L’Opera
Vol Au Vent De La Mer
Seafood Stew in a Puff Pastry
A baked to perfection light
Puff Pastry busting with fresh
jumbo shrimp, large succulent
scallops, mussels and lobster.
All topped with an incredible
lobster sauce, served on a bed
of fresh green beans and
acompanied by carrots, potatos
and snow peas.
This entree is best when
enjoyed with a bottle of White
Meursault
As luck
would have it,
dining at some of
the areas best restaurants, in addition to
discovering some of the best kept
secrets, is an advantage of being a food
writer. Having dined at L'Opera recently
has reminded me of how lucky I am
once again.
From the moment we entered the
bistro, I felt we were in store for a
wonderful culinary experience. We were
not disappointed. We were approached
by a lovely host named Amy, who
seated us in a very private booth, which
instantaneously put us in a cozy,
romantic mood. The decor was tastefully
thought through. The use of dark woods,
brick, and "Gold Leaf", made you feel
you truly were dining at a brasserie in
the center of Paris.
After being seated, we were
greeted by our server, Seth, a young
epicurean willing to do whatever
it took to make our experience a
memorable one.
To start off we were given some
wonderful Artisan bread, with a pungent
black olive tapanade. This would help
with the choice of wine we selected,
a Laboure-Roi Poullie Fousie (2003).
This light, crisp wine was a wonderful
selection that would compliment our
choice of appetizer and salad. We
chose a classic escargot with a garlicherb
butter, and a frisee salad with
beets, walnuts, blue cheese, and green
apple. Both items were prepared and
presented tastefully. The frisee salad
was exceptional.
Our choice for entrees was a

Filet de Boeuf Sauce Choron
(Filet Mignon with a Choron sauce)
Chef Joe Coletto
difficult decision. With seafood choices
such as Dover sole, grouper, snapper,
and scallops, we decided to select a Vol
au Vent de la mer, (seafood stew in puff
pastry). This delectable entree consisting
of puff pastry filled with lobster, shrimp,
and scallops was expertly prepared, and
extremely flavorful.
Our second selection, a delicious,
braised lamb shank with parsnip puree,
roasted fennel, and tomato confit was
also a winner. The preparation of the
item was well thought through, with the
roasted fennel complementing the flavor
of the lamb, not overpowering it.
The finale of the evening was a
wonderfully prepared dessert "tour"
which enabled us to sample several
specialty desserts. All were wonderful.
However, my personal favorite was the
chocolate fondant, whereas my wife
raved over the crème brulee.
Chef du cuisine Laurent Loupiac,
and Sous Chef David Desloges have
much to be proud of. “Kudos’ to
managing partner Roy B. Assad, (who
also owns the successful Leila's, on the
corner of Datura and Dixie) upon
another successful restaurant. His
carefully thought through brasserie
would make any "Parisian" feel like their
dining back home.
This Choron sauce is a béarnaise with tomato puree added. To complete the dish, serve
the filet over a potato gratinee with steamed broccoli on the side.
The Meat
Whole beef Tenderloin (any beef or steak with minimal fat content may be
substituted)
Kosher salt
Cracked Black pepper
Preheat grill to medium high. Remove all fat and membrane from the filet. Tuck “tail”
under filet, and tie with string to give it a nicer shape. Season filet with salt and pepper,
and place on very hot grill to allow a sear to begin. Be careful not to burn the meat. Sear
on all sides, then reduce the heat to medium, and allow filet to cook for 15-20 minutes on
indirect heat. Turn filet occasionally to cook filet evenly. A meat thermometer should
register approximately 130 to 135 degrees for medium rare. Place on carving board,
and allow to “repose” for ten minutes before slicing.
The Sauce
4 TB White Vinegar 1/3 cup Tomato puree
4 TB Fresh Tarragon Kosher Salt
1/4 cup Chopped Shallots Fresh Ground pepper
1/4 cup Water 2 TB Fresh Chopped Parsley
4 Egg Yolks 2 TB Fresh Chopped Tarragon
8 ounce Softened Butter
Place the vinegar, tarragon, and shallots in a small saucepan. Boil down the vinegar to
almost nothing. Remove the pan from the heat and let cool slightly. Add the water and
egg yolks, whisking constantly. Over low heat, whisk in the butter a little at a time until
thick and creamy. Stir in the tomato puree. Season to Taste with salt and pepper. Keep
warm in a water bath. Stir in parsley and tarragon just before serving.
