2003/2004 Award Recipients Each year the Foundation honors both individuals and organizations that have provided extraordinary support for our mission. Below is a list of the 2003/2004 award recipients. COMMITMENT TO SIGHT AWARD The Foundation’s Commitment to Sight Award has been established in order to honor those who have made an ongoing commitment to the Foundation’s mission. The award is a tribute to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated dedicated efforts and advocacy for improving eye care for those at greatest risk of eye disease. BARBARA B. FLEMING, MD, PHD Barbara B. Fleming, MD, PhD, senior clinical advisor, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), was the first recipient of the Foundation’s Commitment to Sight award for her outstanding personal commitment toward the preservation of sight. ACADEMY FOUNDATION AWARD RECIPIENTS GEORGE E. GARCIA, MD Dr. Garcia provided for a gift through his estate to the Foundation. In doing so, Dr. Garcia became a charter member of The Legacy Society. The Legacy Society is composed of extraordinary individuals who support the educational work of the Academy or the mission of the Foundation by including either of them in a planned gift, such as a will or a trust. ERNEST HERMAN Mr. Herman supported Resident Education by contributing a most generous gift of $100,000. This gift exemplifies Mr. Herman’s genuine commitment to improving eye care for the patients we serve. THE INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE MISSION The Foundation and its Advisory Board recognized The International Assistance Mission for their tremendous work in the eye care field. This organization has been the primary provider of medical and surgical eye care in Afghanistan for 37 years. ALCON For years ALCON has been supportive of the Foundation through a variety of sponsorships providing support for the Academy’s Ethics program, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Screening program, the National Medical Association Eye Screening program and the “Phacoemulsification-35 Years Later” symposium during its 2003 Annual Meeting. In addition, ALCON is a member of the Foundation’s Corporate Advisory Council at the Benefactor level. ALLERGAN, INC. Allergan provides support for clinical education with a two-year, $150,000 grant for the Academy’s online Education Resource Center and for its support of the Young Ophthalmologists half-day program, the Joint Meeting and a variety of other Academy educational products. The Allergan Foundation recently awarded a $7,500 grant for public service to the Foundation. Allergan also has been a Benefactor of the Foundation’s Corporate Advisory Council. KNIGHTS TEMPLAR EYE FOUNDATION, INC. The Knights Templar Eye Foundation has been a long-standing partner in supporting EyeCare America’s national public service programs and has contributed $2 million to its programs. Their contributions to the Seniors EyeCare Program have enabled us to serve hundreds of thousands of people and reach millions more each year with our messages about eye health and blindness prevention. We could not have achieved so much without the continued support and involvement of the Knights. PFIZER OPHTHALMICS Pfizer Ophthalmics has been a valued contributor to Foundation programs for many years. They are a current sponsor of EyeCare America’s Glaucoma EyeCare Program, providing an annual commitment of $500,000 over the last three years. We are grateful to Pfizer for renewing their commitment with another three-year grant of $1.5 million. Pfizer Ophthalmics also renewed its support of the Academy’s Young Ophthalmologists program and is also a Benefactor member of the Foundation’s Corporate Advisory Council. RETINA RESEARCH FOUNDATION The Retina Research Foundation has provided over $1 million to the Foundation throughout the years. Last year, the organization provided us with a gift of $100,000 toward ophthalmic education.
