3. President’s Day is ano<strong>the</strong>r 3-day weekend pass that your cadet may have available. Some<br />
cadets will go to <strong>the</strong> city or to friends’ homes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area. Encourage your cadet to “get<br />
away.” It helps break up Gloom Period.<br />
MARCH<br />
Spr<strong>in</strong>g is start<strong>in</strong>g to appear at <strong>West</strong> Po<strong>in</strong>t and Gloom Period is officially over this month.<br />
1. Rem<strong>in</strong>d your cadet to send any tax <strong>in</strong>formation needed for <strong>the</strong> April deadl<strong>in</strong>e. W-2’s for<br />
cadets are sometimes difficult to get, but <strong>the</strong>y should have received <strong>in</strong>structions on how to<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong>m onl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
2. Plebes are granted spr<strong>in</strong>g break. Many will make plans to travel on trips with fellow<br />
cadets.<br />
APRIL<br />
1. The APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) is be<strong>in</strong>g adm<strong>in</strong>istered throughout <strong>the</strong> monthperhaps<br />
earlier or later for athletes. Pass<strong>in</strong>g this APFT annually is a requirement. It<br />
consists of do<strong>in</strong>g sit-ups, push-ups, and a two-mile run with<strong>in</strong> a given time limit. This is<br />
very hard and very important.<br />
2. Check with your cadet before mak<strong>in</strong>g flight arrangements for summer leave. Cadets must<br />
rema<strong>in</strong> at <strong>West</strong> Po<strong>in</strong>t until after graduation exercises have concluded. Permission to leave<br />
early is not granted – even for <strong>the</strong> purpose of attend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> high school graduation of a<br />
sibl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
3. Take heart that life is less stressful and a little easier for your cadet. Remember, <strong>West</strong><br />
Po<strong>in</strong>t will never be easy and academics will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to be tough and stressful, but life is a<br />
go<strong>in</strong>g a little smoo<strong>the</strong>r for your son/daughter now.<br />
MAY<br />
1. Talk with prospective cadets and <strong>the</strong>ir parents to assist <strong>the</strong>m with mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir transitions<br />
easier.<br />
2. Brea<strong>the</strong> a deep sigh of relief – your cadet has survived Plebe year! The first year has<br />
been an <strong>in</strong>credible roller coaster ride for both cadets and parents, especially <strong>the</strong> moms.<br />
Always keep <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d that <strong>West</strong> Po<strong>in</strong>t wouldn’t have <strong>in</strong>vited your son or daughter unless<br />
<strong>the</strong>y thought <strong>the</strong>y could make it, survive and thrive.<br />
3. Graduation week culm<strong>in</strong>ates and ends with graduation on May 28, 2007. Cadets must<br />
rema<strong>in</strong> at <strong>West</strong> Po<strong>in</strong>t until after <strong>the</strong> graduation exercises have been concluded. Cadets of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Class of 2011 will probably be released between noon and 2:00 PM on May 28, 2007.<br />
The cadets’ gear is delivered to Buckner where <strong>the</strong>y are released after <strong>the</strong> graduation<br />
ceremony. Most drive a rental car or get picked up.<br />