Carve beef into thin slices and place over potato. Pour some sauce over the slices. Pass
some additional sauce on the side.
Nuccio’s Pizza Parlor
When I was a kid growing up,
Friday night was Pizza Night. It was a
family “routine” for my parents, two
brothers, and I to go to our favorite
Pizza Parlor, and get the traditional,
round, thin crust version, or the infamous
“Sicilian”, square, thick crust, pizza. I
was reminded of “pizza night” when we
arrived at Nuccio’s Pizza Parlor last
Friday night.
Having been established for less
then one year, this well kept secret on
the southeast corner of Lyons Road, and
Lantana Road, just can’t be kept a secret
any longer.
Pizza is king here, of course.
Although it was a difficult decision
between the pizza or the calzones
available.
Pizza is available in 14” or 16”
sizes, and the Sicilian comes in a
massive 17”x17”. You can create your
own combinations, and all of them will
feature a crispy crust that I look for in a
good pizza. The two pies my party
ordered were perfectly cooked with a
golden, crispy, crust. The sauce was
flavorful, and the
toppings were
generous.
Turn the menu
over and you'll
find other “pizza parlor” selections such
as stromboli, calzones, pasta, and hot
and cold submarine sandwiches on nice
Italian bread.
Everything I tasted here was good.
The ricotta, mozzarella, and romano
calzone, for instance, did not have that
“precooked” or “reheated” taste. It was
evident that the calzone was created
moments before. In addition to pizza,
Nuccio’s features flavorful pasta
selections as well. The tomato sauce
here is very good, which says a lot
about a pizzeria.
Save room for dessert. Delicious
desserts such as tiramisu and cannoli are
family recipes. There's also free delivery
for folks who live nearby. ($10.00
minimum.)
I finally found it! Nothing
pretentious. Nothing fancy. My Friday
night Pizza haunt.
with high quality merchandise, excellent craftsmanship, and fine
art of all mediums. In this extraordinary store,, consumers are
given the opportunity to own unique accessories hand made by
skilled Florida artists. The pottery, baskets, wall hangings, and
other items are all pieces of art. So are the personal items, such
as baby clothing, purses and jewelry. "The artists represented
here pour their feelings into their work," says Lentz, adding that
her store exudes a positive energy. That energy and personality
are evident in the tropicals on silk that artist Diane Lublinksi
paints, as well as in the framed Florida photography of Jeff
Bankston. This energy can also be found in the baby-wear
delicately embellished with embroidery by a local grandmother,
and in the custom beaded, shell and bamboo jewelry that Lentz
creates.
Art-Sea Living promises the unusual, whether it's pretty,
whimsical, tropical-theme, light switch covers, towel racks, and
Warm and cool tropical colors welcome visitors to Art-Sea
Living. This unique store, located in the Ocean Plaza shopping
center in downtown Boynton Beach, offers a potpourri of giftware
and decorative accessories for the discriminating homeowner.
Owner Babs Lentz has stocked Art-Sea Living with paintings,
by Florida artists. The store is not only a showcase for these
artists; it's a treasure trove of accessories and furnishings that will
add personality, style, and pizzazz to any home. There is
something for everyone, here. " One mistake that many people
make is that they think everything in their home has to match,"
says Lentz. "An eclectic use of accessories fits in and works well
around any style or trend. Many of these accessories add colors
that enhance the look of a home." For example, a tropical
painting can beautifully blend with antiques, and an Art Deco
cabinet can live harmoniously with Country, Provincial,
Traditional, and other decorating themes. "Go with your heart,"
says Lentz. "If you like something and it's pleasing to your eye,
you'll be happy having it in your home."
Frank Barchiese, President of
OOColor is a resident of Islamorada
in the Florida Keys.
Frank’s company provides some of the
biggest corporations in the country with
large format, color and black and white
printing for billboards, trade shows,
packaging, and special events. Initially,
Frank worked with artists to develop
reproductions of their original art. His
method provided the artists with the
ability to duplicate their artwork, sell
prints at a reasonable price, and retain
the originals.
One of the benefits to the artist was that
their original artwork could be
reproduced on materials that closely
matched the canvas or paper on
which the originals were created.
