Upper Canada in present day Ontario and Lower Canada is Quebec.
The F Problem
In the birthplace field occasionally is found AF Canada@. This seems to be an universal problem
throughout the 1851 census. According to Brenda Merriman AF@ generally indicates one of two
things:
$ French Canadian
$ Of British Parents
Canada F@ is often found beside the children of German (Mennonite)families in Waterloo
County. It is apparent that Canada F is used when one of the parents usually the father is born in
Canada.
