28 Equality and Diversity Equality and Diversity Pupils from 2011’s Law and the Environment Summer School Equal Opportunities Cardiff Law School is a diverse community with a shared commitment to promoting equality, dignity and respect. Disabled Applicants Our disability team works with administrative, academic and pastoral support staff, both within the Law School and across the University, to ensure that no students are disadvantaged in their programme of study by disability. We work with students to identify and remove barriers to their successful study, wherever reasonably possible. We encourage applicants who have specific requirements related to a disability, specific learning difficulty (such as dyslexia) or medical condition to discuss these with us at an early stage. We are happy to provide information about the admissions procedure, methods of teaching, course delivery, physical access to the School and to discuss with you how we might make adjustments to meet your needs. In addition, the University’s disability advisers can provide information about learning support, funding and about the University’s physical environment. Many will have prepared for a return to study by taking an Access course or A-levels; however, potential may be demonstrated in other ways, such as by relevant voluntary or paid employment. Applicants with a ‘non-standard’ background may be invited for interview and to sit an aptitude test as an alternative means of showing their academic potential. Widening Access Through its ‘Step Up’ scheme and other activities, the Law School plays an active role in encouraging applications from a diverse range of students across Wales. The Step Up scheme gives students in participating schools a ‘taster’ of life as a law student through visits to the Law School and a residential summer school. If you are offered a place you will be invited to one of the Law School's open days. There are three open days for LLB Law (M100) applicants, held in December, February and March. There are open days in February or March for the Law and Languages, the Law and Welsh and the Law and Criminology/Politics/Sociology degrees. These open days comprise both formal presentations and offer an opportunity to meet staff and existing students in an informal setting. Notes for Welsh Language Applicants We recognise that if you are a Welsh-speaker you may feel more comfortable speaking to a Welsh speaking personal tutor. If so, every effort will be made to allocate a Welsh speaker to you. If you wish, you can also submit your assessed work and take your examinations through the medium of Welsh, regardless of the language of tuition of the programme you are following. Some of the accommodation at Senghennydd Court student residence has been allocated for Welsh speakers and learners who would like to be grouped together. If you would like to take advantage of this please make a note of this on your accommodation form.