This first step into the consumer
market was a big success. It was
difficult to tell the difference between
the copy and the original.
Frank was determined to share
the experience of producing these
exciting images gained from his
commercial enterprise with friends
and neighbors, for their personal
enjoyment. His goal was to provide
customized reproductions
of art and photography at
affordable prices. Currently,
Frank is working with
individuals to copy
and enlarge their treasured
photographs and works of art to
be displayed in their homes.
Snapshots of family and friends,
old or new, can be blown up and
become wall murals. Artwork can be
copied and reproduced at almost any
size, on materials of your choice with
inks that are of long lasting quality.
Back to
School
By Dr. Lee
Edelstein
As the lazy days
of summer wind
down it’s time to
shop for school supplies, buy another
pair of new sneakers, and get back into
the routine of school. With a new
school year comes new teachers, new
friends, and new threats to our children’s
health and safety. So, to keep them safe
and healthy this upcoming school year,
here are a few tips to make this year the
best ever.
Kids get sick. Colds, coughs, tummy
bugs, and flu’s are going to happen
especially in the close quarters of a
classroom In general the younger the
child, the more frequently illnesses
occur. Now, while we can’t prevent our
kids from ever getting sick we can
decrease the frequency of these common
bugs with a few simple techniques. The
single most important thing we can do to
prevent the spread of germs is to wash
our hands. Encourage your child to
wash his hands at home and at school,
before and after meals, after using the
restroom, and after playing outside.
Antibacterial hand sanitizers are also
good to keep in your purse, the car, and
your child’s book bag. Encourage your
children not to share cups or straws with
their friends, and do not send them to
school with a fever, a red eye, an
uncontrollable cough, or a runny nose
with colored discharge (these are usually
due to viral infections which should self
resolve, but may be due to a bacterial
infection). Check with your child’s school
for their specific guidelines, or call your
child’s pediatrician for more details.
With the start of school, a little bit
of freedom and independence will be
bestowed upon your child. He may be
allowed to ride his bike to school, or
wait at the bus stop without adult
supervision. Now is a good time to
establish safety rules to help prevent
injuries. If your child rides his bike,
rollerblades, or skateboards he must
wear a helmet…period! Approximately
85% of brain injuries can be prevented

with the use of a helmet so if he doesn’t
want to wear one he shouldn’t get to
ride his bike. When walking to school,
make sure your child understands how to
cross the street correctly and to use cross
walks with crossing guards whenever
possible. Arrange for him to walk with
a buddy. For those early morning pickups
consider adding a reflector to his
book bag so people can see him when
it is still dark. Now is also a good
time to talk your child about stranger
danger Remind him never to go
anywhere with someone he doesn’t
know, even if the person looks nice.
Discuss who is allowed to pick him up
from school if you are unable to,. In
addition, develop a family “code word”
which your child will need to hear
before he can leave with anyone who is
not an immediate relative.
The start of a new school year is a
good time to reexamine your child’s
sleep habits. Poor sleep habits can
make it difficult for a child to reach his
maximum potential and contribute to
behavioral and emotional problems.
The average school age child needs
9–12 hours of sleep per night, and a set
routine should be followed; for example:
homework, playtime, bath, quiet time,
and sleep time. Your child should not go
to sleep with the TV or music playing.
Nature sounds can be soothing for those
kids who have difficulty falling asleep.
Contact your child’s pediatrician for
more difficult sleep problems.
Back to school is an exciting time
of the year. By discussing good
hygiene, safety, and sleep habits, you
can start your children off on the right
foot. Remember, if you ever have
questions about illnesses, injuries or
development your pediatrician is just a
phone call away.
Finding the Right
Plastic Surgeon
For You
By
Arthur G. Handal,
M.D., F.A.C.S.
Have you ever considered plastic
surgery? Of a certainty, finding and
choosing the right physician is a very
individualized process, whether he or
she is an internist, cardiologist or plastic
surgeon. There are many factors to
consider when choosing the right
physician for you. First, do your
homework (this involves speaking to
friends who have undergone cosmetic
surgery), search the Internet, and consult
with plastic surgeons. In my experience,
through listening to what patients tell me,
it is wise to see no more than 3
surgeons, as this may become extremely
confusing. Next, insure that you have
an exceedingly first-class rapport with
not only your surgeon, but with each
and every member of the staff you are in
contact with. The nursing staff and
administrative staff are reflections of your
surgeon. From your first contact on the
telephone, you should be treated with
dignity, respect, efficiency,
professionalism and courtesy. This will
give you an indication of what your
overall experience will be like, and you
should insure that your experience in the
office is positive, from the surgeon to the
receptionist. Ask yourself, is the office
clean? Are you seen for your
appointment in a timely fashion? Are all
of your questions answered?
