NBA basketball<br />
star opens<br />
academy at<br />
University<br />
<strong>The</strong> University of <strong>Bolt</strong>on has<br />
a new basketball academy on<br />
campus – with its sights set on<br />
professional status.<br />
<strong>The</strong> former American basketball star<br />
and now coach, Malcolm Leak, is<br />
putting his player-students through<br />
their paces – seven days a week,<br />
with twice-a-day training sessions.<br />
And Malcolm’s goal is to have a<br />
professional basketball team for<br />
<strong>Bolt</strong>on in two years.<br />
Malcolm is focused on seeing his<br />
team excel academically as well as<br />
in their chosen sport: ‘I want to<br />
know my players are working as hard<br />
at their studies as they do at their<br />
game,’ said Malcolm. ‘If they are not<br />
pushing to do their best on their courses,<br />
they won’t make the first-team cut.’<br />
Malcolm played in the National Basketball<br />
Association (NBA) for the Los Angeles<br />
Clippers before going on to play around<br />
the world – from Australia to Brazil. He<br />
came to the UK, playing in London, Leicester<br />
and Newcastle before moving into coaching.<br />
