INTRODUCTION
DETERMINE THE CORRECT TYPE OF CHAIN
ESTIMATE THE MAXIMUM LOAD REQUIRED
CHAINS
Welded Chain
Welded chain is formed by a single loop of
material closed by a single weld. It is commonly
used for load bearing and securing applications,
but also has a number of specialist variants, such
as hardened security chain, stainless steel and
decorative spiked chain.
Unwelded Chain
Unwelded chain has a lower load capacity than
welded chain and is usually used for lighter
applications. Each link is held closed by the
strength of the material alone.
Polyethylene Chain
Plastic chain is available in a number of styles and
colours and is usually used for decorative
applications.
Chain Assemblies
These are manufactured for specific applications
such as animal teathers
MAXIMUM RECOMMENDED LOAD . MRL
Wire Diameter
The Maximum Recommended Load is the maximum load in Kg
which may be applied in direct tension to the chain when in use. It is
important not to exceed the specified loads which are only applicable
when the chain is undamaged and untwisted.
LONG LINK OR SHORT LINK CHAIN?
Load
For small chain sizes, short link chain will hold
heavier loads than long link. For larger chain sizes
(greater than 6mm) the load capacity is the same
Welded Chain
USES
Weight
Short link chain is approximately 20% heavier
than long link
ZINC PLATED *** OUTDOOR OR INDOOR RETAINING / LOAD BEARING / DECORATIVE
BLACK ENAMELLED ** OUTDOOR OR INDOOR RETAINING / DECORATIVE
CHROME PLATED * OUTDOOR OR INDOOR RETAINING / DECORATIVE
Flexibility
Short link chain is more flexible, coils easier and is
more free running
BRASS PLATED * INDOOR DECORATIVE
Economy
Long link chain is less expensive that short link, as
short link chain contains more material and has
more welds per metre.