We suggest to patients, from start to
finish, that they write questions down as
they think of them, and bring the list to
the office, whether it’s for their initial
consultation, preop appointments with
the nurse and the surgeon, the morning
of surgery and all postop appointments.
We stress to patients that the more
informed they are, and that they have a
good understanding of the process they
will undergo, the easier their
postoperative period will be. Another
important question to ask would be: Is
your surgeon board certified, and is the
operating room licensed and accredited?
Licensed operating
rooms must adhere to
certain criteria set forth by
the State of Florida and
other accrediting bodies.
Thus, it is important that
you ascertain this very
important fact in choosing
your surgeon.
It is of the utmost
importance that you trust
your surgeon. Ask to see
photos, and to speak with
other patients who have
undergone similar
surgeries. Request a tour of
the facility and, above all,
if you do not understand
what you are being told,
ask as many questions as
you need to feel
comfortable. Remember
that there are no such
things as “stupid questions”.
Cosmetic surgery should be
considered a positive, and patients
should approach it as such,
remembering however, that it is surgery,
and above all else, safety should be the
prime consideration.
You are about to embark on a very
intimate relationship with approximately
5 to 7 people; your surgeon, his or her
nurses, the anesthesia department, and
16 September 2005

3 or 4 administrative personnel, all of
whom will play an integral role in the
process. Remember also, that although
price is a consideration, you should not
choose your surgeon by price alone.
Prices vary widely throughout South
Florida and some things to consider are
exactly which procedures are being
performed, and by which methods.
Although patients may believe that they
are undergoing the exact procedure their
friend just underwent, it is important to
remember that this also is very
individualized, and one person may
require more or less of a similar
procedure, depending on the body
habitus and the amount of surgery to be
performed, thereby affecting price. Trust,
dignity, professionalism, courtesy, civility,
confidence and reliability are all words
you should be able to ascribe to your
surgeon and his or her staff, if you are
undergoing breast augmentation,
rhinoplasty, face lift or liposculpture to
name a few.
There are many, and varied
reasons, why people consider and
undergo cosmetic surgery; greater selfconfidence
in the work place and in
their social lives, especially in today’s
fast-paced environment. Some people
may be suddenly faced with life altering
changes created by either a death
or divorce, and this causes them to
look more closely at their physical
appearance and determine that they
would like to appear more rested,
fresher and less tired looking. In
addition people may finally be in a
position in their life when they can
finally afford to improve upon an
imperfection that has been bothering
them for years.
When all is said and done, plastic
surgery can improve your life in a
positive way. You should follow the
guidelines listed above to help you make
an informed choice. With a little work
on your part you can ensure your
experience with plastic surgery will be a
positive one.
Jupiter’s Hidden Gem
Did you know in
the amount of time it
would take you to
drive to Hollywood,
Florida you could be
in Hollywood,
California? Ok, maybe not the actual
California city, but in a mere 45 minutes
you could find yourself surrounded by a
genuine slice of Tinsletown.
For the past three years, tucked
away in a non-descript building in
Jupiter is one of South Florida’s best
kept secrets. Once inside, you will
find a collection of movie, television
and personal memorabilia of one of
the world’s most famous entertainment
stars. Here, you will find The Burt
Reynolds Museum.
The collection
that Mr.Reynolds
has given to the
museum is truly
amazing. You
can follow Mr.
Reynolds’ life as
a youth growing
up in Jupiter,
through his days
Burt’s 1990-1991
Emmy for Evening
Shade
By Marc Zatorsky
at Florida State
University, as
well as a special
area dedicated
to his father, the former Chief of Police
of Riviera Beach. Sports fans will love
Mr. Reynolds’ own collection of sports
memorabilia that is comprised mostly of
gifts from his friends and associates.
