Letter to our members It was 1909 and a group of young men decided to form a Club to explore the new technology of wireless transmission. From the simple radio sets they built then to transmit Morse code to the digital radios of today, it has been quite a century for the Radio Club of America. In the 12 years since our last membership directory, it is almost mind boggling to look at what has happened in the wireless industry. In 2000, we were talking about the integration of PDA’s and cell phones. We have pocket-sized smart phones today with more computing power than in a 1990s-era desktop computer. All of this has been more evolutionary than revolutionary, in other words, it is still centered around a two-way radio. Today’s smart phone is a device with five two-way radios. There is an 800 MHz cellular radio, a 1700 or 1900 MHx PCS radio, a Wi-Fi radio, a Bluetooth radio and in the lastest, a 700 MHz LTE radio. We have come a long way in 12 years, but it is still a radio. Those Club founders in 1909 would be proud of where the wireless industry is today, as one of the world’s most dynamic industries, and they would also feel right at home with the radio technology. The Radio Club of America is committed to making sure there is sufficient talent to continue our industry’s innovation and growth. The Youth Activities program, headed by Carole Perry, and the long-standing scholarship program are two of the ways we help young people become interested in the wireless industry and assist them financially with their education. I encourage every member of the Radio Club to make 2013 the year to contribute time or money to the Radio Club. That way, in another 96 years, we’ll publish the membership directory of 2109.
