathon connected current and past parents. A special thank you to Felicia Dupczak ’04 and Phil Werner ’11 who assisted the 116 student volunteers in the school library as they called alumni over three sessions. During the Phonathon, volunteers reached out to more than 12,000 members of the Marian Catholic community throughout the United States. “This event would not be a success if it weren’t for our many volunteers, current parents, past parents, alumni, and friends,” said Pat Trebe, Annual Programs Manager and Phonathon Manager. “The sessions are fun and productive, but it’s the people who volunteer who truly make it special. And, of course, the hundreds of people who ‘answered the call’ make this one of the school’s major fundraisers.” Those we were unable to reach, and those not available when our phonathoners called, still have an opportunity to participate. ENHANCED TECHNOLOGY/MEDIA CENTER The Next Generation Director of Networks, Mike Carlson ’91, teaching Java Programming software to Justin Avant ’14 Paige Crawford ’12, Brittany Maloney ’13, Alexanna Cox ’13, James Kangethe ’13, and Alanna Marston ’12 eager to learn industry standard software “I got started in programing with (teacher) Doc McCaughey ’81 in 2004-2005 at Marian, and at that time I saw what was becoming available in the field and it was really exciting. Now, I’m excited for the school as we move forward with all the technology the school has to offer. It is so great to see that momentum, and I am looking forward to seeing where we can go together.” Matt Gornick ’06, Co-founder, OrangeQC Member, 2011 MCHS Tech Plan Committee Digital Photography students, Robert Hansen ’13 and Catherine-Clair Hester ’13, using Adobe Photoshop to edit their work Robert Hansen ’13 and Catherine-Clair Hester ’13 explore filming techniques in the MCHS Sound Room The Technology/Media Center is fundamental to Marian Catholic’s innovative curriculum offering students the skills needed to be successful in present and future educational endeavors as they build the foundation for successful career paths. JAVA PROGRAMMING This course is designed for students with or without programming experience who wish to learn programming techniques. Students will learn Java and explore Java variants. Lab work is required. Some outside lab work is expected. “I plan to be a computer scientist. I took this class to get a touch of what computer science is like since I plan to major in it in college. I am very excited about it because this is the backbone of computer applications and we are being taught it here at Marian.” Michael Millsaps ’14 INTRO TO VIDEO EDITING Intro to Video Editing is a semester course which introduces students to the basics of video editing. Students develop camera skills, learn editing processes, and investigate the principles of video documentation and elements of production. Students learn to observe, to express themselves nonverbally, and to analytically solve problems by processing information visually. This course will use Apple’s iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, iDVD, and program suites. “I heard from previous students that Intro to Video Editing was a great class and I always had an interest in editing videos. Now I am learning the basics and techniques which I find very exciting.” Juilian Lambert ’12 DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Digital Photography is a semester course which introduces students to the basics of digital photography. Students develop camera skills, learn darkroom processes, and investigate the principles of art and elements of design. Students learn to observe, to express themselves nonverbally, and to analytically solve problems by processing information visually. This course will use Apple’s iPhoto, Picasa, or Paint Pro programs suites. “I chose this class because of my interest in photography. The most exciting thing to me about this class is producing pictures and editing them to the point where they look professional and obtain a certain realness.” Chelsea Tayui ’12 5