The main part of the museum is also
the most popular. From movie posters
and celebrity pictures, to TV and movie
props, to Burt’s numerous awards, the
museum is an awesome display of one
of Hollywood’s greatest stars.
The museum is run under the
direction of Executive Director, Mike
Daniel and his assistant Greg
Goldsbury. Mike, a treasure hunter by
trade, is the explorer who discovered
Blackbeard’s ship in 1996. Their
dedication to the museum is felt in the
warmth and admiration that they
have for Mr. Reynolds.
Mr. Daniel’s association
with Mr. Reynolds came about in
1989 when he was approached
at his marine hardware store,
The Sea Chest, by the art
director for the B.L.Stryker movie
that was shooting in town. Mike
was asked to be the custodian of
the show’s houseboat that year
and later became the show’s
marine coordinator. Mike
continued to work with numerous
local projects for Mr. Reynolds.
While in production for The
Maddening, Mr. Reynolds asked Mike
and another member of the crew to help
convert a horse barn on his ranch into
the museum which was moved to its
present location 3 years ago. “What
safer place could be found to display
such memorabilia than a former bank?”
Mike asks with a smile as he recalls
finding the present location.
“Mr. Reynolds’ designed the entire
museum himself,” Mike adds, “Burt did it
all” Most celebrities never go back
home, but Burt has
always tried to give so
much back to this
community.” The
museum is also
committed to
encouraging and
developing different
types of community
programs to develop
the local arts.
I asked Greg
Goldsbury what was
to be the part of the
museum that the public
seemed to gravitate
towards? He quickly
answered, “The
Smokey and the Bandit
display.” And the most
asked question by the
public? “That’s easy,”
answered Greg. “It’s:
Is Burt here?”
Well lately he
hasn’t been there very
Mike Daniel, Exutive Director (left) and
assistant Greg Goldsbury
often due to the fact that Mr. Reynolds
has once again found himself one of
Hollywood’s hottest commodities.
However, you never know who you just
might run into at the museum. Actor
John Goodman, better known for his role
as Roseanne Barr’s husband in the TV
series Roseanne, stopped in a few
months ago to check things out. √
I highly recommend a visit the Burt
Reynolds’ Museum. It’s definitely worth
the trip. ❂
Real EstateWise
Beware Of The
Bait And
Switch!
By
Jackie Ellis
When it comes to
selling your home
here in South Florida many sellers are
being lured into listing their homes with
limited service real estate providers
offering to charge only 2% or 2.5%
commissions. Beware of the bait and
switch! When hiring certain limited
service providers to list your home, the
price may look enticing at face value but
at what cost? Will you actually be saving
money when doing business with these
types of firms?
When contacted for their services,
they will make an appointment to view
your house. You’ll soon learn that the 2%
commission does not get your home listed
on the multiple listing service (MLS), a
computer database where realtors can
review properties, nor pay for the agents
of potential buyers. This will result in very
limited exposure for your property. One
of these providers admits in their contract:
“This 2% plan can affect the extent to
which your property is exposed to
potential buyers.” Some firms will then
add an additional 2% to place your
house into MLS to expose it to other
realtors and pay the buyer’s agents. But
many realtors will avoid showing your
house for only 2% commission.
“A professional real estate agent will be
able to put thousands of dollars or more
into a seller’s pocket.”
Sign up with these agencies, and
you may be forced to use their title
company and home warranty plan,
neither is industry standard. These
services often respond to this by offering
their full service plans for “only” 7%
commission. But this is 1% - 2% higher
than what you’d pay for from most
professional realtors. Seller, beware! This
practice is commonly known as “bait and
switch”.
“Choosing the offer is one of the most
important things that a full service
provider can help sellers do.”
It’s a very hot market in South
Florida. Here are some tips to keep you
from getting burned by the limited service
providers.
1. Read the listing contract that you are
about to sign.
If you are unhappy during the term of
the listing, make sure you are able to get
out of it. Many of these providers carry
very hefty penalty fees.
2. Check the company’s background.
Are they licensed? The person coming
over to list your house is typically a
For many people, your house
is your most important
investment. Don’t trust it to
just anyone.
What makes Jackie Ellis such
an original in South Florida real estate?
Quite simply, it’s the little things. It’s her
creative approach to marketing homes to
maximize their value. It’s her friendly,
energetic personality. It’s her lifetime of
local knowledge. And it’s her track
Are You Ready For Some Football???
