SAMASTA
RONALDO RODINSKY
One-time science-fiction writer Ronaldo Rodinsky explores
deep space through oil painting. His celestial scenes
boom with sweeping colors and intricately textured details.
Most viewers imagine space as generally empty, with rare
concentrations of matter where interesting things happen. In
Rodinsky’s work, however, every section of the canvas is loaded
with matter and movement. The Dutch painter creates much of his
works in a trance-like state, channeling techniques from abstract
expressionism and other styles to depict magical and dynamic
universes.
Space, in Rodinksy’s work, is a playground of colors. Flaring
stars and colliding planets often resemble carefully thrown paint
drips. Other geometric shapes like ripples and cylinders suggest
a universe of massive minimalism. In these and other works, the
strictly separated reds, purples and blues confound the opposition
between background and foreground in the manner of a Mark
Rothko painting, still other paintings of drifting and overlapping
space dust would be taken for scenes of crashing ocean waves
were it not for their otherworldly colors. Bright, chemical yellows
collide with deep reds in a show of light so frenetic it defies the
stillness of oil painting. Faced with this sense of movement,
Rodinsky’s past as a science-fiction writer makes even more
sense. His paintings intimate the wonder of watching galaxies
collide, planets form, and black holes consume themselves.
Composizione 1
Oil on Canvas 51”x 31”
Samasta’s paintings are luminescent abstract works fusing a
sprightly use of color with complex compositional layering.
The pieces reveal a tempered creative method and a fascinating
approach to the painting process.
While his work is an evolutionary result of growing up
surrounded by the art and beauty of Italy, Samasta cannot claim
specific influences, and in fact rejects the idea that he is a product
of his past. “They [my paintings] are a product of the moment,
which is normally a peaceful experience to me. I do not paint
out of sadness or pain but out of passion for painting, and out of
love for colors in their composition.” Samasta’s creative process
is often long and arduous.
He paints in layers, with the canvas often becoming literally
heavy with color before the composition “breaks through”.
In his works, most visibly, in Composizione 1, reds fuse into
oranges which seem to have evolved from lime greens, to reveal
an expressive vivaciousness and energy. Each piece is a unique
experience of paint at work and light at play, always in radical
combinations filled with brilliant surprises like the unfolding
blossoms of spring.
Born in Rome, Italy, Samasta currently divides his time between
Tuscany and Costa Rica.
