The Grevy’s zebra EEP undertook a survey together with the Hartmann’s mountain zebra EEP among their member
institutions.
Survey of anaesthesia, vaccination and deworming treatment in captive Hartmann’s mountain zebra, Equus
zebra hartmannae, and Grevy’s zebra, Equus grevyi

The study aims to collect information about anaesthetic protocols and side effects related to anaesthesia in both
species within the different member institutions of the Grevy’s zebra and Hartmann’s mountain zebra EEPs. The
second part of the questionnaire looked into prophylactic measures: vaccination and de-worming treatments, used in
different organisations/countries.
The results should be useful for all EEP participants as they can advise on the pros and cons of different methods
when dealing with anaesthesia of prophylactic treatment.
So far only preliminary results are available which you can find below.
Analysis of anaesthetic protocols showed that:
31.4% of all GZ institutions use premedication, for which 45% used detomidine.
Over 50% of anaesthesia treatments used are a simple combination of etorphine and acepromazine (Immobilon ®)
Side effects for Grevy’s zebras
Excitation, head pressing, ataxia, muscular rigidity and tremors � often encountered with LA Immobilon®