By
Rob Chiavetta
Ahhhh, its early September. You wake
up with a goofy smile on your face. There is
an extra bounce in your step. The day
looks bright no matter what. Food tastes
better, the water fresher. You are in a great
mood even though your Mother-in-Law is coming over for
dinner…well, let’s not push it. All of this could only mean one
thing. September is finally here and the new football season is
about to begin!
No matter which team you root for, everyone is tied for first
place and there is fresh optimism in the air. Your team
strengthened itself in the off season by adding new players
through the draft and free-agency. Players from last year have
worked hard to perform better in the coming season. September
is the time of year when even the sourest of pessimists can find a
way to believe that their team is going to the Super Bowl.
While the greatest fans can convince themselves that their
team is going to finish #1, the football gurus in Las Vegas use a
far more sophisticated system to determine which teams actually
have a better chance of making it to the Super Bowl than others.
In an effort to provide some unbiased predictions, following this
article is a team by team breakdown of the Las Vegas odds each
team is ranked with to win the Super Bowl as well as the Las
Vegas projected number of wins for the regular season. The
prediction segments are my opinions for the coming season. I
have listed my opinion on whether the team will finish at, above,
or below the projected Vegas win total. I hope you find the
information informative as well as entertaining.
As a reminder to all football fans, no matter what Las Vegas
or this writer is predicting, it is early September, every team is
tied for first, and your favorite team can win the Super Bowl!
Capsules are broken down by division. Next to team name is Las Vegas Odds for that
team to win the Super Bowl listed then the Las Vegas projected season win total. My
predictions follow.
AFC EAST
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS 6-1 & 11
Prediction: Right at the 11 win total and division winner.
NEW YORK JETS 25-1 & 9.5
Prediction: Will just eclipse the 9.5 and win 10 games and be a Wild Card winner.
BUFFALO BILLS 40-1 & 8.5
Prediction: Too young on offense to compete and fall below with 5-6 wins.
MIAMI DOLPHINS 100-1 & 5.5
Prediction: Will surpass the projected total and win 8.
AFC NORTH
PITTSBURGH STEELERS 16-1 & 9.5
Prediction: Will come up just short on the 9.5 and win 9.
BALTIMORE RAVENS 17-1 & 9.5
Prediction: Narrowly go over the win total with 10 and take the division title.
CINCINNATI BENGALS 40-1 & 8
Prediction: Not yet ready for prime-time and right at the 8 win total.
CLEVELAND BROWNS 100-1 & 5
Prediction: Fall below the 5 and win 3-4 games.
AFC SOUTH
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS 8-1 & 11.5
Prediction: Will cover the 11.5 win total and win 13 games and the division title.
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS 40-1 & 8.5
Prediction: Tough call, but will go over the total and 9 wins.
HOUSTON TEXANS 65-1 & 7.5
Prediction: At least a .500 team and will go over the total and win 8-9.
TENNESSEE TITANS 100-1 & 6.5
Prediction: Tough division and will fall below the 6.5 win total with 5.
AFC WEST
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 25-1 & 9.5
Prediction: Improved defense allows them to win the division and win 10-11 games.
SAN DIEGO CHARGERS 28-1 & 8.5
Prediction: Will lose a few very close games to drop to 8 wins.
DENVER BRONCOS 30-1 & 8.5
Prediction: The Cowboys will make the playoffs as a Wild Card winning10 games.
WASHINGTON REDSKINS 40-1 & 7.5
NFC NORTH
MINNESOTA VIKINGS 18-1 & 9
Prediction: Division title and 10 wins.
GREEN BAY PACKERS 38-1 & 8.5
Prediction: Too many holes on defense make them no better than a .500 club and
will win 7-8 games.
DETROIT LIONS 40-1 & 8
Prediction: Will make strides to win 9-10 games and make playoffs as a Wild Card.
CHICAGO BEARS 50-1 & 7
Prediction: Below the 7 projection to win 5-6 games.
NFC SOUTH
ATLANTA FALCONS 16-1 & 9.5
Prediction: A contender, but will fall below the 9.5 with 9 wins and miss the playoffs.
CAROLINA PANTHERS 17-1 & 9
Prediction: Will regain their 2003 form and win the division with 10 wins and
make a run in the playoffs.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS 55-1 & 7.5
Prediction: The Saints still don’t get it right and fall to 6-7 wins.
