WHY MOCS?
UTC’s logo history
Faced with politically sensitive issues
and in need of a stronger core identity
to help establish UTC as a growing
intercollegiate athletics program, UTC
asked SME Design, Inc. to create a
comprehensive identity program. Through
much exploration and working with
a 17-member committee (students,
alumni, donors, faculty, staff), SME
Design determined the new direction of
the athletics identity, moving away from
the politically incorrect Native American
Indian imagery.
Several identities
have been used
in the past. With
the old nickname
“Moccasins,” a snake
was used in the
1920’s and an Indian
was used until the year of major change
in 1996. A moccasin shoe was even used
in the 1980’s.
Adopting the State Bird of Tennessee,
the Mockingbird, as the core of the new
identity, while incorporating the strong
regional imagery of Chattanooga’s vast
railroad history and the “Chattanooga
Choo-Choo,” SME Design created a strong
and very unique athletics identity for
UTC.
The committee also recognized the
need for the word “Chattanooga” to
have a great emphasis in the logo.
Thus, “The University of Tennessee at”
is much smaller than the prominent
place of “Chattanooga.” The nickname
“Moccasins” was shortened to simply
“Mocs.” Thus established, UTC could
rebuild its athletics programs and
initiatives around this
new identity.
And rebuild it did.
Quickly establishing
the identity program
in February 1997,
combined with
tremendous success
in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament,
UTC had positioned itself to reach for the
next level.
From 1997 to 2007, the primary logo
was our mascot, Scrappy, riding a train.
The secondary logo features the front of
a train with the word Mocs built into the
logo. This logo is affectionately called the
“Cowcatcher logo,” referring to the front
lower grill of the train that helped push
objects from the train tracks.
The identity program also utilizes
several word marks and peelable logos,
including the word “Chattanooga,”
Scrappy’s head, and “UTC” and “Mocs”
in distinctive styles.
In August 2007, officials at Chattanooga
updated the school’s marks. A new gold C
logo was created as the primary mark and
is emblazoned on the side of the football
team’s helmets. The secondary marks
were updated with a more modern look,
and a new font, unique to the school, is
now used on the text areas of the logos
and marks.
The logos weren’t changed, just
updated. Chattanooga is still the Mocs.
Celebrating
25 Years
The McKenzie Arena, originally named the UTC Arena, was offi cially dedicated
in December, 1982. It’s construction is the result of a cooperative venture
between the City of Chattanooga, Hamilton County, The University of Tennessee
and the State of Tennessee.
The 210,000-square-foot, $15.5 million multipurpose complex is home to the
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s basketball teams. It also houses UTC’s
wrestling practice area, the weight room, training room, athletic administrative
offi ces, coaches offi ces and locker rooms for football, wrestling and men’s and
women’s basketball.
The Arena was renamed The McKenzie Arena on Feb. 21, 2000, after a
generous donation from supporters Toby and Brenda McKenzie of Cleveland,
Tenn. The Arena’s longtime nickname “The Roundhouse” came about because
of the facility’s round shape, but also because of the railroad tradition in the city.
The building that housed the mechanism to turn locomotives around when it
reached the terminal was known as the roundhouse.
The University of Tennessee’s men’s basketball team came down from Knoxville to open the Arena on Dec. 1, 1982. A sellout crowd
of 11,218 saw the Vols defeat the Mocs 56-49. The game turned out to be a showdown of two future NBA players. Tennessee’s Dale Ellis
paced the Vols with 17 points, while UTC’s Gerald Wilkins led all scorers with 20 points.
Defending National Champion North Carolina also visited the UTC Arena during the 1982-83 season. The Tar Heels, who boasted
such players as Brad Daugherty, Sam Perkins and a sophomore named Michael Jordan, managed a seven-point victory, 73-66. UTC’s
Willie White, who would also go on to play professionally, netted 26 points. Jordan fi nished with 27 points.
The 11,218-seat arena has had other future NBA stars on its court. Mississippi State’s Jeff Malone, Auburn’s Chuck Person, Tennessee
State’s Anthony Mason, Clemson’s Horace Grant and Georgia Tech’s Mark Price and John Salley, not to mention the Mocs’ own Johnny
Taylor and Russ Schoene, all displayed their talents at the Arena. The NBA’s Atlanta Hawks have held their mini camp in the Arena for
two summers.
The Mocs have compiled an overall record of 301-74 in home games at the Arena, a winning percentage of .805.
The arena has also supplied some major
entertainment acts for the City of Chattanooga.
In addition to ice shows, rodeos
and circuses, the arena has also provided
a stage for such performers as Elton John,
Barry Manilow, Billy Joel and Alabama.
Kenny Rogers was the building’s first event,
performing for a crowd of 12,000 on Oct. 8,
1982.
The arena’s most recent events have
been concerts by Brad Paisley, Aerosmith,
Elton John, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and
Shania Twain and World Championship
Wrestling and World Wrestling Entertainment
matches. Cher produced the last
musical sellout in September, 2004.