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS 60-1 & 7
Prediction: Right at the 7 wins projection.
NFC WEST
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS 38-1 & 9
Prediction: Can’t seem to get over the hump and will fall to 8 wins.
ST. LOUIS RAMS 40-1 & 8.5
Prediction: Division winner and 9-10 wins look like a sure thing.
ARIZONA CARDINALS 50-1 & 7.5
Prediction: The Cardinals will be improved and right on the bubble with 7-8 wins.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS 200-1 & 4.5
Prediction: Look for the team to play hard under Nolan, but fall short on the
scoreboard. Building season with 4 wins.
The Parent-Teacher Partnership
By
Sally Goldberg,
Ph.D.
School bells rang
all across the state
of Florida during the
month of August
welcoming children
to schools for a fresh start to a new
school year. Schools are for all
children—some beginning with students
as young as 1 month of age, others
serving students as old as 21. All of
these schools and children have one
important characteristic in common—
parents! They have parents to partner
with as the single most important way to
ensure student success.
The more a parent guides and
supports a child at home, the better the
child will succeed in school. An
Parent
Involvement
AdviceWise
involved parent will provide teachable
moments during activities like folding the
clothes, setting the table, and going on
trips. He or she will teach values by
modeling them. Demonstrating kindness
and helpfulness to others teaches those
character traits. A parent who values
school will create an environment at
home and a relationship with the school
that will foster learning. Since we know
parent involvement has a powerful
impact on student learning, here are
some tried and tested ways to set your
child up for success and also maintain it
as the year progresses.
Start the Partnership at Home
Student
Achievement
Parent Involvement and Student
Achievement
Work Area
Your child should have a designated
work area of their very own. Look for
just the right place for your child to do
homework, read, and have computer
access. Make sure this area is
comfortable, inviting, and well stocked
with books and materials. You might
have a desk or favorite tabletop area
with all of the supplies your child needs
to successfully complete assignments and
projects. Comfortable seating such as
an easy chair or beanbag should also
be available. Giving children a special
place of their own will be a big step
in ensuring success for this school
year.
File and Display Area
Your child will generate a
tremendous amount of work during
this school year. You will want to
have a system in place to manage
the paperwork and show your child
that you greatly value his/her
accomplishments. A great solution
to keeping track of enormous amounts of
paper is to keep a filing cabinet or
accordion folder system. Depending on
your child’s age, you can file the papers
by month or subject. Such a storage
system will show great respect and
appreciation for your child’s work.
Then, set up an
educational
display. Use an
easy-to-find
fishnet to display
your child’s
work. These are
available in
most party
supply stores.
Have your child
select favorite papers for this honored
spot.
Build the Partnership at School
The Classroom
With your home all prepped and
ready-to-go, get as familiar as you can
with the school and classroom where
your child will be spending so many
hours away from home. If there is a
school visiting day, be sure to attend. If
not, make your own as soon as possible.
Get to know your child’s school,
classroom, and teacher as well as
possible.
The Teacher
Having a positive relationship with
your child’s teacher will be worth its
weight in gold. This is your partnership.
From your child’s point of view, it will
help greatly for him or her to know that
you have a direct connection with this
special person.
Maintain the Partnership between Home
and School
A Personal Communication System
Try to set up a regular meeting
schedule with the teacher. Plan a
schedule for a weekly or monthly
conference. If daily interaction is
possible, include that as well. Build your
connection and work at it just as you
would with any other important
relationship in your life.
A Written Communication System
Here is an
example of an
effective written
communication
system.
Select for
yourself 2
handy pads, a
plastic bag,
and a special
pen. With
these simple materials, you will be set.
Start the note writing system on your
end. Use these friendly notes to share
any helpful or interesting information
about your child with his or her teacher.
Write your note, fold it up, and place it
in the plastic bag with a blank piece of
paper for the teacher’s response.
Your child will be the special
messenger who carries the
messages back and forth between
the two important partners. This will
ensure an open line of
communication between you and
your child’s teacher.
Having your home set up for
school, will show great respect and
appreciation for your child’s efforts.
Familiarizing yourself with the school,
classroom, and teacher, demonstrates
strong support for what is being asked of
your child. When you keep a
communication system going, you are
actively creating and building a
partnership. A strong connection
between home and school is one of the
major building blocks for guiding your
child through a year of school success.
Necessary
Dooms Day
Documents
By: Larry E. Bray,
Esquire
Law Offices of
Larry E. Bray, P.A.
In the wake of various well known
cases involving people who are unable
to make their own choices, such as Terry
Schiavo, it is very important that you
give serious thought to basic family
estate planning tools such as the living
will and the health care surrogate
designation. You should also, think about
a testamentary will or revocable living
trust and a durable power of attorney.
Many people feel that the
catastrophes these “dooms-day
documents” are meant to address are
just so remote and so difficult to think
about. With our busy schedules, it’s hard
to take the time to go to a lawyer’s
office, tell your life story, think about
your mortality and get it done. People
are under the misconception that it’s too
expensive and these things cannot
happen to them.
But the facts are: (1) things can
happen at any time, (2) it doesn’t take a
lot of time, (3) it’s not expensive and (4)
you don’t even have to leave your house
except to have two witnesses present
when you sign (plus a notary if it’s a
will). In fact, if you don’t care that you
don’t actually meet the attorney who
prepares your documents, the whole ball
of wax can be done without ever going
to a lawyer’s office. The information can
be taken over the phone, payment can
be mailed, documents can be mailed to
you for review, and then they can be
executed anywhere there are the proper
witnesses and a notary if needed. Some
banks and brokerage houses will do this
for you. Or, if you can’t find a spot, the
lawyer who prepared the documents will
be happy to supervise their execution in
his/her office. Execution can be
accomplished in under twenty minutes.
As to the living will, you all know
that the Terry Schiavo matter was heartrending
no matter what side of politics
you were on. The execution of a living
will and a healthcare surrogate
designation keeps you in control of your
own destiny even if you are incapable of
expressing your wishes any longer. It
allows you to choose, while you still can,
how you are to be dealt with in the
event that the only thing keeping you
alive is a machine. Your designated
healthcare surrogate is selected by you
to make decisions on your behalf if you
can’t. That person should be someone
very close to you and who can be
trusted to carry out your wishes in
accordance with your instructions
thoughtfully set forth in advance in your
living will. Thus, the title “advance
directives.” If the document is properly
prepared, there is a formal procedure
set forth therein for the proper
determination of your condition. Even
then, your trusted health care surrogate
can still refuse if he/she thinks that it’s
just not the right time. So, those TV
dramas where the surgeons stand over a
still warm body waiting to harvest
organs, are just that, TV. There are
procedures in place to prevent that from
happening.
Both the living will and healthcare
surrogate designation, if properly
drafted, also address privacy issues that
have now come into all of our lives via
“HIPAA” (the Health and Income
Portability and Accountability Act of
1996). Because of this legislation, even
immediate family members can be
prevented from seeing a loved one’s
medical records, which may be needed
for decision making purposes, unless
your doctor and the hospital have your
living will on file with the proper HIPAA
authorizations contained therein. This
has been a nightmare for at least two of
my clients who came to me for help to
remedy this very situation.
Surely, this article is not meant to
preach nor should it be construed as
advice as to what your living will should
say about unthinkable things. The intent
here is simply to sensitize anyone
eading this to think
about this stuff. And
maybe, in doing so,
someone will realize
that it really is
important to express
their thoughts on the
subject, in some
legally recognized
manner, in
advance of anyone
ever having to think
about it.
Think about how
GOOD you’ll feel if
you just make the
little effort and take
the little time it takes
to do the right thing.
Like Walter Brimley
says, “It’s the right
thing to do.”
3. Hire someone who will protect your
best interests.
Sellers often sacrifice service and
representation when using these
agencies. A reputable realtor will be
willing to fight for your best interests and
offer guidance through a complicated
process. Choosing the offer is one of the
most important things that a full service
provider can help sellers do. A
professional real estate agent will be
able to put thousands of dollars or more
into a seller’s pocket because of the
research they provide.
Limited service firms have been
around for as long as I’ve been selling
real estate. Track record and experience
are very important in receiving top
dollar. As a seller you want to receive
the highest price, with the best terms, in
the shortest amount of time. Are these
limited service real estate agencies able
to do that at their reduced fee? The
answer is clearly “NO”! ❂
